About the processor........ When you have multiple cores running at a certain speed, its like having more workers doing one job as opposed to one worker, being single core. Theoretically you gain twice or four times the efficiency with dual and quad processor, but the result isnt exactly exponential. its close, but sometimes the second or more cores are not needed so the protocols switch use to one core on occasion. It would be nice to assume they all run equally to get the job done.

Where i live, the 4870x2 is about 330euros while the GTX285 is 280 euros. This is a good 50 euros price difference, but when we are talking about overall performance, the 4870x2 is much better.
Heck it even beats the GTX 295 in many games, which is a full 80 euros more expensive. Granted the GTX 295 is the better card.

It keeps the framerate consistent with the screen refresh rate, when the hardware is capable to do so. For example you would see no more than 60fps on your average tft panel. You could see half that though, in cases that your hardware could not cope with the requested job.

The 4870X2 has dropped a lot in price, so now it is a better buy. Still, we are waiting for the refresh of the rv770. They are rumored to be called rv790. The rv870 will come at the end of the year. Also Nvidia's GT212 will be launched in a couple of months.
Rest assured, that both of these chips, will not be faster than two rv770s, aka the 4870X2. You will have to wait for dual rv790 and dual GT212 for better performance. This won't happen until June i guess.
Correct, but since framerate is variable we want to be as much higher than 60, so we we have a minimum as close to 60. If you have average 60 but the game runs indoors at 90fps and outdoors at 30fps (ie average 60), then we are talking about a bad gaming experience actually.
don't know why you deleleted our other comments... but i get an avg of 70 on my gt.. it only drops to 45 max... and well, i only spent 100 on it. sli it and i get into the 15 highest fraps recorded on ANY game.. for $200.....
I am building my PCs for years now and i add a small amount every year to keep them top notch. My previous good PC becomes the secondary etc. Still, it is not too expensive to get it all at once. The most expensive parts of my current rig are the 4870X2=450 euros,my Q9550=300 euros and the mobo Asus P5Q Deluxe=200 euros. The rest are cheaper. So with 1,5K you are ok (it rhymes too, lol)!

Don't be so sure about the e8500. I have witnessed myself a lot more than 50% CPU usage in many games. That means that more than 2 CPU cores are used by the drivers of the 4870X2.
Games may not be so multithreaded but the graphics card drivers are.
My Asus Commando is actually old by now. It only has PCIe 1.1 interconnections. My new mobo will be a PCIe 2.0 one and i expect even better performance with the new setup.

You should change your drivers every month, when ATI releases the new ones. The current driver is version 8.12. In January Catalyst 9.1 will be out, not 8.13, etc.
Heheh! For some people it is for other it is not. I never use Vsync and especially not in my videos.
Vsync forces your frame refresh rate to be no more than your screen resolution, which in most cases on TFTs is 60hz, aka 60 frames per second. That's why you don't see higher numbers dummy! :)
Not only that, but in difficult scenes, if the framerate drops to 50 fps, then due to vsync you get exactly 60/2 so it can sync, meaning 30 fps. Without it you still get 50!;)

At this specific level with these specific setting with the 8.8 driver i got, 50min, 177.66avg, 463 max. Measured with fraps.
I haven't tested ever since. I might run a couple new tests though because i got a new P5Q Deluxe mobo and a Q9550 and i'm curious of how they perform.

As you have seen form COD 4, your card is not broken. You are very stressed about your graphics card. Relax a bit. It's all about correct setup.
Unreal Tournament is capped at 60fps. All video cards play at 60fps. There quite a few games that are capped at 60fps actually. If you see videos with more than 60fps, it means that the uploader has unlocked it somehow.
Google it and you will find the answer! ;)
My suggestion for the 4870X2: Use 64bit OS and a Quad Core CPU.

I don't know the guy but not all level of every game run the same. There are some levels that are more difficult than other. So in one level you can get 80 fps and on the other 150 fps.
I dawnloaded the demo there were about 5 maps all did run the same! And the level which TigerTirectBlog was showing i did get 60 he did get 150! And do you know assassins creed ? It runs like shit two, i get average fps 30-50 thats poor right? And how much fps did you get in call of duty 5, i saw your video but i didnt see fps so good :)
If the cap is at 60fps it is normal that all maps run the same. When i play the game, either on my 4850 or my 4870X2 it runs the same. That does not mean that my 4870X2 runs like crap!;)
It seems to me that you may more attention to the games that do not run so well on ATIs hardware, than those that do run well. Why don't you pay attention to COD4, GRID, BIOSHOCK,FALLOUT 3, STALKER CLEAR SKY etc?
You can't have everything really.
As for COD5 i think it runs superbly on my 4870X2!:)
Bioshock average fps is 100-200, Stalker on dx10.1 All dx10.1 option on i get 20-40 fps average Fallout 3 i got 75 fps average! Grid 50 fps average! Not so good results ! 4870x2 is the best card? Bioshock's average was 181,447 for me, Grid 95,921 and Fallout i don't know. I have never seen it.

Anyway, i tried Assassins Creed on both the 4870X2 and the 4850 and i saw no great difference. The game is 60fps capped. Don't forget that!

Its not on the screen resolution, if i may correct u, its depends on the screens refresh rate. And more than 60 fps aint needed IMO, but even that depends on what u are playing.
Actually it's the ultra sensitive mic on my mobile. My new camera seems to be quite sensitive too. I run my 4870X2 at stock fan speed and it's barely audible.

I'm looking to buy an LCD PC monitor that does 1920X1200 and it has an HDMI connection so I also want to use my PS3 with it but the PS3 runs at 1920X1080 (1080P) and I wanted to know if it would look just as good? there's another monitor which does 1920X1080 natively and also has HDMI, which one would be better for the PS3? note that I would also do a lot of PC gaming.
Hey dude. 1920X1200 is a 16:10 resolution while 1920X1080 is a 16:9 resolution. Also 1920X1200 is a bit higher actually, so a bit more difficult for the graphics card. I use a 32''inch 1920X1080 HDTV as a monitor and it's great! Consoles run at 16:9 resolution so personally i would go for a 16:9 monitor. Most PS3 games run at 720P (1280X720) though, which is also a 16:9 resolution.;)

1920Χ1200 is a bit higher as i said. That's not the point though. If you plug in a native 1080P device, you will either get black bars or a strethed screen, both of which are bad imho. Better to have a native 1080P device.

Yes competition is very good for us consumers and we applaud it! No company loves us, whether it be Intel, AMD, Nvidia, you name it. Even your local pizza shop will screw you if they don't have competition.
The fact remains that the 4870X2 is the best single card currently. We are not very sure if a new GX2 card from Nvidia exists but rumor has it that it will be a 260GX2 and not a 280GX2.

The most expensive parts of my current rig are the 4870X2=450 euros,my Q9550=300 euros and the mobo Asus P5Q Deluxe=200 euros. The rest are cheaper. So with 1,5K you are ok (it rhymes too, lol)!

Don't be so sure about the e8500. I have witnessed myself a lot more than 50% CPU usage in many games. That means that more than 2 CPU cores are used by the drivers of the 4870X2.
Games may not be so multithreaded but the graphics card drivers are.
My Asus Commando is actually old by now. It only has PCIe 1.1 interconnections. My new mobo will be a PCIe 2.0 one and i expect even better performance with the new setup.
I also use Vista64.;)

This video was recorded using catalyst 8.8. The launch driver! The performance must be better already!
You should change your drivers every month, when ATI releases the new ones. The current driver is version 8.12. In January Catalyst 9.1 will be out, not 8.13, etc.

Heheh! For some people it is for other it is not. I never use Vsync and especially not in my videos.
Vsync forces your frame refresh rate to be no more than your screen resolution, which in most cases on TFTs is 60hz, aka 60 frames per second. That's why you don't see higher numbers dummy! :)
Not only that, but in difficult scenes, if the framerate drops to 50 fps, then due to vsync you get exactly 60/2 so it can sync, meaning 30 fps. Without it you still get 50!;)

Did you disable vsync from inside the game only or have you forced disabled it in CCC too?
If it is enabled in CCC then whatever you select in the game is forfeit.

At this specific level with these specific setting with the 8.8 driver i got, 50min, 177.66avg, 463 max. Measured with fraps.
I haven't tested ever since. I might run a couple new tests though because i got a new P5Q Deluxe mobo and a Q9550 and i'm curious of how they perform.

I had a Q6600@3600.
In unreal tournament 3, i got 70.110 fps on the 4870X2 while on my 4850 i got 78.420fps! LOL. Obviously not optimised driver back then.
I benched with Unreal3 bench tool, on DM_DEIMOS_BOT level with details at 5 and 4XAA forced through CCC.
Now that you mention it i don't have an Unreal Tournament 3 video, in my videos, do i?:P

As you have seen form COD 4, your card is not broken. You are very stressed about your graphics card. Relax a bit. It's all about correct setup.
Unreal Tournament is capped at 60fps. All video cards play at 60fps. There quite a few games that are capped at 60fps actually. If you see videos with more than 60fps, it means that the uploader has unlocked it somehow.
Google it and you will find the answer! ;)
My suggestion for the 4870X2: Use 64bit OS and a Quad Core CPU.

Up until now, for all my 4870X2 videos i used a Q6600@3600. From now on, for all my 4870X2 vids i will be using a Q9550@4100!
All 4870X2 are the same indeed and no the 4870 is not better than the X2. That's why they call it an X2. It's like two 4870s with 1GB each.

I don't know the guy but not all level of every game run the same. There are some levels that are more difficult than other. So in one level you can get 80 fps and on the other 150 fps.

If the cap is at 60fps it is normal that all maps run the same. When i play the game, either on my 4850 or my 4870X2 it runs the same. That does not mean that my 4870X2 runs like crap!;)
It seems to me that you may more attention to the games that do not run so well on ATIs hardware, than those that do run well. Why don't you pay attention to COD4, GRID, BIOSHOCK,FALLOUT 3, STALKER CLEAR SKY etc?
You can't have everything really.
As for COD5 i think it runs superbly on my 4870X2!:)

Bioshock average fps is 100-200, Stalker on dx10.1 All dx10.1 option on i get 20-40 fps average Fallout 3 i got 75 fps average! Grid 50 fps average! Not so good results ! 4870x2 is the best card? Bioshock's average was 181,447 for me, Grid 95,921 and Fallout i don't know. I have never seen it.
I answered about Assassin's Creed but i can't find the answer. What the hell. I think it didn't get posted and i closed the browser window before checking.
Anyway, i tried Assassins Creed on both the 4870X2 and the 4850 and i saw no great difference. The game is 60fps capped. Don't forget that!
I always use the latest Catalyst and that's that!

Dude i don't know really. My X2 runs like crazy since day one. Now i have 8.12 but most videos are recorded with the launch driver 8.8.
I can only speculate what's wrong.
1) Inefficient PSU
2) Inefficient CPU
3) Too little RAM! How much do you have?
4) Wrong OS. I have seen really huge differences form XP 32bit to Vista 64bit.
If you have 2GBs of RAM and 32bit OS, you are pretty much fucked. And i seriously believe that a Quad Core is a must for this card.

I didn't say anything about XP but you could see some differences. Some good some bad. My experience has shown that Vista 64 and 4GBs are the best combination for the 4870X2.

Sorry but i didn't get an alert for your previous message. There is something wrong with Youtube. It does not give alert for some messages.
Anyway, I would suggest:
1) Add another 2GBs of RAM
2) Use Vista 64
3) Overclock your CPU to 4.0Ghz or change it with a Quad Core and overclock it too!
We may have the same video card but our PCs are not the same.
Have a look at my new videos and observe the CPU usage at the end of the videos. The 4870X2 uses all cores!

Its not on the screen resolution, if i may correct u, its depends on the screens refresh rate. And more than 60 fps aint needed IMO, but even that depends on what u are playing.

Actually it's the ultra sensitive mic on my mobile. My new camera seems to be quite sensitive too. I run my 4870X2 at stock fan speed and it's barely audible.
The 4870 is quite good! :)

Hey guys I wanted to know what's the big difference between 1920X1200 and 1920X1080? I'm looking to buy an LCD PC monitor that does 1920X1200 and it has an HDMI connection so I also want to use my PS3 with it but the PS3 runs at 1920X1080 (1080P) and I wanted to know if it would look just as good? there's another monitor which does 1920X1080 natively and also has HDMI, which one would be better for the PS3? note that I would also do a lot of PC gaming.

Hey dude. 1920X1200 is a 16:10 resolution while 1920X1080 is a 16:9 resolution. Also 1920X1200 is a bit higher actually, so a bit more difficult for the graphics card. I use a 32''inch 1920X1080 HDTV as a monitor and it's great! Consoles run at 16:9 resolution so personally i would go for a 16:9 monitor. Most PS3 games run at 720P (1280X720) though, which is also a 16:9 resolution.;)

16:10 is slightly wider isn't it? anyway, I wanted to know because for some reason 1920X1080 resolutions are advertised as "true HD" while the others don't say anything (I know that pretty much every PC monitor is "HD") and I wanted to know if there's a difference in quality? shouldn't 1920X1200 be "higher"? anyway, this would mean the PS3 or the Xbox 360 on such a monitor would have some black bars at the top and bottom? as I already said though I also play PC games of course.

1920Χ1200 is a bit higher as i said. That's not the point though. If you plug in a native 1080P device, you will either get black bars or a strethed screen, both of which are bad imho. Better to have a native 1080P device.

aww comon guys ati wouldn't have the x2 if nvidia wasn't around because they wouldn't have any competition, and nvidia wouldn't be making the 350 series (280x2) if ati hadn't released the 4870x2 so nvidia can push ati's latest product down, thats how it goes ati makes something awesome nvidia has to respond with something equally awesome and so on. i usually go with who has the upper hand when i plan to upgrade, its the best of both worlds in my case.

Yes competition is very good for us consumers and we applaud it! No company loves us, whether it be Intel, AMD, Nvidia, you name it. Even your local pizza shop will screw you if they don't have competition.
The fact remains that the 4870X2 is the best single card currently. We are not very sure if a new GX2 card from Nvidia exists but rumor has it that it will be a 260GX2 and not a 280GX2.
