The fibres in the cloth absorbs the vibration of the string, making it vibrate for a lesser period of time.

It's almost like putting your whole hand over the strings to stop them from making sounds so that you can continue to the next note.

But doing that would be tiring if she were to do it quickly AND for a long time.
