For years I only heard Rita Coolidge's version and until I heard Boz Scaggs original I didn't even know he wrote it. So I bought a a 45' of Boz's version to go with the Coolidge record I already had. Boz definitely brought forth more depth to this song than Rita. Great song!

at 2:55 I think the correct original lyric is "owe it to the wind", but I noticed in the live versions, he started singing "throw it to the wind". I think it's interesting that possibly other artists covered his song and misunderstood the lyric or substituted the lyric and then boz may have heard it and agreed that it sounded better or made more sense and changed it himself.

This version is superior to Rita Coolidge's un-emotional one. Boz packs much passion into this, with an excellent arrangement (orchestration). If you agree with this, give the thumbs up to this! Rita's version sucks!

It sounds like you're still a little bitter at Rita's success with it after all these long years. I grew up with Rita's version and strangely enough dreamt of it last night even though I have never owned a Rita record. I love her version but will give you a thumbs up if you think it really matters. I'm sure Rita will cope with your opinion.

@spmontgomery ...Exactly! I'd like to add that the production on the Coolidge version was more polished. I also like the sweeter sound of a woman's voice on "sweeter" songs like this. There is more emotion in a woman's voice. Tenderness and sympathy is more emphasized. Great song either way.

Interesting how people's opinions can differ. This version does nothing for me, while Rita's drives me to tears. I wouldn't resort to saying either sucks though- to each their own. Thankfully there are many renditions of this beautiful piece to please just about anyone.
