This video is GREAT! It makes such a good point . If this video upsets someone...then they should be likewise upset that many hearing parents put their young children through a potentially dangerous, expensive, and often unnecessary surgery so that their deaf child can be "hearing" just like them. Definitely something to think about...
I knew this was a "fake video" from early on in the video, It got me thinking about the young kids getting cochlear implants when they aren't old enough to make the decision. I was glad to find I was right and this was the point you were trying to make. Shocking people is a great way to grab their attention.

I was born hearing but my hearing dropped when i was 7 i got a HA i got my cochlear implant 2 years ago i consented i read the paper work and i signed the forms it was all my choice. BTW I speak good NZSL and endlish ,ASL signs are similar so i understand the video.

i cried, this is the best videos ever. i hate deaf kids getting CI and if hearing kids were made deaf i would hate it to. i am very much about decision, won't perm kids hair or do anything that can't be changed because kid decied. especially if kid wants to do something else when older. so bad of people to force others to something. this video is powerful message and excelent one.

Hey...Did your hearing parent did that to you? I noticed, you have slight paralyze on your right face...from CI? I have seen some deaf people paralyze their face after the Doctor installed the CI on them. They did not sue for malpracrice for their deaf children. SAD!!!!

As a child of deaf parents I know that my mother was excited to know that I could hear! When I did have hearing problems and was in danger of losing my hearing at the age of 9 my mother did everything possible to find a specialist that would save my hearing! I'm disgusted with these parents they are SELFISH they stoled their child's hearing! I am thankful that my deaf mom did everything to protect my hearing. Today has a lots of better like Closed Caption, ASL, VP, Sidekick, and lots of things that Deaf ppl can use and never left out anymore than in 1850 to 1979. after 1979 to now has lots of change and improve. What would you do if you know if your baby will have Usher's Syndrome and worst yet will be totally blind in his 20s.. would you prevent that child from CI??? So some CI are good for good reasons. I agree it is not a cure and all CI kids should learn to sign ....

Funny, my teenaged son has a CI, and is a leader in his Deaf church. He is fluent in ASL, and his Deaf friends ask his help whenever they have problems dealing with the hearing world: shopping, getting tickets for attractions, returning items, being cheated by merchants, translating between them and their hearing friends, associates, teachers, even parents.
If you intended this video for hearing parents thinking about C.I. their children, maybe you should have put in subtitles. Most parents who are thinking C.I. don't know ASL.
1. CI does not restore hearing in a deaf child. Only a small minority of tem with CI can understand speech.
2. Problems deaf people have from interacting with hearing people are not due to deafness, but solely to audismus.
3. When deafness is not seen as a deficit in a society, but as a variety, like where deaf members are majority or where it is free of audismus, then no such problems.
4. Therefore, the value of hearing and speech should be relativized. Exactly the point in the video.
I am simply amazed by the number of people who think it is right to force elective non-reversible surgeries- cochlear implants, circumcision, etc. - onto their children before they are old enough to make their own decisions.
Oh man at first I was real angry thinking it is cruel on children to remove hearing until near end of video LOL. I am deaf but if my child is born hearing or deaf I will love them the way they are and respect their choice to accept or refuse cochlear implant. I believe hearing child would be good interpreter esp for deaf parent. Also hearing child can hear something wrong and will warn deaf parents like fire alarm, tornado siren, gas pipe leak, theft break window, people yell for help, etc, etc.
wow that was so funny and i thought it was true story... but I had CI when i was 12 and I hate it.... My dad force me to have a CI and I never use CI since i was freshman yrs... it was sooo BOTHER ME BIG TIME!!!!!! Dont force the kids have a CI until the kids want it or not.. thanks.. My Whole family dont sign and but they are learning right now.. which is soo awesome.. I am soo proud that I am DEAF!!!
(2/2)Once time, I went to hospital with my mom when I was 13, I think, and a doctor gave detail about cochlear and how best it is comparing to hearing aid. I told doctor that I refused and I was still wearing hearing aid. My mom had to accept it,... Currently, I am still wearing hearing aid if it's necessary.

You have made up a good story about opposite story about between forcing a child to be deaf and to wear cochlear. A newborn baby, whether deaf or hearing, is a gift from God. Parents have a responsibility to teach the child life skills to see how the child functions before school age. Most hearing parents rush into making a decision to get a cochlear implant for their child. Will this help or destroy the child's self-esteem in the mainstream community? This is what hearing parents need to think about. Our society is not always kind to CI children.

We have deaf parents who would like to see deaf baby implanting CI. His story is poor example and appalling everyone in the entire deaf community. I am profound deaf and Aerospace Engineer facing many barriers in communication at work and at meeting. I wish I am hearing so that I can promote to higher position and better salary.

Good video example deaf parents forcing babes remove hearing vs hearing parents forcing babes become hearing with cochlear implants. i laugh those who believe kids will learn better with sound if implanted early -not highly true, very few success. i have friends who endurred this. i myself deaf & speak fluently, people don't think i'm deaf! Sadly, the cochler implants do not work well when you wait till you are 18 years old.... you may hear the sound, but not the speech range.... the sooner a child gets a cochlear implant the better...it's here to stay and we need to educate the cochlear implants that though a child gets a cochlear implant, he is still deaf and should be allowed to sign....
Putting CI on early ages especially babies and toddlers is crazy!! How can they communicate to let you know when they are having headaches or pain? And more scary when a small baby's skull with CI grows bigger when s/he gets older, what happen to skull, brain, etc inside. I strongly disagree with CI on small children.

Good point! The problem with the society is the obsession to "fit in the norm" and how they viewed ci as a gain rather than a deficient or a "fix". It is ok to be Deaf! I would never implant my two Deaf children and they are very happy healthy children since having ASL as a first language and a strong second language, English. They are confident and clear with their identities. Good one!

sweetlibrachik, Dont whine! What a selfish hearing parents had made for a deaf child--CI in head, training how to speak for years, going to hospital(second home), upgrading, fixing the sound, etc etc costly to a child. Forget it!!
Born deaf child should get ASL and communicate with parents for FREE pain!!!

Great Job!! I agree with everyone said about CI. I feel terrible about small kids to have to wear CI. I wish this have to be stop and let kids to get older and let them decide! Let God handle everything and have a mercy on hearing parents!

What would you do if you know if your baby will have Usher's Syndrome and worst yet will be totally blind in his 20s.. would you prevent that child from CI??? So some CI are good for good reasons. I agree it is not a cure and all CI kids should learn to sign ....

great job James! we need to show the world there is nothing wrong with being deaf. We have a bona-fide sign language, our Creator has blessed us with. Deaf people have rights to to live our lives the wayI think your video makes a valid point. People need to let children make their own decisions.

i am a parent of 2 children one who is deaf and the other is hearing.... when i watched this video my heart was breaking to see u would make a hearing child deaf until the end i finally realized it was basically about how the deaf community feels about getting C.I. and i do feel the same way because my deaf daughter is now 6 and i wouldnt do that to her it her ears and her decision when she is 18

I am the Half-breed. HoHearing.. I know both side of Culture of Deaf and Hearing. This video is.. No word for it.. It shocked me. It not even in the book of how I feel toward this video. So basically, you telling me that if parent are Deaf, Kids must be Deaf. A Parent who hearing.. Kids must be hearing. That.. that not even a RIGHT. He gives his points about how deaf community feels about CI on babies and toddlers. I prefer to let a child decide to have CI when a child desires to hear! Put hearing aids first until they wanted to get CI around 13 to 18 years old.
It is a joke at the end. He gives you a taste of your damn medicines!!

The person who posted it there was a deaf relative, a neice by marriage and she only asked that those who viewed it, go the full distance, watch the whole thing, so I did. I came to this thread to see the comments and now that I've come, I get the real reward, the very meaning and understanding of what the whole point of the video was directed toward. I thank Sarah and you people for helping me understand.

Funny, my teenaged son has a CI, and is a leader in his Deaf church. He is fluent in ASL, and his Deaf friends ask his help whenever they have problems dealing with the hearing world: shopping, getting tickets for attractions, returning items, being cheated by merchants, translating between them and their hearing friends, associates, teachers, even parents.

If you intended this video for hearing parents thinking about C.I. their children, maybe you should have put in subtitles. Most parents who are thinking C.I. don't know ASL.

1. CI does not restore hearing in a deaf child. Only a small minority of tem with CI can understand speech.
2. Problems deaf people have from interacting with hearing people are not due to deafness, but solely to audismus.
3. When deafness is not seen as a deficit in a society, but as a variety, like where deaf members are majority or where it is free of audismus, then no such problems.
4. Therefore, the value of hearing and speech should be relativized. Exactly the point in the video.

I am simply amazed by the number of people who think it is right to force elective non-reversible surgeries- cochlear implants, circumcision, etc. - onto their children before they are old enough to make their own decisions.

Oh man at first I was real angry thinking it is cruel on children to remove hearing until near end of video LOL. I am deaf but if my child is born hearing or deaf I will love them the way they are and respect their choice to accept or refuse cochlear implant. I believe hearing child would be good interpreter esp for deaf parent. Also hearing child can hear something wrong and will warn deaf parents like fire alarm, tornado siren, gas pipe leak, theft break window, people yell for help, etc, etc.

wow that was so funny and i thought it was true story... but I had CI when i was 12 and I hate it.... My dad force me to have a CI and I never use CI since i was freshman yrs... it was sooo BOTHER ME BIG TIME!!!!!! Dont force the kids have a CI until the kids want it or not.. thanks.. My Whole family dont sign and but they are learning right now.. which is soo awesome.. I am soo proud that I am DEAF!!!

(2/2)Once time, I went to hospital with my mom when I was 13, I think, and a doctor gave detail about cochlear and how best it is comparing to hearing aid. I told doctor that I refused and I was still wearing hearing aid. My mom had to accept it,... Currently, I am still wearing hearing aid if it's necessary.
I want to give you a suggestion, put subtitle in the video, so hearing and HH people can read and understand what you're saying

You have made up a good story about opposite story about between forcing a child to be deaf and to wear cochlear. Of course, I am not happy with some people who go ahead to put cochlear their deaf children in their early age.

A newborn baby, whether deaf or hearing, is a gift from God. Parents have a responsibility to teach the child life skills to see how the child functions before school age. Most hearing parents rush into making a decision to get a cochlear implant for their child. Will this help or destroy the child's self-esteem in the mainstream community? This is what hearing parents need to think about. Our society is not always kind to CI children.

I totally disagree with the notion about forcing hearing baby to be deaf. His point is sick. He is notorious for emotional destruction avoiding deaf babies having CI. We have deaf parents who would like to see deaf baby implanting CI. His story is poor example and appalling everyone in the entire deaf community. I am profound deaf and Aerospace Engineer facing many barriers in communication at work and at meeting. I wish I am hearing so that I can promote to higher position and better salary.

Good video example deaf parents forcing babes remove hearing vs hearing parents forcing babes become hearing with cochlear implants. i laugh those who believe kids will learn better with sound if implanted early -not highly true, very few success. i have friends who endurred this. i myself deaf & speak fluently, people don't think i'm deaf! As a kid I spent forever to correctly speak, it's like raping my life as those kids -leave them alone, let them enjoy being kids! Wish video's captioned :)

Sadly, the cochler implants do not work well when you wait till you are 18 years old.... you may hear the sound, but not the speech range.... the sooner a child gets a cochlear implant the better...it's here to stay and we need to educate the cochlear implants that though a child gets a cochlear implant, he is still deaf and should be allowed to sign....

Putting CI on early ages especially babies and toddlers is crazy!! How can they communicate to let you know when they are having headaches or pain? And more scary when a small baby's skull with CI grows bigger when s/he gets older, what happen to skull, brain, etc inside. I strongly disagree with CI on small children.

But you know, I myself have implant, I used to have hearing aids, but i lost all of my hearing, it got worse when I was 11, so I have an implant, but if I had a deaf child, he will not have an implant....I don't believe in implanting a child, that's why I rather if child really want implant he should wait till18...so yeah you made a good point...I thought you were serious...But let me tell you, even though I got implant, it doesn't make me hearing.

If you believe there is a God, then God made him hearing for a reason, period. If you don't believe there is a God, or feel you know what is better for your child than the Almighty, then you have still taken the choice out of your child's hands. You know, the person who now has to be deaf the rest of their life. Nothing against deaf people nor against being deaf, but shouldn't a decision that important, that will affect the rest of the child's life, be decided by the child?

Good point! The problem with the society is the obsession to "fit in the norm" and how they viewed ci as a gain rather than a deficient or a "fix". It is ok to be Deaf! I would never implant my two Deaf children and they are very happy healthy children since having ASL as a first language and a strong second language, English. They are confident and clear with their identities. Good one!
