I always do a cut in my truss for the wall frame to hold the pressure of any thrust into the wall or out. This cut fits over the wall top plate and covers usually about 1 inch down over due to using 6 inch by 1 1/2 . That leaves me with about 4 1/2 inch of wood and works out real well for safety and strength on small jobs.
