Dear CXhaust, my CX650Turbo makes the same sound during starting. As your video is already from some time ago, I was wondering: did you find out what the problem was?
My brother and I had one that fried its starter clutch. We got lazy and brought it to the shop, wasn't a cheap fix, but worth it. I still miss that bike terribly.
Once running it sounds pretty good. The CX bikes had a lot of problems with the cam chain tensioner, and the chain made a terrible noise when that failed. Just push start it till you can get the problem fixed.
@douglas787 Yup, I used to have one and the tensioner broke. Then the chain broke, resulting in bent valves and a lot of other problems. Nice bike though, really miss it.
Starter clutch gone. And a 1:37 video of you grinding away on it. Good Lord. Keep that up and you'll be replacing your crankshaft, too, because all the commotion of that abuse gets transferred straight to the needle bearings on the crankshaft, which soon gets destroyed.
could be missing teath on the starter, missing teeth on either side of the starter reduction gear or teeth on the ring gear mounted behind the magneto. hope it is the starter tho...
im getting a 82 cx500tc turbo engine and frame....would yall sugest working on it...sitting for about 7 years:(....no title so cant make it street legal so its going to be a goakrt engine useing a dana 40 rear end
those are awesome bikes. best of luck and whatever you do,fix it up and keep it, don't sell yours like i did, you will regret it. none finer available overall.
Starter clutch not engaging, when the engine does fire up sounds like the dreaded cam chain rattle of which is leathel if left un adjusted. One knackered engine will be the result. Drop the oil take the filter housing off rip out the paper from the element check for silver/copper coloured swarf if evident remove engine & investigate further.
espero que haiias cambiado el bendix porque en el invierno no la arrancas mas!!

@douglas787 how would push starting it bypass the cam chain tensioner??? it wouldnt run without the cams... that sounded like a bad starter clutch

Shame your starter clutch is bad... but it did give the characteristic CX tonkle-tonkle-tonkle at idle!

It isn't the starter motor, it's the starter DRIVE.

Keep doing that and you will do more damage. Replace or rebuild the starter motor. Sicky starter solinoid.
