@trendkill2 Possessed - Seven Churches was released in 1985, while Death - Scream Bloody Gore - in 1989. So we can assume that Seven Churches was the first ever death metal album. How come Death was first when they released they debut 3 yeras later?
@trendkill23 although maybe you mean Mantas, I don't know if what they recorded was already death metal as I haven't listened to it (the title "Death by Metal" would say that it perhaps was), well if it was than it was indeed a year earlier than Possessed.
For a twenty minute vignette this is pretty damn fantastic. You really gave an accurate and well-rounded crash course in Death Metal with enough depth to be useful to even an experienced metalhead. What grade did you get?
@KROONTZ86 lol I agree! I find them pretty useful for very generally describing a band's sound, but where do you draw the line? Atmospheric Blackened Deathgrindcore?
I love how everybody who's from outside of WI pronounces alot of the cities of WI wrong. Waukesha is pronounced "Wah-keh-shaw" with no emphasis on any syllable.
But I'm just being uptight about pronunciation since I'm a Wisconsin native. Good little documentary nonetheless.
Spawn of Possession is technical death metal, Dying Fetus is brutal but also quite tech and I don't think Meshuggah is death metal but not bad otherwise. I do agree with an earlier comment that said when you spoke about early Death you should have played some early Death but decent for amateur work. That's my 2 cents anyway.
In terms of the downtuning why would you have mentioned the bands you did? Entombed downtunded way before any of those bands. Additionally why would you play Death's more technical stuff in reference to their beginnings rather than from Scream Bloody Gore or Leporacy. I praise your for your attempt at an explanation of Death Metal but it does have some flaws in my opinion. So very frustrating!!!!!!
Im a huge fan of Thrash metal and know a great deal about it but not so much death metal...you did a a great job of explaining the advent of it and all its sub-genres while making it interesting...A+
this is way better than the bullshit in metal: a headbangers journey which just made death metal seem like gore obsessed ignorant brutes with instruments
@mquirk00 I'll say the same thing to you I say to anyone that doesn't like it: make a better one if you're not satisfied with mine. I'll readily admit that this was rushed work, but until you make a better one, all you're doing is adding more views and comments to a video you don't like.
@Rorschached Don't blame me , blame youtube! I typed in Death Metal Documentary, not Joe Blows final exam project. And i got this.......!????? Might want to change your tags to something else. You wont get much positive feedback under Death Metal Documentary. Just being real dude.
@Rorschached And by the way, Youtube's video views counter is currently not working!ha ha. So it's like i never even watched this video. Although i wish i actually had'nt.
@Rorschached You could have at least recorded clean takes without coughing and stammered dialogue. The extra mile makes all the difference, my friend.
Man, it really bugs me to no end how Possessed is always credited as being the first death metal band, when the same year Sepultura released their first album which was far more death metal than Seven Churches. Not that I have anything against Possessed, I love Seven Churches, but its more thrash than death compared to Bestial Devastation
@39selrach seriously dude....do some research if you think you are right about something before you post so maybe you wont look like a COMPLETE idiot. look up a celtic frost interview and see how the band says it smart guy.
I think your first line should have been "Not a lot of twats listen to Death Metal since it is one of the most extreme genres of Metal and an acquired taste." Not to nitpick or anything, thumbs up on the vid.
if this was your final project you really schould have given your misreadings a second take... its anyway just a the reading of an essay with pictures .....by this i conclude that it wasnt supposed to be a film documentary but an essay???
As i see it, Death Metal is just brutal. It's important to use the ''right'' scales, such as phrygian dominant, harmonic minor, etc. to get a really butal sound and as long as you can get that sound, there's not really much need for down-tuning a whole lot, although it can really add to the sound to down-tune at least one whole step. Bands like Septicflesh, Death, Necorphagist's more melodic songs, Children of Bodom, etc. aren't what i would call ''Pure Death Metal''.
@Killstryke725 dude u are the fuckin retarded one. Venom heavily influenced thrash, death metal, black metal, and nwobhm. Venom is classified in all these genres. Learn your fuckin shit you stupid jackass!
@ScArFaCExReBs noooo not really.........venom is part of the early black metal genre along with bathory, and mercyful fate and some others tat i dont remember.......venom started out heavy metal......but in 1982 they took there lyrics and music more darker and extreme, and created the 1982 album black metal......get ur facts straight dumbass
@Killstryke725 so your saying that not one death metal band in the world was influenced by venom? black metal wasnt the only thing that was influenced by venom
