Wow!! What a marvellously focused and invigorating version! The danger here is that performances like this might encourages more ensembles to make do without a conductor =)
Just in passing, Elgar's "Introduction and Allegro for Strings, opus 47" was the music chosen for the 1973 BBC TV adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's immortal novel, "Jane Eyre".
Even after all these years (more than 30!...), everytime I hear the "Introduction and Allegro for Strings", this mini-serial comes immediately (!) into my mind - and I assure you I'm not the only "Jane Eyre (1973)" fan to feel that experience...
@roskruge - I didn't know that. As far as I remember, that documentary about Elgar was never broadcasted here in Portugal. Thank you for your information!
Fabulous! Every note. Quintessentially British. I am pinching myself that Britain has a composer who is up there in the bunch of composers immediately below Mozart, Beethoven and Bach.
hate to be boring but that was totally fantastic! my favourite Elgar and so compelling and so much passion it brings tears to my eyes many years I visited Elgar's birthplace on my bike and i always wanted to cycle in the Malvern Hills with Introduction and Allegro on headphones (i know its dangerous! what a way to go!) again fantastic and thank you so much!
@KingOfPrawns - He he! I totally know what you mean. It has been a long time ambition of mine to listen to Introduction and Allegro while walking away from Herefordshire Beacon along the Malverns on a sultry summer evening. I too will need the tissues! Let me know when you're going....
OMG so am I! And yes, it's a hard piece, but it's also really awesome. Probably one of my favorite string orchestra works!
These guys do a remarkable job, not counting the fact that it's without a conductor. The fact that it's without conductor is remarkable in and of itself; one of the reasons that this piece is so hard is because it's so lushly written. So, congratulations to these guys for attempting the piece and playing it incredibly well!
Great job !

@mendoncacorreia music was also used in the BBC documentary film "Elgar" from about 1962. On the life of Elgar. I have it on DVD.
