Mountain music should be declared a Mankind Heritage Treasure by the UN. Bravo Norman and Tony!

Smoking probably didn't help, but I'm fairly certain the reason his voice is shot is due to muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), which is actually a neuro-muscular disease affecting the throat and larynx. NPR radio host Diane Rheem and British folk singer Linda Thompson both have similar vocal disorders. In Linda's case treatment has almost fully restored her voice. Diane's treatments have helped her voice, although as her listeners know, it has been significantly affected the last few decades.
Neither style is better than the other. Tony is a Clarence White type that uses notes off the major scale to create that bluegrass "twang". Norman on the other hand played more along the scale with less pull offs and hammerons and more slides and crosspicks. Boths sound great but my personal favorite would be Tony the master of disaster on the flattop.
favorite thx 4 postin tonys playing is a little more restrained than usual prolly out of respect for norman norman is no slouch at flatpicking tho tony cut his teeth on clarence whites records u can hear it as 4 his singing voice its probably gone 2 much road whiskey and coke tony u rock bro forever voice or not my personal fav after clarence white the master
Take your pick, some smooth bluegrass. I've always thought that Tony was a bit more rigid but to beautiful results, Norman being a bit more relaxed. Hard to say whose technique is better.
Ihave always loved Tony's music so my comment doesn't mean I don't like him. But as a picker and lover of bluegrass I have to say if you watch the two Norman's music just jumps off the guitar while Tony is probably not as polished. Wayne
Listening to this song it is obvious that Norman is the smoother of the two, and is very relaxed while Tony seems to have to constantly work to get it done, Tks Wayne
Thank You For Your Douga
Norman's great though and speed isn't the end all. I'm only referring to pure guitar technique in flatpicking. Tony greatly admires Norman's playing and songwriting. In fact, I believe Norman is a wonderful song writer, something he probably doesn't get enough credit for.
Gambetta is definitely in the same league as the bluegrass players you mentioned. You must have missed his breathtaking playing together with Dan Crary and Tony Trischka, for example. Besides his unique versatility goes far beyond that. Celtic guitar, italian folk music, classic harp guitar music. He has obviously chosen not to limit himself to play in a traditional bluegrass band. But he would in my opinion fit in perfectly!
These two gentlemen are the true contemporary bluegrass guitar icons! No question about that. Beppe Gambetta is a the third, he has got more versatility!
I have to be honest, I don't think Gambetta is in the same league as Rice, Blake, Sutton, Kilby, David Grier, Tim Stafford, Clay Jones, John Moore, Steve Kaufman, and numerous others. Plus, Gambetta's style doesn't lend itself to playing in a band at all. I'm not saying he's a hack. Not at all but he has managed to impress people mostly with his liberal use of triplets, in my opinion. I just don't see the appeal in his style but to each his own.

Norman Blake is such an idiot. Is guitar playing..like..the notes he play, sound dumb to me. Tony Rice sound smart and intense. But maybe that's just me.
You're putting down decades of work, friend. Decades of hard, good work. Not many people can do what Norman Blake has done. And especially not those modern rock infidels.
Man, you are way off! Norman is just as good as Tony. Maybe even better. Norman is a fantastic slide, fiddle and mandolin player too. The guy is a god among men!
Norman's great and he's a favorite of mine, but Tony is in another world. At least as far as tough playing goes. Here's a few quotes from Norman about Tony. "we both are conscious of making a certain kind of tone and dynamics. Speedwise, I don't hold him any candles there.
AND
" He is probably playing slower to play with me"
Norman said these things in reference to He and Tony playing together.
I know that Norman said those things. I'm a huge fan! I agree Tony is a great Flatpicker! But he is too slick for my taste. Norman is a multiinstrumentalist, he plays a bunch of other instruments as well as guitar. His mandolin playing is really something else! Norman is also a great songwriter! In my book he is one of the greatest American songwriters working today. I own all his studio albums, and it amazes me that the guy dosen't get more credit for some of the songs he's written! Pure talent
Lucky for all of us, there's room for Tony's quickness and slickness and Norman's more to the point playing. I think they make a wonderful combo. And I agree, Norman is a great songwriter. Only a few are in his songwriting league.
I don't believe it --- you actually did it - I love Tony and Norman too
