One of the many hits by this great group. I was a weekend DJ in Lansing, MI while attending Michigan State and the Byrds got a lot of airplay. Check out My Back Pages which was my favorite.
Well I gotta say that this is way up there on my fav song list. It sticks with me. I recall the first time I heard it, and It is not showing signs of fraying with age. Just brilliant. Great sound on this post, thanks so much!
I feel so privileged in some ways. My father was terrible in many ways. However, I'm 35, going on 36. My favorite band is the Beatles, and the Byrds rank high up there. My father pushed his music on me, and I couldn't be more thankful for that. I try to do this with my son now, especially with the crap that's thrown at him. I can only hope it hold true for him as it did for me. Growing up with real music taught me to appreciate it, and drove me to an interest in classical, blues, and jazz.
@WayneThePhilosopher I was on the East Coast when the Byrds were playing this and we really were intrigued with what was going on at the West Coast at this time. They Really had the pulse. Then I went to L. A. and it was a real Mindset back then.
Its not that todays music isnt any good. Its just that The beatles,The Stones,The Beach Boys,The Doors,The Byrds,Hendrix,Cream,Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and alot of other bands raised the bar SOOOOO DAMN HIGH !!!
I've always thought that the song really sounded full until the guitar lead...then McGuinn does the lead and leaves Crosby to do the rhythm on the 6 string. Somehown, to me the dynamics of the song drop out only to return afater the lead and McGuinn resumesthe strumming on the Ric. I think it would have sounded better with the Ric keeping the rhythm chords while the lead was on the 6. Just my opinion
Genius!!! Gene Clarke at his Byrds best and those lead breaks take off (no pun intended). This is the greatest slab of mid sixties west coast pop ever...A
One of my all time favorite Byrds songs. An unmistakable sound, much copied by later groups. I had all their albums and knew all the songs by heart! They were a true supergroup before there were supergroups.
@davidturner9823 This song is a Gene Clarke masterpiece. If you want to listen to a 12-string Rickenbacker masterpiece, just go back to Mr Tambourine Man.
@SRone45 mcguinn picked up a 360/12 after he heard george play it. george was the first person rickenbacker ever gave the guitar to. they were all friends though so who cares really.
@johnnynocaster When I hear The Byrds, I am transported back through time into a better era. You and I have seen things that might not happen again. We have seen historical moments unfold before our very eyes!
I was 16 when this came out and I'll never forget the sound of McGuinn's Ric. I've always loved this song. I'm 61 now and I still play it quite often and it still takes me back to my younger days and the girlfriend I loved so much, who by the way dumped me for some scumbag.

That's just gorgeous. The harmonies and the "jangle" of the guitars just takes me back to California is the 60s. Damned amazing time, place and music.
When i first heard this and that Guitar back in '65, I thought Wow California's got a sound rivaling the Beatles. McCartney actually said they were a favorite of his.
@Dodo251 absolutely. every little thing, eight days a week, what youre doin, the byrds owe their career to that one beatles album. this byrds song however is still a classic and the solo is one of the best ever.
@geoffhoare1 Indeed it does... Timeless music...and at 61 as well, I'm looking forward to getting out of the rat race here...and suggestions on how you did it living in the Philippines?

But McGuinn took it to perfection.
