@89Poptarts There probably won't be anything big on Sprint until May/June, as that is when Sprint will turn on its new 4G LTE network. Until then, there will probably be only minor phone announcements from Sprint. One interesting recent item for Sprint is the ZTE Optik tablet. It's the first affordable tablet with decent specs from a major carrier. It launches March 11.
@Dthesupreme All I know is what I read in the blogs. What I've heard is that Samsung will update Galaxy S II phones sometime in the 1st quarter of 2012. Again, that's what I've heard unofficially.
No I want the desktop version on my phone all pages desktop but every time I get on the internet it shows only the mobile version however on my.ol evo it had options for desktop pages I have tried user:debug and user:useragent it works but only til I close the browser please help.
@shortdom107 I don't know that there is a way to always force the phone to display the standard web page instead of the mobile version. At least a few web sites have a link you can touch to view the full site (YouTube is one and so is Wirefly (dot) com). Perhaps someone will come along who knows how to set the phone to always show the full site.
No how do I turn off mobile pages on this phone its really bothering me awesome phone however it sucks when I had my evo and evo 3d I could go into settings and change it I have tried about:useragent and user:debug but nothing seems to hold as soon as I exit the browser I have to do it again.please help.
how can i erase the mobile pages from this phone i only want desktop pages in my browser doesn't have nothing under settings like my ol evo 3d did please help.
Ive noticed that this phone seems to get this occasional lag after typing into a textbox on websites and loses the bounce effect making it choppy. is there a possible fix to this?
i have had this phone for about 3 weeks and i have notice that it has been getting realy hot in the last few days and while charging it gets super hot. It never happen before.
I thought Dual Core CPU support wasn't introduced till Android 3, is this phone really running both cores?? Given the beastly specs of the phone, I wouldn't be surprised if the end user couldn't tell.
@chelabonis Yes, it has a place for attaching a phone charm. It's on the left side right above the volume rockers. The hole is really tiny. You have to remove the battery cover to finish attaching it. After sticking the strap through the front hole there's a little post inside on the other side (you'll see it when you remove the cover). The strap fits over it. Replace the battery cover and you're in business! I have a charm attached to mine right now.
This might be a dumb question, depending on who you are, but i recently had an iPhone 4 on AT&T and had to switch to Sprint and this phone popped to me, so i picked it up about 2 days before the iPhone 4S launch. Should i trade this phone back in for the iPhone, or keep it? I see reasons why and why not. Im just not sure.
@imserious2187 I think the Epic 4G Touch is the best phone on Sprint right now. I also like both the Photon and the EVO 3D, but the Epic 4G Touch is my favorite by a small margin.
Hi Bob I love your reviews! I had a questions....I know the Nexus S is first in line to get Ice Cream Sandwich but do you know if the Epic 4g touch phone will get it around the same time or maybe early next year?
@XxAlex1xX1 I really don't know if/when the Epic 4G Touch will get the update to Ice Cream Sandwich. I hope that it will but don't have enough information to know whether or not it will happen. I can say that the phone runs great now!
Hey Bob, just started watching your reviews. I think i spent about the last 2 hours going through your reviews because there just so detailed. You've helped me bring it down to two phones. The HTC 3D phone or this. What would you suggest?
@missbrooklyn25 my advice, get the Evo 3D. If you get this one you will come to love it because of everything, except you will start wanting to switch because of its terrible signal. It's like everything you want except the one most important thing, signal. Which really kills you to want to switch but also really want to keep the phone. Best thing you could do, just get the Evo 3D. You'll never have to lament over "this epic 4g touch would have been a wonderful phone"
@babyblueg4o9 I've spent all day wondering if I should cancel my contract and move to AT&T and get their version of the same phone. It has NFC, a slightly smaller screen which I imagine would add a little bit of battery life, and so far I've heard their version does not suffer this signal shenanigans. One person on sprint forum also said after going through multiple Sprint E4GT, they went to the AT&T one and it's all good(but I can't personally vouch if they're being honest, why lie though?).
I like both the EVO 3D and the Epic 4G Touch a lot. You know that I did a Schmackdown that compares the two, right? If I had to choose one, I'd get the Epic 4G Touch for its gorgeous display, lighter weight and faster response. The EVO 3D is more "fun" though...
Have you had consistent problem with the phone overheating with just regular not rooted or overclocked usage? I read from a chunk of ppl online that they replaced several of their Epic 4G Touch and they all overheat like crazy and won't charge and such. :/
@babyblueg4o9 funny you ask that, I actually do have signal problems, so does most of the people that have this phone, I don't know what to do. I did a side by side comparison with my friends evo 3d and his beat me, even though the evo 3d has bad reception, thinking about getting the photon, even though it's 200 megahertz slower :/ What to do you think?
@leafrunner123 the Photon has issues of its own. Heard it has the sleep of death and self restart issue. I love the E4GT, except the signal issue inside of buildings..I'll see if I can live around it.
@babyblueg4o9 Your right, I do love my epic touch as well, but I barely get any reception at my house and also I live in an area, where 4g is not even capable. You think I should get a new phone? Or deal with this issue?
@leafrunner123 considering one of the buildings that my E4GT is constantly roaming in is my university that I attend, meaning it's switching between roaming and cellular signal (for seconds to a couple of minutes then back to roaming). Which delays text messaging (I haven't even bothered with data or voice) and KILLS what normally is a superb battery. If you're getting terrible signal at home and really want to stay with Sprint and keep this phone. Maybe you could get an AirRave?
@babyblueg4o9 im actually considering getting the HTC arrive because I've seen amazing reviews about it. Also i already tried ios and android so why not have a change, you know? I might get an HTC arrive. Also i could update it to windows mango.
so when will the scmackdown gonna come between this one and the other sprint's superphones (E3D & Photon), this will be interesting on the internal comparison, including the camera betwee the 8MPX on this one and the Photon. Oh and i've heard that samsung's audio recording is bellow par among the other smartphones, I could be wrong....
@wijayaj001 The Schmackdown between the Epic 4G Touch and the Motorola Photon was posted last week... take a look! I hope to have a Schmackdown with the EVO 3D posted really soon, maybe later today.
@yumyaw That's the way I got the phone. Other than changing wallpaper and adding a few apps, I try not to do anything to the phones. That way, you see them more-or-less as they come out of the box.
@idi0televisi0n I think the Epic 4G Touch feels and looks classy. It somewhat resembles a bigger version of the Samsung Fascinate, which I thought was pretty classy. It doesn't feel cheap to me, but I know that others have more stringent requirements for lack of cheapness.
@lowspeed I expect to have a Schmackdown comparison with the EVO 3D done later today. Both have nice screens and I have not seen any annoying visual artifacts from either. Obviously, both have very different displays, however, and they do look different. I will cover that in the Schmackdown.
@djillest303 Hoo boy, that's putting me on the spot!
The Epic 4G Touch has the highest benchmark scores I've ever seen. It is slim, lightweight, elegant and has a beautiful display, and the camera is as good as any I've seen in a cell phone. That's one way to call a phone "best."
I still think the EVO 3D is more "fun" than the Epic 4G Touch. Both phones have plenty of power for the things I do.
@wirefly According to what you've said, that certainly seems like it's the best phone. What advantage does EVO 3D have over Epic 4G Touch besides 3D capabilities?
@pyeclam The EVO 3D has HTC's Sense 3.0 user interface, which I like much more than the UI on the Epic 4G Touch. The EVO 3D has a BIG dedicated camera button, which is nice. Add the fun factor of 3D and I think the EVO 3D provides some reasonable competition.
regarding battery life, you mentioned you have had it 3 days now. Can you share what time you unplug your phone in the morning and then what time your phone is dead/needs charging in the evening?
I have this phone pre-ordered but am getting nervous and thinking about cancelling because no one is talking about the battery life. So what can you tell us!?
@ninj4vidz I charge phones all the time. It's now 11:20AM and I have the Epic 4G Touch on a charger. I hate, hate, hate being stuck without a charge, so I'm a fanatic about charging.
That said, I've noticed that the 4G radio in the Epic 4G Touch uses a lot more power than the 3G radio or even WiFi. If I have 4G off, the battery loses only 5-6% overnight. With 4G on, the battery loses 10-15%. I don't have many widgets updating - no Facebook, Twitter or e-mail, for example.
@hansterpeace Tuesday is "...almost Friday"? Maybe we should have a "Thank god it's Tuesday" event.
The video you crave is rendering as I type this, so blame slow computers. I hope to have it uploaded on YouTube in an hour or so. That assumes there's no problems when I check the rendered video before uploading.
@wirefly There must have been an issue, cuz it's been 3 hours. When it comes to a new phone launch, each day is "closer to the launch date!" We crave the video!
@scb1898 It's uploaded and processing right now here on YouTube. Yes, the first render was bad, then I had to pack up my computer and leave. I uploaded from home.
I just realized from another vid that did a unboxing of this phone, it doesnt come with earphones.... I seriously hate usa when it comes to technology releases
@Elixofy I shot some video with the Epic 4G Touch and the audio is very good -- loud and clear. That says to me that there is a secondary mic and audio cancellation. I will discuss this in part-2 of the Epic 4G Touch review.
I preordered on Wirefly.. release date is the 16th.. does that mean I would receive it the 16th or it would be shipped the 16th? And yeah I understand that I may not be in the first batch of them.. just wondering if I was one of the first few that preordered if I might have the phone this weekend to play with.. Awesome video.. can't wait for part 2.. and the phone of course!
Hey Bob, could you check something for me on your review unit? Sprint's variant appears to be missing the little noise cancelling mic hole at the top like the Infuse, and International Galaxy SII has. Do you see it anywhere? Could they really have omitted noise cancellation on this?
@WillJayDad I'm pretty sure that the Epic 4G Touch has noise cancellation. As I mentioned above, I shot some video with it and the sound was loud and clear, much better than many other cell phones. It looks to me like there is a tiny audio slot at the bottom of the face (between the "Home" and "Back" keys), as well as a pinhole mic opeing on the bottom edge. Really not completely sure, but I can say the audio is very good.
@brandonlmbrt Be patient for just a little longer, guys. I plan to work on part-2 tomorrow (Tuesday) and have some good stuff already in the can for it. Thank you all for your incredibly passionate support... it wouldn't be fun doing this without all you avid viewers.
Bob sometimes i worry that you're a little to swayed but raw data/statistics.. No one denies the cold facts are that other phones have higher resolution i.e. qHD but the reality is they dont seem to look right, icons appear too small and text aint optomized. I sent my Sensation back because i thought the screen was dreadful, no colours and the added pixels paradoxically made it look more pixelated.
Super Amoled+ even with this resolution, is the pinnacle of screen technology (for now).
You're right that I pay attention to specs and data. And you're also right that pure specs do not necessarily describe the user experience. Still, no two pairs of eyes see things the same way -- I think the Sensation looks very nice. I liked it better than the S-AMOLED+ display on the DROID Charge, for example. But that's what makes horse races!
please BOB. mad respect for your reviews. May we have the part two as soon as possible. In the part 1 you had said it would take one or two days. you are the only one with this phone. im sure i speak for everyone.
@TheAndroidReviewz Interesting question and it will be answered by a Schmackdown, coming soon. Both phones have their charms. The Epic 4G Touch surprisingly feels lighter and sleeker, but I like the 3D camera in the EVO 3D. The E4GT has better benchmark numbers but the EVO 3D has higher resolution. Hmmmm... where's that Schmackdown??
Great review Bob, I'm canceling my Verizon account just to get this phone, and may I answer for you....... Part two of the review is due out next week as said in previous responses.
@alvinrieske i just did the same, canceled my verizon account and returned my droid 3 for a htc evo 3d from sprint, im keeping this until the epic 4g touch hits the store ^^
@opticpnoy1585 There are several HUGE differences between the Epic 4G Touch and the original Epic 4G. The original Epic 4G had a physical slide-out keyboard, a 4" display and a single-core processor. The Epic 4G Touch has no physical keyboard, a 4.5" display and a dual-core processor. That's just for a start!
Hey bob quick question - The european galaxy s2 has a 4.3 inch screen (same specs as the sprint one other than the 4.5 inch display).. do you think that because the screen is slightly bigger on the epic 4g touch it requires more of the processer to run? and if so do you think it is enough to cause downfalls such as significantly lower battery life and/or basic screen lag?
@BlownUpProjects The display on both the 4.3" and 4.5" versions are 480 x 800 pixel, and it is the pixel count that consumes processor power. So the bigger display on the Epic 4G Touch does not slow it down at all. However, a bigger display uses more battery power, as there is more physical area to light up. That's compensated in the Epic 4G Touch by having a larger battery.

Bob is this the best phone you've ever tested?
djillest303 5 months ago
@djillest303 Hoo boy, that's putting me on the spot!
The Epic 4G Touch has the highest benchmark scores I've ever seen. It is slim, lightweight, elegant and has a beautiful display, and the camera is as good as any I've seen in a cell phone. That's one way to call a phone "best."
I still think the EVO 3D is more "fun" than the Epic 4G Touch. Both phones have plenty of power for the things I do.
I can be a hard guy to pin down...

wirefly 5 months ago
@wirefly According to what you've said, that certainly seems like it's the best phone. What advantage does EVO 3D have over Epic 4G Touch besides 3D capabilities?
pyeclam 5 months ago
@pyeclam The EVO 3D has HTC's Sense 3.0 user interface, which I like much more than the UI on the Epic 4G Touch. The EVO 3D has a BIG dedicated camera button, which is nice. Add the fun factor of 3D and I think the EVO 3D provides some reasonable competition.

Bob,
regarding battery life, you mentioned you have had it 3 days now. Can you share what time you unplug your phone in the morning and then what time your phone is dead/needs charging in the evening?
I have this phone pre-ordered but am getting nervous and thinking about cancelling because no one is talking about the battery life. So what can you tell us!?
thanks!
ninj4vidz 5 months ago

@scb1898 It's uploaded and processing right now here on YouTube. Yes, the first render was bad, then I had to pack up my computer and leave. I uploaded from home.

Bob, can you confirm if there is any secondary mic for noise cancellation purpose just like the international version??
Elixofy 5 months ago

WillJayDad 5 months ago
@WillJayDad I'm pretty sure that the Epic 4G Touch has noise cancellation. As I mentioned above, I shot some video with it and the sound was loud and clear, much better than many other cell phones. It looks to me like there is a tiny audio slot at the bottom of the face (between the "Home" and "Back" keys), as well as a pinhole mic opeing on the bottom edge. Really not completely sure, but I can say the audio is very good.

DeeDeeDanone 5 months ago
Bob sometimes i worry that you're a little to swayed but raw data/statistics.. No one denies the cold facts are that other phones have higher resolution i.e. qHD but the reality is they dont seem to look right, icons appear too small and text aint optomized. I sent my Sensation back because i thought the screen was dreadful, no colours and the added pixels paradoxically made it look more pixelated.
Super Amoled+ even with this resolution, is the pinnacle of screen technology (for now).
DeeDeeDanone 5 months ago
@DeeDeeDanone I didn't see this until just now...
But that's what makes horse races!

alvinrieske 5 months ago
@TheAndroidReviewz Interesting question and it will be answered by a Schmackdown, coming soon. Both phones have their charms. The Epic 4G Touch surprisingly feels lighter and sleeker, but I like the 3D camera in the EVO 3D. The E4GT has better benchmark numbers but the EVO 3D has higher resolution. Hmmmm... where's that Schmackdown??

Hey bob wats the differents between the old version and this version??
opticpnoy1585 5 months ago
@opticpnoy1585 There are several HUGE differences between the Epic 4G Touch and the original Epic 4G. The original Epic 4G had a physical slide-out keyboard, a 4" display and a single-core processor. The Epic 4G Touch has no physical keyboard, a 4.5" display and a dual-core processor. That's just for a start!
Bob at Wirefly
wirefly 5 months ago
Hey bob quick question - The european galaxy s2 has a 4.3 inch screen (same specs as the sprint one other than the 4.5 inch display).. do you think that because the screen is slightly bigger on the epic 4g touch it requires more of the processer to run? and if so do you think it is enough to cause downfalls such as significantly lower battery life and/or basic screen lag?
BlownUpProjects 5 months ago
@BlownUpProjects The display on both the 4.3" and 4.5" versions are 480 x 800 pixel, and it is the pixel count that consumes processor power. So the bigger display on the Epic 4G Touch does not slow it down at all. However, a bigger display uses more battery power, as there is more physical area to light up. That's compensated in the Epic 4G Touch by having a larger battery.
