Iannucci is definitely a brilliant producer and collaborator but i wouldn't put him in the same league as Lee and Morris the same way i wouldn't put Herring in the same league. Brilliant, funny and on the nail but just not a genius like Morris or Lee.
The collaborations between these four and others (Coogan et al) are the best example as comedy as art i can think of, besting the classical comedies in anyone's books.
The stuff with vegas was a wind up but i think he did use it to head off any brand-related trouble before it started. I reckon it was pretty much the same sort of thing as these armando ianucci interviews are. I dont care if he made it up anyway; the point was that brand isn't in a position where his serious opinions on serious matters can be taken seriously
I lost a little respect for Stewart Lee after watching the extra from his last DVD, the interview with Johnny Vegas. I'm still enjoying his TV series though, I still think he's a great stand up. He should give up the shitty Russell Brand material though.
You can find the interview on YouTube. It was basically set up because Stewart Lee misquoted Russell Brand during a bit he did on the Big Brother race row. At first he claims it is a direct quote, when to anyone familiar with Brand's comedy it obviously isn't then back tracks and admits he just made it up.
I love Stew's stuff though and about to watch ep. 3 of his Comedy vehicle on iPlayer lol
I didn't get that impression. I don't think it was spoof at all. Just because they are comedians doesn't mean everything they say is a joke, there was certainly no incilination of one during the interview.
Wow, you really missed the point. And if you thought at all that the Russell Brand quote was direct to begin with, I doubt there's much hope you'd get the nuance in the extra.
I think you missed my point. I knew it wasn't a direct quote. But not everyone would, and he was telling them it was a direct quote, when of course it wasn't. The extra with Johnny Vegas was there for legal reasons.
I'm really not having a go at you, but the Vegas thing was clearly the two of them having a laugh about Lee's audacity in making something up, for comic purposes, which was so easily verifiable as false. It's really obvious from the way in which Vegas keeps going after him, and Lee keeps having to make more and more intellectual twists in order to keep 'justifying' it to himself. In the interview, Lee is playing the part of a 'self important artist', who can't admit he's wrong. That's the joke.
Amazing.

He continues to surprise me with how much thought and brilliance he puts in to everything. He's always spot on.

I used to think that about Armando but then I watched The Armando Iannucci Shows. He's not as amazing as Chris "God" Morris but he's pretty genius.

The comedians comedian. The intellectuals comedian.
Whatever pretentious labels you give him he's still the best stand up, in my eyes, of all time.

Thank you for this.
The problem with iPlayer is that it is only available in the UK. Overseas viewers, such as I, have to rely on YouTube.
