I think I would've enjoyed this more if I hadn't heard it in so many films already. To appreciate the piece exclusively musically, instead of added to cinema, if that makes any sense.
Could you do a video of The Aviary from Carnival of the Animals? The flute would have a beautiful pattern. I was a (terrible) second violinist when my high school orchestra played this, and I remember listening to the flute part and being amazed.
I hate to admit it, but I probably wouldn't appreciate classical music if it weren't for you serving both performances and choices of them on a silver platter for me. I love this performance to death - it's flawless! I hope you keep making everything go right for brief moments (quite literally) forever.
They use this piece on hulu to advertise the "Criterion Collection" of films and it's been driving me nuts because I couldn't remember which section of Carnival of the Animals they were using! Thanks for clearing that up!
What program do you use to make the MIDI file before using it with the MAM player ? This is the step I don't know how to perform -- say I have a music sheet, a nice audio playing and I want to make the MIDI before using MAM.
Are there free softwares to "write" a partition then save it as MIDI ?
@Iphigenie2011 I put the score in Sibelius, export MIDI, record a MIDI click-track, then use software I wrote to map the exported MIDI to the click-track timings. With off-the-shelf tools, you'd need to edit the exported MIDI file to match the audio.
I would love to see the Clarinet Concerto in A, by Mozart, (any movement). Or the Clarinet quintet in A (first movement). I know how busy you are, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I love these videos!
Is this a new display mode? It's a bit harder to follow than the older ones, I think its just because some of the shapes aren't lighting up well enough.
I'm not a huge fan of Saint-Saëns either, but I like Le Carnaval des Animaux (and Danse Macabre, for that matter) for their light-heartedness and fun-spiritedness.
This is one of my two favorite parts of Le Carnaval, and I love that you used green as background for it - very fitting!
There's not enough distinction between the small piano note colors and highlighting the ones being played. I also think your choice of green background adds to this confusion, as it's too similar in color to the piano notes. Guess others feel the same. BEAUTIFUL work, just hard to see
I agree, the piano notes were not so clearly defined. Other than that I loved the way the chords floated against the (strings?) in the middle. The idea of sacrificing the formal arrangement for the enhanced spotlight on the counterpoint (or the essential interplay of certain parts) is very exciting!
interesting to have the green background, it was wired watching the video with that, but cool in how it makes this video stand out from the other videos
@DonnieTheKing I definitely see where you're coming from with that. It's interesting that you'd mention that too. Elfman was influenced greatly by Saint-Saens work. With his fluent connection between the visual and auditory senses (Clearly seen in Camille's Carnival/Danse Macabre). Fascinating stuff
@Jasutin No, it was just a coincidence; I started working on this many months ago, but it got pushed aside when more important things came up, and I just now got around to it. I'm not a huge fan of Saint-Saëns, so the odds of me doing another of his pieces is low. Sorry.
I'm so happy that you put new videos smalin. New visuals are pretty nice but I'm the one who likes black background. Still, the important part is the music isn't it? Thank you for posting these stuff.
@Doraeminemon01 Yes, it's pretty subtle. @BourbonFairytales asked for a version with a black background, and I'm making that now; I'll add a link to it to the FAQ once it's available. (It doesn't make that much difference.)
I've loved your work for a long time because, with it, people could really "see" music.
I have a suggestion to make though: make the yellowish elliptics more "jiggly".
For example: take two of those. When the first passes to the second, make it so that the end of the first is dragged and not the whole shape. Then when the end connects with the second, make the rest of the first shape dragged to the second as the music flows.
It's hard for me to express this, but did you follow?
@Keyaku1 Yes, I understand your suggestion. Have you watched all the versions of the cello suite that I've posted (follow the link from the "More info" in the version on this channel)? Some of those have things that are related to your idea.
"Aquarium" is featured in the trailers for the 1994 film Only You, the 1974 film The Godfather Part II, the 1995 film Babe, the 2006 film Charlotte's Web and the 2008 film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and appears to be one of the influences on the main theme in Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast and is especially prominent in the cue titled "The West Wing".
Warmest congratulations! Your earlier musical graphical expositions were all marvellous, but I think you've reached a new plateau with this. As beautiful to watch as to hear. To do both in conjunction ... wonderful.
@ozmark7 No, I've pretty much decided that DVDs aren't worth the trouble. I'm selling video downloads of some animations (on Cerizmo; see the link on my channel page), but even that is problematic (mostly because the download process is error-prone, and I end up having to spend lots of time help customers with a 99 cent sale that I make 60 cents on). Now that YouTube supports 1090p and decent audio, that seems like the way to go.
@smalin Actually I was speaking loosely, and really meant bought the compilation download. I'll go back and have a look what else you've added since I last looked. My only problem with them was that my old desktop processor couldn't keep up with the video. Was OK once I upgraded. I like the downloads 'cause I can view on my iPhone/iPod without mobile broadband constraints or chewing through my plan. I'm sorry you only make a few cents per sale though.
@ozmark7 I don't mind not much a lot of money per sale (of the downloadable videos), but I do mind having to spend time helping customers; I'd rather spend my time making videos.
