:sighs: So many people think they know all about the world of Geisha's. There is a difference between a Geisha and a Baishunfu. The Geisha's were women and girl's who danced, served drinks, played instruments, and just entertained men. The Baishunfu were usually women and girls who where sold into the occupation for either their debts or their family's debts, and in turn to make the debts shrink they were made to sell their bodies.
I hate how they take pictures of them without permission. Geisha are meant to have an element of mystery associated with them, and it's really agitating that modern culture kind of takes it away. During WWII, many okiya and tea houses were shut down. This is when the 'pleasure girls' ,as I call them, took advantage of the situation and started dressing like geisha to attrack more customers. You're either thinking of Liza Dalby (who didn't really become a geisha) or Fiona Graham (who did). You might... but the odds are not good. Well, try learning Japanese, it will be of course a must, and it will still be useful if you just keep interested in the culture, even if your dream proves to be impossible.

I got to go to the Miyako Odori this year in Gion. It was a a lot of fun. All the maiko were incredibly skilled dancers. Everything was so well done, those girls must have put in a lot of extra hours of practice to be able to have done it so well. Yeah there are some disagreements about the history it seems, but not matter how it used to be now it is all voluntary,.... the girls do it because they want to be a part of that tradition and they are willing to go through the hard training to do it.
There are others also in Kyoto, all five districts have tjeir "odori", four in Spring and one in Fall. I went to Kamogawa-odori last Sunday. Districts in other cities do their own, too, like Shimbashi in Tokyo (Azuma-odori).

:sighs: So many people think they know all about the world of Geisha's. There is a difference between a Geisha and a Baishunfu. The Geisha's were women and girl's who danced, served drinks, played instruments, and just entertained men. The Baishunfu were usually women and girls who where sold into the occupation for either their debts or their family's debts, and in turn to make the debts shrink they were made to sell their bodies.

I hate how they take pictures of them without permission. Geisha are meant to have an element of mystery associated with them, and it's really agitating that modern culture kind of takes it away. If you really HAVE to take a picture with them, then why not just ask "Shashin o onegaishimasu" and then say thank you afterward? Yeesh.

During WWII, many okiya and tea houses were shut down. This is when the 'pleasure girls' ,as I call them, took advantage of the situation and started dressing like geisha to attrack more customers. So, no, early geisha were not prostitutes, the 'pleasure girls' simply decided to play a little dress-up.

the real reason for a geisha wearing white foundation on their face and neck is because way back when they didint have electricity. And the lighting was poor. So the ladys would ware white makeup to brighten their face so everyone could see how pretty they were.

You're either thinking of Liza Dalby (who didn't really become a geisha) or Fiona Graham (who did). You might... but the odds are not good. Well, try learning Japanese, it will be of course a must, and it will still be useful if you just keep interested in the culture, even if your dream proves to be impossible.

I got to go to the Miyako Odori this year in Gion. It was a a lot of fun. All the maiko were incredibly skilled dancers. Everything was so well done, those girls must have put in a lot of extra hours of practice to be able to have done it so well. Yeah there are some disagreements about the history it seems, but not matter how it used to be now it is all voluntary,.... the girls do it because they want to be a part of that tradition and they are willing to go through the hard training to do it.

There are others also in Kyoto, all five districts have tjeir "odori", four in Spring and one in Fall. I went to Kamogawa-odori last Sunday. Districts in other cities do their own, too, like Shimbashi in Tokyo (Azuma-odori).
