Water and thermite. Nice. Normally I would make fun of someone for being so foolish. But seeing as you actually waited for the reaction to go to completion, I see no reason to do that.
This I know, i've seen ice explode and send dangerous shrapnel flying around the place. We only doused it after the violent reaction had finished and it was just a smoldering heap.
some people are a bit confused on the setup here. basically we have the ladders to suspend a ceramic pot. so that the thermite could release through the hole in it, and onto four over trays on the ground, however not long after lighting, the wires holding the pot up disintegrated and the pot fell making a mess of everything.

never use water to attempt to disable a thermite reaction. to quote :
"Mixing thermite with water can be counterintuitively dangerous, causing a phreatomagmatic fragmentation explosion. "
