  • how often should u get new springs? ive got 4 years on mine and im getting new seals and stuff again for the like 3rd time but i never got new springs

  • @m0t0cr0ss17 - springs don't really wear out. if they are right for your weight, I wouldn't worry about them.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC ok thanks my friend tells me he gets new ones after ever like 120 hours or so just thoguht id ask if ur supposed to. now.. time to get new seals on again.. lol

  • This video made me go for it on mine. Always been scared. I have a question though. My forks are the same when i took them apart as the ones you are working on in the video, but i have been reading about changing the lower and upper fluid. The way you do it in this video, does that accomplish both? And is there a certain way you are supposed to "bleed" the system other than just pumping the air out like you demonstrate when you put the new fluid in? Thank you

  • @mxkx48 - If you have cartrige forks like in this video, you only have one chamber for oil; however, some are difficult to get all the oil out. if you can't pump the rod to get it out, take the large allen head nut out of the bottom (compresion stack). That makes it easy to drain.

  • How many miles were on the forks? Was the oil covered in metal dust?

  • @Bulgdoom - I don't know the miles or hours, but it had been a while. No noticable "metal dust", just dirty.

  • Yeah I figured it out. Luckily Yamaha sells that specific part.

  • What is the purpose of that plastic piece around the dampening rod? While I was changing my fork seals, it was broken.

  • @blazinhott112 - it is a spring guide. It keeps the fork spring straight when compressing. I suggest you get a new one.

  • just a quick question, i know on my 02 yz125 is a cartridge type fork, but what size driver do i need? a 42mm or what?

  • @TheTacokid09 - your 2002 will need a 46mm. Just go to our site and key in your model and it will pull the right one up!

  • @RockyMountainATVMC Thank you very much!!!!

  • hi i love you guys i buy everything i can from you. but are my cr125 2002's forks twin chamber? or cartridge? becuase they are kyb. but they dont look like my crf250rs 07 twin chambers

  • @staticxmako - the forks on your bike are Kayaba cartridge type. The 250 and 450 had showas that year - those ones are twin chanber (dual chamber). Kayaba forks didn't do a dual chamber type until 2005 on some bikes.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks buddy i just placed another $500 order and now have $300 in credit i love you guys so much you rule!!!!

  • @staticxmako - thanks a lot!

  • ive order stuff from yall all the time great parts and awesome service now would this be the same as a 03 yz450?

  • @dillonmitchum124 - glad to hear it - thanks! Yes this would be the same on your 2003.

  • Comment removed

  • would this be the same with a 2001 kx 85

  • @brockb89 - very similar - yes.

  • are cr 85 forks cartridge type?

  • @crfracing9 - yes

  • i have a 2000 cr125r will this be bascially the same?

  • @pumpkinman47 - your 2000 cr125 has twin chamber forks. Watch our "dual chamber' fork video.

  • is it the same process for 03 ktm sx 125? Why are you turning the adjusting screw in the same direction in part 2, when you are putting forks back together?

  • 2:14 Oooooh yeeeeaahhh....

  • i have a 02 yz250 so im assuming this would be how mine is done? also im 175-180 and ride some mx and mainly open sand/trails/some woods with a good ammount of whoops and some nice size jumps. would 5w or 7w oil be better for me.

    thanks

  • @5oSLOW - yes, this video will work for your 02 YZ. i would stick with 5 weight, maybe go up on the oil height 5 or 10 milimeters ( I think stock is 130mm, you could go to 120mm).

  • I have a quick question. On my 2002 Yz250f would it be the same process as this or are they the dual chamber type? I know its a dumb question but I don't know.

  • @520bulldog - same as this. Yamaha didn't go to dual chambers until 2005. The WR still doesn't have them.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC Ok thanks alot!!

  • Is there not a tool to remove the retaining clip from the tube ? A screwdriver is dangerous around the metal you dont need to have scratched.

  • Will it be the same way for the inverted forks for a 1997 rm 125

  • @MrRmz4life - Your 1997 should have conventional (not inverted) forks. They did this for a few years starting in 1996. They are actually dual chamber forks (refer to our dual chamber fork seal video). It is basically the same even though yours are not inverted (those were great forks though!).

  • thanks for the video :) the dealer wanted to charge me 250 and that is me bringing them the forks off the bike.

  • @dads420 - wow! that is high, but not surprising. They are easy to do. Start charging your buddies $100 and you will both be happy!

  • Hi! At 2:32 i saw the cylinder of aluminum color where there are the oil seals. But is it an piece integrated to the fork? Because on my yz they seem to move a little and above, between the fork and they, seems to be some oil. Why? Are the forks broken?

    Thank's

  • @loop1612 - i am not sure if that piece is threaded on or pressed on. In either case they aren't supposed to come off. If yours is leaking there you may want to take it apart and see what is going on.

  • my manual said 90mm for the oil but how do u measure that as a liquid

  • @FMXwwjd - watch the end of part 2 where we measure the void of oil in the fork. That is where your 90mm is coming from.

  • hi i have a question, i am changing my for seals on my ZX6 1998 ninja, how do i get the bottom bolt of it keeps twisting and i don't have the tool for holding the rod in place, and suggestions????

  • @glyn900 - You can usually get it without the cartridge rod holder (inner tool) by using an impact driver on the bottom bolt (air or electric). It should buzz right out.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks for that did the job perfect, i made a tool for getting it back on, but them bits are expensive, and i had to replace the stock head bearings in the steering, not sure how to get the bottom one on cause it has to be kinda compressed on i think, would you have any idea??

  • @glyn900 - the inner race on the stem is difficult and requires a press. However, My YZ manual shows doing it with a chissel (start with a small one and work up). i tried it because I want to do a video on it soon, and it actually worked. I can't say it will work on every machine though.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC sorry to bother you again, but see when am changing the seals is that all i have to change, what about the bottom rings there like little clips do i have to change them??

  • Respond to this video... and the amount of oil, and what kind/strength??sorry for bothering you??

  • @glyn900 - You 1998 ZX6 will take 10 weight fork oil, but I don't know the volume. refer to your owner's manual.

  • Thank you.

  • very good! I am Colombian but have dificult for speak inglish, i speak Spanish, please a traductor the idioms Spanish. Thank you

  • cheers mate

  • hi i have a question would be great if u could help. im riding a xr200r 1990 model. I have an issue with my fork as its too hard. when i hit the break and force it down, it goes down a little. what could cause this and how can i fix it. Thanks.

  • @rashvinpillay - It could be a few things - too much oil, bad bushings, or something broken. I would suggest rebuilding them with the correct oil and volume. Inspect the internal parts while you are there.

  • how hard do you have to hit the fork to get it to split? i probably hit it it 100times 3-4 times as hard sometimes and still nothing. i have an 01 suzuki rm 250.

  • @sangheraent - make sure you removed the clip sitting on top of the seal first off. Sometimes the seal can stick to the outer tube making it difficult. This will often ruin the bushings too because you have to hit them appart so hard. This is why i always grease the outside of the seal when installing them.

  • how often and how do you know when you need to do this?

  • @Monsterenergy8771 - refer to your manual. I change mine every year or when they start leaking.

  • I got a Cr80 02,I'm going to Change the forkseals,But how much oil should i have in them?

  • is it normal for my tires to crack between the side nobs tire is almost new

  • @davison1021 - it depends on the tire and how it was used.

  • I have a 2008 Honda CRF150R...can i just pop the seal out like that?

  • @RCcarpro147 - Like what? the video? Yes, same thing.

  • I have a 2008 Honda CRF150R...can i just pop the seal out like that?

  • how do you clean the fork internals? I bought a used bike and I am pretty sure the fork oil has never been changed in the past 7 years.

  • @ionredline2006 - I would just disassemble and clean with a towel. Don't use brake cleaners or anything that may damage seals or o-rings.

  • how do i rebuild inside the sturt!? what tool will i need to do that?

  • @wiger3 - what is a "Sturt"?

  • will tht work on wp ktm forks

  • @spazmanlala9 - It sure will.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC alrighty...thanks dude

  • Is this fork on a kx 85 like this?

  • @mAtThR3w - it is very similar, yes.

  • Does That work on my 2003 GasGas EC 250 with WP forks?

  • @pistho1 - should be very similar

  • does anyone know how much and what weight of ATF is in a Honda CRF 230 forks?

  • is it the same procedure for my kx450f 2010 forks?

  • @rama6maiden - nope, check out oour "dual chamber' fork seal video.

  • Is that fork you workin is the same with that of KX250f 02 forks? thank you..

  • Thanks to this vid I changed oil and seals to my KTM fork! Something different inside the KTM fork, from that seen in the vid but the main job is the same....

    Thanks !!!!

  • @ad017510 - Good job. yes the KTM forks are a little different, but the steps are pretty much the same.

  • THANKS, great video. I have an '02 426YZF. No surprises. My parts guy talked me out of the seal driver to save money. Got it done but to everyone else SPEND THE MONEY.

  • Hi class video, can you air lock a fork by just changing the seal and the outer oil.Leaven the inner chamber alone not opening it?

    Thanks.

  • @ckickenleg - "air lock"? I am not sure what you mean. You can change the seal and outerchamber oil without opening the inner chamber on dual chamber forks if you wanted. But that doesn't really relate to the cartridge fork video.

  • Is the push rod strong enough for a deep bend? Got one from ebay and its in my sister's right now. She will ship it here in the Phil and i instructed her to remove the spring and push rod to make it short and fit in a box. My worries is during the shipping if push rod will survive to any twist etc of the box during shipping. This is my first inverted forks and i have no idea at all. Thank you so much.

  • @WalasticRiders - with the fork compressed, the damping rod will be fine. i don't see how it could be damaged.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC Thank you so much. Appreciate it.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC is that fork you workin similar that of KX250f 02? thanks

  • @RockyMountainATVMC is that fork you workin similar that of KX250f 02? thanks.

  • @WalasticRiders - Very similar indeed!

  • @RockyMountainATVMC would this be the same for a cr85 expert

  • Would it be the same process for old school forks? 1987 YZ80 to be exact...

  • @khoi000 - similar

  • how to replace upside down fork seals

  • I was wondering if procedure will work on a 2002 cr 125

  • I have an 01 yz 125 where its leaking a little oil from the forks. Should I just change the fork seals?

  • @mattprzy - I guess that depends on whether or not you want them to quit leaking oil.

  • @RockyMountainATVMCI was wondering if this procedure will work on a 2002 cr 125

  • @dugnelson43 - It sure will!

  • hey where can i purchase the tusk seal driver or wat else can i do it with?

  • @blindace23 - check out our website. We wither have the Tusk driver or motion Pro driver for your bike.

  • I have RG3 suspension, springs, valves, everything... Its finally dialed in and Im worried about taking the forks into a shop. I want to watch them replace it

  • @itsCONTROVERSY - i doubt a shop would mess with your valving, but why spend the money. Fork seal replacement is simple. you can do it yourself.

  • yo

kinda worried just got a 2003 yz 125. noticed the fork seal on the right has been leaking. when i hold the front break the forks are kinda stiff to push downa nd pull back up. what could this be??

  • @W3B5TA - You need to rebuild them so you can look at the internals and make sure everything is ok.

  • Thank you guys for posting this. It was a breeze with your videos. I'll definitely come back for parts in the future from you all.

  • This video will be a great complement to my English classes. Thank you.

  • Thank you for making this video! This video helped out a lot when I did the forks on my RM 250. Rocky mtn also has best customer service!

  • when you drain the oil, wouldnt you need to unscrew the dampering rod aswell to get oil out from that part or will that pumpin you did will do just fine?

  • @budubum - most forks will usually pump out. If not, take the big bolt out of the bottom - it will dump out.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks but how do i know that everything is out so that i wouldnt need to take the bottom bolt? itd need a special tool to do that to hold the rod.

  • @budubum - you can feel it. There is resistance with the oil and none when it is all out. Use an impact gun if you need to remove it. You don't need a holder.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks ATVMC. you are very helpfull

  • If you wanted to clean out all the junk from the bottom of the fork it would be a good idea to un-bolt the rod from the bottom so you could take it completely apart. Pumping it will get enough of the oil out.

  • took me awhile to do my fork job. i noticed that there is a bleed hole and i am not to exceed that otherwise itd defeat the purpose of pumping the air out in the first place. nice vid. twas here i taught myself how t do forkjob.

  • i did my ffork seals thanks for the help, what brand and size forks are those they look almost exact to my 46 mm kyb

  • @dennissteakin - the ones in this video are 48mm KYB, pretty much the same as your 46mm.

  • will this work on showa 37mm front forks? i have a honda cr80 from 2000. thanks in advance.

  • @budubum - they are similar. refer to your manual as well.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks for replying. im actually very confident withd oing this right now. only thing that is missing is that tool that you slam the metal parts lock inside the fork. its too expensive for me at the moment to buy one. was hoping i could work this out around by using a PVC tube instead. will that do? will it hold and not scratch anything on in the inner tube area?

  • @budubum - if you get the right size of PVC I am sure you could work it out. I tried PVC before and found it took a lot of time and didn't work as good. In my personal opinion, the $40 tool is well worth the cost.

  • @RockyMountainATVMC thanks man. i really appreciate you helping me out along with the other bikers here to learn to maintain their bikes.

  • thanks erik

  • hy erik good vid i have a ktm 380 sx 2002could you please help me i want to fix my forks and just want to now what tools and parts im goin to need and if you guys have the manual and all the tools and parts needed i just want to buy the tool an parts from you thanks

  • feel free to check out our website. once you key your make and model in you can see what parts are available for your machine. I suggest getting a 43mm seal driver, seal bullet, and oil height measuring tool. Oh, and don't forget the seals and 5 weight oil.

  • ive been looking at your videos you need to make a video on how to loosen/siffen front and back suspention

  • refer to the manual. it is quite simple. You should have rebound and compressing adjusters on the suspension.

  • i bought my 07 rm85 at a motosports store called seaville motosports they sell suzuki and yamaha it did not come with an owners manual if you get the time post a video

  • If you bought it new, demand the manual. If it was used, i suggest ordering one. Well worth the money.

  • i bought it used with only 9 hours do you know of any website that i can just see the owners manual not purchase

  • i don't know of a site, but i would spend the money to get one and protect your investment.

  • i will thank you

  • i have a 1996 kx250. there is no oil in my fork can i just add oil to see if there is a leak?????let me no thank

  • i have a 2005 yz250, do i need to take my air realeasr valves off the top before starting?

  • No, but it is a good idea to bleed the extra pressure. if you have a 2005, you should refer to the dual chamber fork video. 2005 is the first year the YZ went to that fork.

  • how do i make my front forks stiffer

  • Refer to your manual. Most likely you need to turn in your compression adjusters.

  • Thank you SO MUCH Rocky Mountain MC. I read my service manual and researched on forums. Sometimes physically seeing someone do things CORRECTLY makes a huge difference I have been riding for 15 years and have always taken my forks to the shop for seals. I used a propane torch to heat the lower part of the outer before I slide hammered because I wanted to ensure I did not damage the bushings. I WILL BUY PARTS FROM RCMC BECAUSE YOU MADE THIS VIDEO, KEEP EM COMING.

  • WE are glad it helped. Thanks!

  • how mad would it be if when guys bought a bike, they bought a manual too. and maybe read it. nice vid thanks.

  • How much oil should a standard 2004 ktm sx 65 fork be filled with as i do not have the manual?

or how much empty area should there be?

  • I don't have the specs. I suggest buying a manual for that bike. Well worth the money.

  • I found and downloaded an online manual, trouble is it says its for 2003 model, mines 2004, will it make any difference as the forks are the same. It says oil capacity per fork is 210ccm, is that the amount of OIL or free space?

  • You need to check a 2004 manual to be sure. CCM is a measurement of volume so it would be referring to oil volume, not height.

  • This guy is not doing this to research your oil levels. Do the research or buy a manual.

  • that was fast!! haha... i still havent changed mine and its been months!! its just im scared of taking off the forks and when putting them back on if they slid or somthing cause a gorilla didnt tighten them haha

  • but if the manuel says volume i use the measuring cup?

  • You got it!

  • instead of using that bullet couldnt you just put some electrical tape or somthin to keep the seals from catching that lip?.. and that little syringe thing could you just use the measuring cup that you do for mixing gas?

  • Sure you could use tape, it just isn't as easy as the bullet. You still need the syringe because you are measureing the empty area of the fork, not the fork oil volume.

  • hi

    great video.

i am attempting to change the fork seals on my 96 kx250, as one of the fork tubes was leaking oil. in my manual it wants me to stick a motion pro damper rod fork tool in the top, so i assume they must be different forks to these?

i have already bought 'forks seals' which i believe must be the dust seals. will i have to buy anything else to replace?

    thanks

  • Your 96 will be very similar to the forks in this video. The cartridge holding tool is not necessary unless you are removing the cartridge from the valve stack at the bottom of the fork, which you don't need to do to change seals (even if you wanted to the holding tool is not necessary if you use a pneumatic impact to remove the bottom Allen). Fork seals are fork seals. Dust seals are dust seals or wipers. It is recommended you replace both, but dust seals can be reused if in OK shape.

  • hi

how much fork oil do i use in my 02 cr125 like how many quarts of fork oil do i need

  • You will need to check your manual for the specs.

  • my 2004 oem yamaha service manual does not give a level it just gives a amount in ounces,i have the tool can you help me out?

  • That is strange, I used to have an 04 and it gave the oil height instead of volume. I don't recall what the height was. I would make sure you have the old oil drained all the way and just add the volume your manual suggests.

  • ok thanks guys love the videos

  • will this video work on my stock 2002 cr125 forks or are they diffrent from forks in video?

  • This is the right video for your 2002 CR125 fork. Pretty much the exact same.

  • Are the only two bushings that hold the fork in place the ones which you took off at 3:32? Is there one or more in the outer fork tube? The reason im saying this is because i think the bushings are bad in my RM 250's forks beacuse there is some play near the axle and I belive that would be caused by bad bushings am i right? BTW, I have never really worked on forks before but im a pro with engines but i really need to try them.

  • There are only 2 bushings in each of your forks. They are removed from the inner tube at about 3:23. The top one fits into a groove in the inner tube. It is teflon coated and slides against the outer tube. The lower one fits below the fork seal in the outer tube (once assembled) and slides against the inner tube. Yes you will get a little slop in the fork when they wear out. Even when new, you may notice a little slop when the fork is fully expanded though.

  • i got new fork seals on my ttr125 and 2 new tires and the shop charged me 500$

  • lol wtf 500$? what year is ttr and how much you got it for....i had a ttr 125 my first bike.

  • Comment removed

  • not really but depending on youur skill level it should work fine on a track

  • No, it won't work fine on a track. it will NEVER be a track bike. Face that right now. It would be okay to race in mini trail, but thats it.

  • how do u get the actual forks off the bike? the part on the bottom of the fork prevents me from sliding them out through the top and my manuel doesnt go through phsyically taking them off

  • Take the wheel off and slide them out through the bottom.

  • great vid thanks!

  • This video was very helpful, is a carb rebuild video coming in the future?

  • Does my 1996 Honda CR500 have cartridge type forks like this, The forks are kyaba on it now.

  • hey i have a 05 yz125 and the seals are going out im gonna buy some buy i would like to know what exactly do those seal covers do.. can you help me out on wich parts to buy.. and i have rg3 forks the seals are still the same right?

  • You need seals, fork cap wrench, seal driver, and oil. A ration rite and motion pro seal bullets are nice to have too. You need to watch our dual chamber fork seal video for 2005 and newer YZ's though.

  • Are the forks on a 2007 YZ250F cartridge or twin chamber?

  • Twin chamber type. Almost identical to the one in our video.

  • thanks man, these videos are awesome btw. Thanks a ton for them.

  • what does a 2004 crf250r have? cartridge type or twin chamber?
