To monaJolly.......Latin American Titles. Here are some for you to check out. Make your own opinion! Amores Perros (My favorite) Maria Full of Grace Motorcycle Diaries Pan's Labyrinth Satanas Los Viajes del vientos Perro como Perro Sin Nombre La Sangre Y Ya Lluvia Bluff ..........and a documentary which you may find interesting and insightful. 'La Sierra'.
@monaJolly Pans Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) is beautiful. Be warned, it is a little dark/graphic, but is my favorite foreign film. It's a true masterpiece.
@monaJolly Here are some movie tittles that you might like and you can thank me later. Sin Nombre, Y Tu Mama Tambien, El Crimen Del Padre Amaro, Por La Libre, Rudo y Cursi and last but not least Amores Perros. Let me know how was the experience =).
@monaJolly there's Belle Epoque, Y Tu mama tambien, Sin nombre, The Secret in Their Eyes, Pan's Labrynth, All Aout My Mother, City of God
There are tons of great Hollywood movies, too, but you just have to know where to look. If you want recommendations for great american films I have those, too. =)
@monaJolly some you might like are: "El crimen de Padre Amaro", "Amore Perros", "Mala Educacion", "Volver", "Y tu mama Tambien", "The motorcycle diaries", and one that you might especially love and one of my favorites based on a true story about opression in Latin America "Machuca"... AMAZING!. Now for some French films: "Amelie", "Mon meilleur ami", "Priceless", "Paris I love you". Enjoy, that should keep you busy for a while!
@monaJolly Talento de Barrio was alright (the daddy yankee movie), City of God (movie is from brazil) and Sin Nombre(From central america, its about a guy in the ms-13 gang)
@monaJolly Nine queens, the devils backbone, el violin, motorcycle diaries, the truth is in their eyes, cell 211, el mariachi, ammores perros, sin nombre, open your eyes, and mother too, talk to her, time crimes are ALLL great movies for anyone into spanish cinema.
@monaJolly one of the p.a. that i work with switch movies with each other because we collect them, so here are a few titles from our collections:)
bella/ secret in their eyes/ mal de amores/ in the time of the butterflies/ pans labyrinth/ i started watching amores perros (and its ok so far)/ i am david (I thought it was good)/ the way back/ rescue dawn... hopefully you might enjoy some of those...
@monaJolly El Norte, Los pasos perdidos, Biutiful, Mujeres al borde de un ataco de nervios, Fresa y chocolate, Los abrazos rotos, A cada lado, Subterra.
Those are the ones I've seen! Not all of them are dramas, like Mujeres I'd say is kind of a comedy, but they're all solid films and I totally recommend them.
titowasagoodman1980 are you Colombian???? DIDNT THINK SO wtf are you talking about if you dont know ANYTHING about my BEAUTIFUL country! then SHUT UP!

What a wonderful way of showing the world what being Colombian is all about....smuggling drugs, disregard for human life, doing ANYTHING for a few extra bucks. I think we should make a film about the American way of life as well, you know...lynching blacks, exploiting the hopes of dreams of immigrates, invading sovereign countries, dispossessing Native Americans.....I bet that one will win best picture!!!!!!
I understand what you're saying about the Colombian stereotypes, but the story was sympathetic, and didn't glamorize any of the negative elements.
And, those "American way of life" plots you described have ALL been made. And I'm sure some of them won multiple awards. "Dances with Wolves" come to mind.
hey, i watched the film 2 days ago, in my spanish class...i liked the song in the end. i´m not sure if its called: yo no quiero-Asilo 38....can anybody tell me, if its right, and if yes, show me, were i can find this song?
She comes to America and gets a few thousand from smuggling drugs. The U.S. economy is in the toilet. Her relative living in New York is living in a shit hole. How much better was it for her to come here? She might have, at best, a 5% chance of making it with a kid and a good job that pays a little above minimum wage. The reality is that she will live on welfare. It would have been better for her to stay in her "own country" with her boyfriend willing to care for her.
But living in Colombia would have been worse for her because people in her communtiy made far less money than people in the US. This was done in 2004, so the economy was fine. She was better off doing what she did to come to America because at least her child would have a better life. She would be able to provide a secure place for her family. And the relative's house was far better than Maria's home in Colombia. This movie is amazing & everyone should see it.

There are some scenes in this movie that are so suspenseful I thought I was looking at a film by Alfred Hitchock. One of the best films of 2004.
