@nikkkinakamitie People do. A high-quality fursuit costs in the mid-thousands, and there are pros making them. A good one looks good and is comfortable; a cheap one will quickly fall apart, will be overly stuffy and will make viewers cringe; I've seen some creepy suits made for $200 with pounds of hot glue, zip ties and cross-stitch plastic.

Having been in a fursuit, I can say for certain that one reason people do it is to erase fears related to embarrassment. In some people, these fears are very deep-seated; you can either go through years of treatment, or you can hide your face for a little while and be someone completely different. I don't wear one all the time, but occasionally at events it's nice to be someone/something completely different for a while. I don't think of it as an obsessive problem; it's cheap, easy therapy.
