@trendkill2 Possessed - Seven Churches was released in 1985, while Death - Scream Bloody Gore - in 1989. So we can assume that Seven Churches was the first ever death metal album. How come Death was first when they released they debut 3 yeras later?

@trendkill23 although maybe you mean Mantas, I don't know if what they recorded was already death metal as I haven't listened to it (the title "Death by Metal" would say that it perhaps was), well if it was than it was indeed a year earlier than Possessed.

Spawn of Possession is technical death metal, Dying Fetus is brutal but also quite tech and I don't think Meshuggah is death metal but not bad otherwise. I do agree with an earlier comment that said when you spoke about early Death you should have played some early Death but decent for amateur work. That's my 2 cents anyway.

In terms of the downtuning why would  you have mentioned the bands you did? Entombed downtunded way before any of those bands. Additionally why would you play Death's more technical stuff in reference to their beginnings rather than from Scream Bloody Gore or Leporacy. I praise your for your attempt at an explanation of Death Metal but it does have some flaws in my opinion. So very frustrating!!!!!!

Man, it really bugs me to no end how Possessed is always credited as being the first death metal band, when the same year Sepultura released their first album which was far more death metal than Seven Churches. Not that I have anything against Possessed, I love Seven Churches, but its more thrash than death compared to Bestial Devastation

As i see it, Death Metal is just brutal. It's important to use the ''right'' scales, such as phrygian dominant, harmonic minor, etc. to get a really butal sound and as long as you can get that sound, there's not really much need for down-tuning a whole lot, although it can really add to the sound to down-tune at least one whole step. Bands like Septicflesh, Death, Necorphagist's more melodic songs, Children of Bodom, etc. aren't what i would call ''Pure Death Metal''.
