It's a common play for a defenceman to go into the corner and retrieve a puck that has been dumped into the defensive zone, so that he can pass it to his forwards and clear the zone. It's done multiple times throughout the course of a game. Sometimes, the forward of the opposing team chases the puck into the zone and hits the defenceman in an attempt to gain possession of the puck.
@Maximus047 Ference could have easily pinned McDonagh to the boards (with or without a hit), but instead he delivered an illegal check. It was illegal because he hit McDonagh in the numbers on the back of the jersey, and the degree of violence involved.

It's a common play for a defenceman to go into the corner and retrieve a puck that has been dumped into the defensive zone, so that he can pass it to his forwards and clear the zone. It's done multiple times throughout the course of a game. Sometimes, the forward of the opposing team chases the puck into the zone and hits the defenceman in an attempt to gain possession of the puck.

This was clearly a boarding and it was dirty but this is not a 3 game suspension worth hit. this was a 1 game maybe 2 games but 3 is pushing it. Ference never gets suspended and he doesn't play dirty, i think he was going to fast for the puck and hit him pretty hard, worth a penalty and a suspension but not for 3 games. Brandon Shannahan has yet again gave out a suspension that was not worth the penalty.
