That was pretty dang good for her first ride. The first horse that I rode was definitely not has gentle as this one was. I think it is always neat to see people that have never ridden ride their first horse. Good job.
I couldn't agree more! Maybe I'm the one saying things wrong--I agree with you completely about learning the hard way. My first instructor wouldn't let you get on the pony unless it was SPOTLESS. One woodchip in the tail or dirty patch and it was back to the barn you went! But I do believe in baby-steps to get there. Princess was also a pretty old horse and pretty much retired... it's almost unfair to ask a good old gal like that to put up with that! ;)
Wow, can Melanie help me with my two point?! Her two point is awesome! She has a lot of natural ability because she looks fantastic for having this be her first lesson. Princess is a dream too, what a beautiful (what young girl doesn't want to ride the white horse??) and sweet horse. She seems like a kind teacher. I am guessing that you and Melanie share some genetic material - maybe good riding runs in the family. Please tell her how wonderful I though she did in her first lesson!
Melanie has great posture for her first lesson, and it was hard not to get teary over the cuteness of it all! :) Princess was so wonderful, quiet, and willing!
If anyone offers eq. advice on this video, be prepared for me to lay the smack down. This is Melanie's first riding lesson of her life, and if you try to pass any kind of judgment, I will unleash a world of hurt!
Sorry about all the comments but if shes only just starting to learn how to ride why would they make them get on with a step and why did they let them use a nosepiece instead of a bit im just curiose.
She got on with a step because the horse was 15.1 and Melanie is about 4'8"! Princess was wearing a hackamore because that is the bit her owner (the instructor) chose for her and works best for them.
I was just wondering thats all. Shes a stunning mare and seems very genlte looking at her patience. Melanie did great by the way she seemed to pick up things very fast it's just even when we were little my trainers always thought me if the horse was to big to get on on your on you shouldnt ride them we were never allowed to use steps because real riders aparantly dint "need" them and so niether did we its just how i was raized thats all so i was just asking thats all dint mean to sound rude.
I use a step stool because it's easier on the horses back.Because when you mount you pull the horses back and that can hurt their back or mess up their spin, so thats why i use one, even if im riding a pony that i can easily get on with without a stool. Its just a nicer feeling on their back:)
Princess used to be ridden in what appeared to be a D-ring snaffle (based on a pic I've seen), but the instructor now has her in a hackamore because Princess had some type of scar on the side of her lip that would cause discomfort with a regular bit.
Aw the poor little thing. Its understandable they would change it not all people are that kind to their horses as sad as that is. Im glad this lady was that considerate and thanks for explaning it i feel bad for her now a mouth is an awfull place to get injured.
Sorry, I deleted your other comment by accident. This is Melanie's second time on a horse (the first time she got on and walked a couple of steps). Her leg was a little far back, but did you see the picture of her in two-point!? I was very proud of her. :)

Beautiful pony! And so clean--my pinto's white spots are usually yellow-ish (and that's on a good day). Good job, Melanie!

No no, you didn't sound rude at all! But I have a hard time believing that every person who owns a 16.3+hand horse can mount from the ground! ;)
