I was wondering if you could answer a question on cold seals. I started making beads a few days ago and everything is working great, but sometimes when I try a cold seal to finish the top of the bead the cold seal sticks and won't just tap off. Any insight as to why this is happenening. Thanks for the help and your vids have answered many many questions.
I'm thinking that the punte is too hot when you attach it to the bead which is transfering too much heat and resulting in more of a hot seal than a cold seal. If you are using boro, heat the tip of the punte until it is slightly orange then let it cool until it looses its orange glow, then attach it to the bead.
That worked out perfectly thanks for responding to my question. Another question I have is about the boro that I am using. I unfortunately don't quite have the funds for a nice torch or a shop but I have been using a propane torch and plan on getting the oxygen attatchment for it but I was wondering why some of the glass I have changes to an ugly brownish color when I heat it? Is that because its just propane I'm using? Thank you for you time and help.
I'm surprised you can get boro hot enough to work with propane only and no O2. If you can wipe the brown off with a cloth after the glass cools it is carbon buildup. That is completely normal for flame annealing :-) But not what you want generally. Adding O2 will fix that problem.
yea that just about clears it up thanks for the vid. i didnt even know about hot seals befor now so thats cool the vid really help me out alot. umm i dont mean to ask but u dont have a extra pair of glasses on hand do u,im looking for to get anypair cuz i spent my money i had save all on my kit and come to find out everything came like hoses,torch,claps,graphite,tongs,4mm clear rods and 1" tubing, but no eye glasses i thought that was pretty weird but oh well im just looking for a loose pair?
Yes, it is strange glasses were not part of your kit. I do have 3 pair but they are all in use. Check out Wale Apparatus or for clip-ons I think Arrow Springs has the best selection.
right on man! too many people are unaware of the differences between hot and cold sealed joints! its a good video that the youtube glass community needs. great job and keep the tips coming!
I use cold seals on blowpipes a whole lot! I have a freeway nearby and you have train tracks nearby! cool!
