Rachel Maddow's point is simple: Sarah Palin is profoundly popular among conservatives. She seems like a pretty unsavory person from her campaign, and from her dubious associations. So, given her popularity, conservatives who don't like her need to consider the fact that most conservatives do like her as they try to move forward.

I don't agree with conservatism at all but the conservatives I grew up with were intellectual powerhouses. I vehemently disagreed with them but I can honestly say that I both admired and respected those true conservatives, like William F. Buckley Jr, Milton Friedman, Barry Goldwater, and Ayn Rand. Conservatives ALWAYS fear the different, the other because they have things just the way they like it. Be they "dirty daygos", the "papist irish", inscrutable Chinese, illegal aliens or blacks rising out of poverty, conservatives by nature will be fearful and thus, react viciously to these people till they too join the ranks and then it will be a new target group.
