Anyone can read tabs but a real musician reads music. Anyone who has done work as a studio musician knows reading music is a must. There are some instances where one might get off reading tabs but they are few if any. It is very very helpful to be able to read music for practical reasons to. You can pick up a piece of music written for anything and play it. Very helpful if you want to know what you will be working with.

@thorterra tabs are a way of reading music specified to guitarists and alike. If you say that guitarists aren't musicians because they read different format of music, then no one who reads music should be given a title of a musician.

@thorterra Also, sheet music is not as effective as tab is for guitarists because if you look at a piano, all the notes are in a line. to reach a flat or a sharp, you just move your finger up and over, but for the guitar, the notes are in a line on a string and in complex patterns up and down the frets.
