  • I want a box that reads all incoming tv channels and based on how obnoxious it sounds and how much crap is scrolling along the bottom of the screen it automatically rejects that channel from my menu. It would shit can all commercials, exercise videos, sports, and crappy infomercial type 'news' stuff like this. It could keep CNN on one channel. You could program voices you hate and it would automatically mute these people when they appear.

  • @Gayboy130 hmm, if that won't, then the prices of mainstream TV Satellite and Cable providers will

  • fuck that this one's for poor ppl or old ppl lol

  • @Gayboy130 it will if you download shows and dont watch cable :D

  • i dont need it

  • can u watch videos for free?

  • im guna get this for my 1tb hard drive thats 100 percent full with movies and tv....it wont stream over my laptop to my xbxo

  • Will not work with Netfilcks.. I know this for sure. Sending the one I have back. Its will take more than 3 mg to run without skipping.

  • Like gofightlose said, I can do all or most of this on my 360/PS3/PC/Internet apps on my new Vizio. Why spen $150 for, this is made for old people that don't have multible options.

  • @noobsyb0t ...you have a vizio tv! you might as well drive down the street throwing your money out of the car window. complete junk. at least old people can afford a nuvision, panasonic, sharp or samsung. vizio...waahahahaha. what a waste of money.

  • @PhillyUSA1 Every Vizio TV I've owned worked great, Spending double the amount of money for Sony just for it to be half that price in a year is a waste of money.

  • The element of design is completely unknown to this company.

  • DO NOT BUY, WHAT YOU SEE IN THIS VIDEO IS NOT WHAT YOU GET!! AND NO NETFLIX EITHER.. ADS ON THE SIDE!! ETC ETC ETC

  • POPBOXES ARRIVED TODAY AND EVERYONE IS CURSING UP A STORM!!! CRAPPY NAVIGATION, NO WAY TO SORT, NO FAN ART, JUMPY/STICKING 1080 PLAYBACK, NO WAY TO FAST FORWARD MORE THAN 4X OR ANYWAY TO SKIP AHEAD ON THE MOVIE PLAY (IF IT PAYS)

SCRAPER SUX AND GETS EVERYTHING WRONG.

OFF THE BAT IT BRICKS ITSELF TRYING TO UPGRADE ON FIRST STARTUP, THEY JUST 5 MIN AGO RELEASED A FIX FOR THAT.

NO DIGITAL AUDIO VIA HDMI CABLE..

    PROBLEMS GO ON AND ON!!

  • @FatPumPumLovah haha you sound so full of dark sheep shit !!

  • @randomvidz94

Buy one by all means!! see for yourself.

  • @FatPumPumLovah why don't you buy one ?

  • @randomvidz94 because, tested at store walked out empty handed, and forum shows all the problems with it to back up what i say..

  • @FatPumPumLovah

    Thanks for the warning mate.

  • It is now July 2nd 2010 and POPBOX is still, only, taking pre-orders!?

  • They should make an additional version with a SATA HDD bay.

  • wow this guy has an annoying voice

  • Looks like it uses boxee source code

  • just buy a cheap netbook, plug it into the tv with vga/dvi/hdmi, then go on windows media player.

  • fuck ps3 cuz it dont play mkv

  • JUST BUY A PS3!!! FUKIN IDIOTS

  • @emptyehole21 1.) PS3 cost about double the price. 2.) PS3 doesn't play .MKV files.

  • @imdante

    1)ps3 is $200AMERICAN (120GB)

    2) PS3 can play mp4s and blu rays(no need for .mkv) (HD 1080p)

3)ps3 has built in browser which means FREE tv

    4) PS3 has free wi fi connection and bluetooth

5)oh yeah if you forgot, it plays games too!

    6) AND, ps3 is capible of 3d technology.... . CONVINCED YET, OR SHUD I CONTINUE???

  • @emptyehole21

Correction: PS3 (120GB) in the USA retails for $300. Yes it does play Blu-ray and plays games.... but at a cost of an extra 150 bucks.

    Popbox comes with 802.11 N. PS3 has the outdated 802.11 G.

PopBox comes with a dedicated remote... PS3 Remote is sold separately (more money)

Popbox will play most audio and video codecs including DVD RIPS. PS3 Wont.

So im just sayin that the Popbox is great choice for what its trying to do.....play audio and video content on your TV

  • @imdante k i dont want this to go on forever, but first of all your wrong... dunno where u live but EVERYWHERE i go its $200....#2) the ps3 controller is a remote....Im just sayin pay $50 more and you can have such a better system that can play games, FREE TV/MOVIES, im just saying it wud make much more sense to spend the extra $50..Im done. thanks

  • can't wait until someone hacks it and the option for a better interface will be available. the interface it has... really... o.0

  • my wii does that

  • That interface was ugly and choppy. I hate it when hd interfaces arent clean and smooth.

    Try PS3's interface. It's beautiful!

  • Pop Box or Boxee? I've already tried the interface for boxee and like it but still needs some work but seeing as it's in beta very understandable.

So what does everybody else think should I get Pop Box or Boxee? Pluses and minuses?

  • Wow what a rip off. There is a similar product already in the market that i have been using for 4 months now. its called WD TV HD Media Player which is sold for 99 and 150 with wifi. you can go on youtube or ANY site on the internet to play videos or whatever from your TV. Even "free" videos from forums and blogs. Blip, netflix etc will cost money on this popbox and they expect us to pay money to receive their paid service?

  • You're wrong. Popbox does NOT charge you fees to connect with Netflix or Blockbuster. It only CONNECTS you with your accounts that you already pay for on Netflix or other account. Maybe you should READ the information on the Popbox web site, instead of making assumptions and allegations.

  • @migg2929 What a ripoff? WdTV cant even downmix dts not to mention there are no built in apps. and this box has a much better user interface. enough said.

  • @tennisbgc WDTV Live can downmix DTS.

I agree Popbox is a far, far better product though (not surprising since it comes from the same stable as Popcorn Hour)

  • I was thinking of getting this at tax return time, but then found out that it doesn't do You Tube or Hulu. Kinda kills it for me.

  • @audiotrax2000 YouTube won't let ANY media box offer it's services, because YouTube's ads become useless on them since the viewer can't click them. YouTube just made WD remove YouTube support from their WD Live boxes...

  • I doubt that people who buy this stuff also don't have a pc or mac... so I wonder why spending time into learning new os, because this is an os in the end. Yes it is simple... but at the beginning... so why learning more than 1 or 2 os ... and if it becomes obsolete? or don't like the interface? start again??? maybe they'll say this, yes when it's about to present a new product.

  • 0:24 that's what she said

  • POP Box does NOT have HDMI or even a DVI connection. For a product that's supposed to be modern, it sure looks shady to me.

  • That's funny because you can clearly see the HDMI port on it when he shows the back. That's the port that says HDMI 1.3 underneath it. As if him saying "it's got HDM" wasn't a big enough clue.

  • I must be fukin blind. You're right. I see HDMI now. I'll get my vision checked. tomorrow. lol

  • it does have hdmi

  • I also want to add that Most cable companies like comcast and cox give you a reduction in your internet fees if you sign up for other services like phone and cable tv. If you chose to drop Cable tv your internet fees will probably near double and you will also be monitored for bandwith. It sucks but it's fact.

  • You better check with your mom on that one. The savings of bundling your cable and internet aren't that great. plus for ADSL users they may not have to worry... they'll just bundle their phone and internet.

  • Ya, OK. I'll check with Mom

  • Cable isn't Obsolete yet. Sure you can watch Netflix but it's not going to bring you local news, it's not going to bring most TV shows that kids like and Netflix stream is hardly high def. Its running interlace quality at around 15fps to stream over the internet. Cable TV and Satellite still bring 30fps Progressive. Though i don't watch much tv myself, those that do will not be ready to switch over to internet media as a main source of entertainment

  • lots missing from this review, i'm wondering if it can network to your computer to access MP3s and videos. I don't want to reload a new box with all my media, but rather access it from one main computer, I ASSUME it can do just this

  • Either way, this is still pretty tight!

I so don't wanna pay for cable any more.

Internet pretty much makes cable obsolete anyways.

  • Sick!!! So you can hook your gaming consoles to this to?

Nice but can't you already access the internet with a gaming console?

  • I'm curious for the music player. If it has psychedelic vitalizations and stuff.

  • you mean visualizations?

  • Yea, I meant that, hehe.

  • i want one

  • why would i buy a box that comes with ads on the side. just get a apple tv with no ads.

  • Apple products are for feigs.

  • because apple tv cant play 1080p or even mkv's out of the box not to mention its cheaper too. apple tv what a letdown

  • This PopBox is just a *laptop* with HDMI video card and a media center+server software.

If you have a spare laptop lying around, just install Ubuntu linux on it with Elisa media center - and it's all FREE software.

What if you don't have a HDMI on your video card? Well, you video card is not going to beat your latest HDTV *video card* ... so you are better off to stream everything to your HDTV and let it's HD engine process things.

  • That is stupid bullshit you post there. The Popbox is a dedicated device. You need a pretty powerful laptop if you want to play full HD content properly; an old one isn't going to cut it.

Plus, the popbox comes with a handy remote, and all sorts of apps. Media center software is cool if you build a mediacenter PC. This is just a streamer. It costs a lot less and it's very easy to use. Installing Linux on the other hand, is a recipe for high blood pressure. Especially when dealing with WLAN.

  • If you have a spare laptop around install Boxee on it.

  • Well for starters the popbox will give you less headaches than any kind of htpc setup.

  • this is useless without fast internet

  • Wow this is sick.

  • live tv?

  • i wanna buy this lol, looks soo cool

  • wow I could just watch everything on my computer for free.......

  • @wrxxdemon or sumthing, Wrong answer to Macupayne, ... DONt? then why not to connect ur hdmi from pc to TV...

    calebtx..kind of good answer ; )

  • Why not just hook up your TV through a VGA cable?

  • @MacUPayne because sometimes your pc is in your pc room like mine. and your tv very far from the pc. I been waiting for a product like this for a while. looks very promising.

  • VGA is at best 480p at only ...

If you want HD 1080p content, you need to stream everything to your TV or connect via HDMI ... but your graphics card is not going to be as good as your latest HDTV ... so streaming to it is better.

  • @calculus79 you can also use component for 1080p, since HDMI is the same exact thing, just much smaller and usually includes sound.

  • VGA can also handle 1080P. Only difference is, is that it's analog. HDMI is digital.

  • what about displayport?

  • So what's the difference between the popbox and a roku?

  • pay another 70$ n get your self a boxee.

  • that chick used to be on digital trends

  • Does it have YouTube ?

  • The title is somewhat misleading. I thought we could finally get rid of high monthly fees from traditional cable with a new iptv product.

  • I noticed there is no YouTube. Too many laws...

  • Is this the same service for sony's bravis tvs? The sony premium service??

  • This may be good but im waiting for that balling sh*t the Boxee box or DivxTv

  • Boxee is cool, but you need a computer for that, which is way more expensive than this thing.

  • they have a boxee box...

boxee crew has probably spent 4 times longer to make boxee than this cheap thing. It has a horrible UI.

  • avatar roku!

  • lol.. the first thing that popped in to my head too.. :D

  • hahaha thats awesome

  • lol

  • Awesome.

  • pop pop pop

  • well, i can do all of that on my xbox, and ps3, and computer, and bluray player....hmmm?

  • Be it a set top box, gaming console, or media player, they are all starting to have the same functionality.

    -Damien

  • play 1080p mkvs at all let alone smoothly I dont think so. and for this price.

  • @tennisbgc Heck my old WD HDTV box plays 1080 mkv's smooth. So does my Patriot Box Office.

  • Depends on the reframe amount, not the resolution. (Though the higher the resolution, the more reframes it usually has.) I will admit, though, 1080p is more than viable at this price point nowadays, regardless of the amount of reframes.

  • its pretty cool device for someone that doesnt really have an xbox or a ps3

i personally just bought a samsung led tv 55 inch that has a usb port that lets me hook my hard drive. It also has a vga port so i can hook up a laptop to it.

My ps3 also connected to my tv can recieve all media streams from my home computers. I would buy it if i didnt have a ps3 for sure. I do like how it has netflix streaming though without the ps3s annoying disk you have to put in.

  • awesome

  • I'm waiting for you to give me the money...

  • inspired by boxee, it seems

  • I want one buuuuut

    can I watch Revision3?

  • hey says you can right in the video!

  • i want one!

  • When is Vimeo going to be on all these new devices?

  • 120$ God damit i got my iptv box for free and HD Channels <3

  • Love that Roku was the sponsor for the Popbox review...rofl.

  • @rjcraddock Gotta love the irony.

  • It's ok, it needs to have more content and a way to customize the channels that you would like to add.

  • "customize the channels that you would like to add" I think that a key factor.

    -Damien

  • nice, but i didn't see a youtube button. will they be implementing one?

  • that looks awesome!

  • this box going to work with HULU?

  • PopBox says don't hold your breath for Hulu. Hulu doesn't want to play nice.

    -Damien

  • No hulu No box lol hey people you and your team is doing a good job happy new year and god bless you

  • I don't think you will see Hulu in anything, its owned by the major networks and they are not going to play nice with something like this. Personally I like to see BBC on this, I wonder if it runs it.

  • IMHO "boxes" like this are way too restrictive. If you're even slightly tech savvy, your best bet is to just build your own HTPC for as little as ~$200, if you shop wisely.

With an HTPC you can have a Windows desktop right on your HDTV, and you're then unrestricted to do anything you can do with your desktop PC...including surfing the net, playing any game of your choice (GPU capable), checking email, etc...

p.s. you can play full HD content with a $50 Radeon HD3450, without a single hiccup.

  • I think siciliano29 just volunteered to build one for all of us :)

    -Damien

  • $200 HTPC? NO WAY buddy. You don't know anything about computer stuff. Let me sum it up for you: Case: $50 (a nice looking HTPC case is at least $100-150) Good PSU: $50 Motherboard+onboard GPU: $70 Dual core CPU: $60 2GB RAM: $40 1TB Hard disk: $80 Blu-Ray drive (optional) $80 Windows 7: $100 That's really cool but also a lot more expensive. You can't compare the two.
  • Sweet box!

  • Thank GOD! Now we can stick it to the major cable providers who charge an arm and a leg for content we hardly watch.

  • "content we hardly watch" Word!

    -Damien

  • Viva la Résistance!

  • do you know if it would work in Germany

  • can you watch like ESPN, MTV, etc.

  • Just means they'll increase the price of the internet connection to make up for the loss. :)
