Wow the intro sounds a lot like "Khmer" by Nils Petter Molvaer. Really nice sound here, I could listen all day to this playing, especially in this style.
@youneedmorecowbell "Shave kid" ? It's a myth that it grows back thicker if you shave it. It gets "thicker" because a man's facial hair matures as he ages over many years, well beyond being a "kid" - that is, most men get hairier as they get older, something I'm sure you're aware of ;)
By the way, I have a "real beard" but I'm just a kid, too, if our host above is the measure of such things.
Great sounding guitar, but I'm curious as to how much is due to that "sustainer" pickup.
its like a violin, takes some getting used to but its not hard at all to learn. if you truely wanted to. you can tape off the frets with thinline small tape like we all used to in elementary school with our violins haha
@jawadahmad77 damn right. is could also be a phrygian dominant depending on the core note which we dont know :) but i would have tought of phrygian since he plays the first step a half tone.
oh i miss understood i thought you mean that steve vai used a single coil (strat type pickup) style fernandes sustainer haha. :-P anyway my bad. cheers!
The model shown is a Flaxwood custom fretless guitar, basically a Flaxwood Rautia model without frets and a sustainer pickup in the neck position.
The Flaxwood necks feel smooth, very comfortable to play with frets or fretless.
Playing a fretless guitar is something different to playing fretted since you have to press down the strings exactly where the fret would be in order to get the pitch right. It's difficult to play chords, and yes it takes time to practice - but then what doesn't?
@pkudlo If you don't really mean this and it is just your sense of humour, well...it needs improvement.....If you mean it, then where is your video? :)
for the love of god, why didn't you make another video without the background noise ?! this is such a nice smooth sound coming out of that guitar - it's a must to record this in peace.
Have you ever been to something like the Musikmesse, NAMM or anything? There is no such thing as "no background noise" at those shows ;) I would love to record another video with Jussi playing the fretless but there are some thousand miles between us.
The sound is even better without all that background noise... sorry for the bad quality. But it gives an idea of what it might be like :o) Playing is believing, so try one if you get the chance.
sounds terrorist

no. sustainer pickup. works the same but its not hand held, its mounted on the guitar body so you can play normally.
nice sound to. ive always wondered what would happen to mix a sustainer with a fretless. how mush is that thing going to be retailing at?

Awesome playing and guitar. Bad facial hair. Shave kid...It will grow back even thicker and look like a real beard.

Egyptian sound, not asian.
Sorrythatusirnam 2 years ago
Well... The Sinai Peninsula in Egypt is technically in Asia, so Egyptian sounding could be counted as Asian OR African sounding.

No its Anatolian....

It could sound Arabian and the middle east is part of Asia, so it could sound Asian :D

It's cool, but give me a week with one of those guitars and I'll play circles around that dude.

Video evidence when you're ready, please :)
This video is not about showing off guitar skill, though, but to give a rough impression of the Flaxwood fretless prototype guitar.

I mean in silence - you must re-do this video with no background noise.
what do I need to make you do that ? set you up with a blowjob ? cause I can do that.

Blowjobs would be nice, of course - haha :)

how can he make it sound like a flute like that? that can't just be the sustainer, can it?
AJ78910 3 years ago
Actually it is the fretless fingerboard which allows for the flute-like glissando. The sustainer adds to it - quite a lot.
But if I remember correctly some delay/reverb effect was used as well.
stratdrache 3 years ago
There's no shortage of delay (echo). Probably, plus a few more effects. And he's doing volume swells with the volume knob.
Kind of makes it hard to hear/ know what the guitar really sounds like.
Makes for a cool video, but not a great demo of the guitar.
elephantcup 2 years ago
I agree that the footage does not make a great demo of the guitar - like so many vids on YouTube. There is background noise, effects etc.
I played the guitar at the Frankfurt Messe, and I loved it, though I'm much more at ease with a fretted instrument.
If you have the opportunity to play a Flaxwood guitar somewhere... go for it.
It just might be that Jussi Reijonen is going to record a demo of his newest Flaxwood fretless prototype. You can e-mail him via the Flaxwood site.
