Masaaki Suzuki is one of the best Bach performers in the world. Bach Collegium Japan is by any standards one of the greatest also. Their Bach interpretations are always awesome.
What can asiatic people understand about Bach ? Nothing...As we, european people, understand nothing about asiatic music...Bach is not universal at all, no composer is universal...every music is relative to a specific Culture.
@guinguette07 Speak for yourself. Your comment is not only monstrously racist, inappropriate and condescending, but display a profoundly narrow and utterly wrong observation of reality. My God, have a listen before you say anything else offensive. Suzuki, who studied under Koopman, is held to be among the best, by the Germans themselves no less. Next you'll ask "what can a Chinese person understand about the English language?"
Every composer is universal. It is only the limited listener who makes it less so. Loads of Europeans understand Asian music. Westerners have composed in oriental style to just as great an effect. Maybe it is only yourself who is limited. Will you tell Yo-yo Ma to stop playing the Cello because it isn't fit for a Chinese man to touch a Western instrument? Bach is German, by your strict argument, an Irishman shouldn't be able to understand his music.
European music and asian music weren't all that different a long time ago. This is Reel Around the Sun, an Irish tune, played by Chinese instrumentalists.

@guinguette07 I will hold my sarcasm for the comment you made. Have you listened to their recordings? I suggest you do.

@guinguette07 Europeans should stop listening to and playing jazz. Only Americans from Louisiana can truly understand Jazz. What a wise guy you are.
