How often do you have to do this in the army?

It depends of your rank, regiment/Brigade and country.

Normally, all airbourne must jump once in 6 months but an operational troops do 15 jumps a year, more or less.

@BravoUnoquatro The High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) is a way to use the glide characteristics of a chute to reach a drop zone not directly under the flight path. You can jump borders, dodge SAM coverage, and misdirect search parties with the HAHO technique. Separation of a force is used at times, as well, but usually the idea is to make life difficult for the reaction force.

Cant imagine the fear the Germans felt when 14,000 Airborne and Glider infantry came falling to the ground at night, right before the beach landings of D-day!

Im pretty sure they saw the AA fire, and all the airplanes, that had to at least strike some fear in them. But im sure they couldnt see the sheer enormity of the invasion force, like you said.
