Do any of the pipes in the first area go anywhere? You skip them all.
Playing the audio has never screwed up my recordings. I just have to turn it up really high so it can be heard over my voice.

yes they do, but you need to have activated the red switch before you can enter. There are a lot of hidden areas you can reach if you do something special. Most of them are a challenge to cross.
