Two things make me believe these are fakes; Firstly the fact that the mice are all posed as though alive, the eruption and volcanic blast may have killed them instantly, but then thier little bodies would have collapsed and would have been no more than little lumps as they were buried in ash and lava. Secondly look at the casts made of other creatures and humans, these mice have way too much detail compared to all the other casts I have seen.

@puppieplay233 first of all, there wasn't any lava flow that came down vesuvius( the volcano's name) scientist know sign of lava anywhere and all people or animals their were simply killed by the toxic gas, just want to point that out, but i do wonder how the mice are so detailed too!

The volcano eruption was so fast they didnt have time to move, and over a period of time the bodies faded because of the heat of the volcano, therefore leaving us with a mouse nibbling cheese :O

even if they were unaware the heat makes the body curl up like a spider, these mice would be laying down somewhat curled and certainly not in the standing position of that one.

@exitre Ummmm, when hot ash falls on you from a volcano, it can literally happen in a split second. So it IS possible to be covered by ash and permanently frozen in that position and unearthed hundreds of years later. Open a science book instead of spending your time on Facebook.

@cjs33139 listen, i am not stupid. i know difference between plaster and volcano ash. mice do not die in relaxed state. especially when licking itself or standing curiously which is a relaxed state of a being and not an animal that senses danger. The material used on these mice/rats is not volcanic ash but plaster of some kind because volcanic ash does not look like this and you can see fine carving done on these mice/rats which is not possible or seen on those humans.

How could their form be preserved if they were obliterated? The casts from Pompeii are from things buried by ash, not incinerated by some mega-cloud of doom dreamt up by morons. The victims were those who stayed, for whatever reason, during the PROLONGED eruption suffocating in the mounting ash and toxic gases. Eventually they were submerged, as they rotted away the ash hardened. Try Pliny the Younger's account of his uncle's death at Pompeii in his letter to Tacitus instead of, you know, TV.

This video must be fake. A mouse would not be calmly grooming its fur whilst being covered by ash or a sudden pyroclastic flow. I have also seen tons of documentaries and visited pompeii and hercualeum several times over the last few years. These mice have never been mentioned.

@sacredgeometry It looked to me like an obvious joke and I've just found the site where the artist made these casts - they are bronze and they're for sale. If the mice had been real they would have been blasted into a corner before being petrified. Other casts of the dog etc.. were covered by softly falling ash but they too died in positions while trying to protect themselves. Thanks for replying to me in any case, All the best, Anthony

Then again, they were 12 miles from the summit. At that far away, I think the flow may well have cooled. I wonder, if they were instantly incinerated, how the ash fall covered them without loosing the shape of their bodies. Pyroclastic flows are poisonous gasses combined with ash, so they may have been just asphyxiated and left as the ash covered them.

I don't think it's so much the case that they weren't aware, it's that it happened so quickly. I know in the case of the people, many were caught while running away. Also, Mt. Vesuvius was a few miles away, those whose bodies were casts, were caught in the flow of hot ash. Also, If I remember correctly, Vesuvius has been grumbling for days. At the time of the actual eruption, the people (and mice) could have thought it was more of the same.
