@maxbify Well considering the fact that the cars they go in are completely different, the job of the engines is totally different. (Road Racing vs. Oval Racing) The RPM ranges are no where near the same, F1 runs a totally different type of valvetrain to deal with the high RPM. The amount of money spent on just an engine is way higher then a NASCAR team spends on their engines. Oh and one more thing, Ever single part for a NASCAR motor can be bought over the counter. Need any more?
@koolerv8kid so you think the nascar guys can make a v8 go to bout 20000 rpm and pruduce like 2400hp without a supercharger or a turbo? 2400 hp cus i think that enine is about 7-8 litres.
@maxbify Stop assuming what i think. I said comparing them is retarded because the two engines are so drastically different. a 9000 RPM 5.8L V-8 can't be compared to an 18,000 RPM 2.4L F1 V-8. It's just ignorant. The only reason F1 Teams have such highly technological engines are because their budget allows it. Plus, F1 teams don't have to share their technology with anyone else. NASCAR teams have to use parts manufactured by the respective engine companies.
@maxbify You obviously don't know very much about engines, let alone purpose built racing engines. It wrong of me to assume you knew anything about this topic. My apologies. When you can tell me where I'm wrong and I believe what you say, we can continue this conversation.
@koolerv8kid im not saying that youre wrong, just that a nascar acing team could never build a f1 engine whit all the money in the world is my point. and if you want to win that nascar race, maby it would be a good idea to have some power or what? youre saying that you cant compare them, and thats the thing, that engine is totaly shit compared to a f1 engine
@maxbify You can do anything with enough money. That's not a reason to say NASCAR engines are shit. And NASCAR is governed by rules for engines... that's why they don't make any more power, because the rules don't allow them to. If NASCAR engines suck and don't compare to an F1 engine, what does? Because i can't think of anything.
@maxbify your logic makes no sense, at all. You say that a NASCAR engine is shit, but you can't give me one reason WHY it's shit. This conversation is over.
@maxbify you can't compare apples and oranges, but here is an interesting contrast... F1, race is about 1-1/2hrs in lenght, the engine is used a max of 2 races, giving the engine about 3hrs of life, now a NASCAR engine, race length 3-5ish hrs, engines used a max of 2 races, giving that engine a 6-10hr life. If you take a small engine and build it to make big hp, you will shorten it's lifespan regardless how much money you put into it, F1 are smaller and lighter...
@angusandleigh ...cars, therefore they require a smaller engine to be installed. Also due to such lightweight cars, they don't need the same kind of torque needed for a heavier, less aerodynamic car. A NASCAR engine would not likely fit into an F1 car, and by the same respect and F1 engine would not power a NASCAR as effectively as a big bore V-8. You don't need big coin to get a great engine, the 'old fashioned' Viper engine with it's truck based pushod design proves that over and over again.
@angusandleigh are you sure about the time a f1 ngine is used? if i remember rite they are only aloved to use like 10 engines per season or something, but im not sure
@maxbify Yeah, no now they are down to 8... you can use more, but suffer a 10 place drop on the starting grid each time they use the additional power plant.
I was telling my friend that nascar engines are beasy and he said they are just 350s and i was wondering how they did a steady 190 speed without the engine blowing ? there has to be some mods ?
i do prefer the sound of a NASCAR V8 tho lol. the V8 in the BMW E46 M3 GTR race car sounds pretty incredible too, theres a great dyno video of it on here. just look for ATSPEED M3 GTR ON DYNO, worth a watch
current F1 engines are naturally aspirated, 2.4 liter (146 cubic inch) 32 valve, 90 degree V8's. this spec has been used since 2006. they were producing approximately 750 - 800 hp at 19000rpm. however power figures vary understandably through the different engine manufacturers. since 2009 the rev limit has been reduced to 18000rpm.
Thats a great deal of power out of a 358 cubic inch race fuel aspirated (no power adders) Dodge V8 factory based Race Block, must have some ridiculously stiff valve springs for that kind of rpm power...My hats off to that
@jed90210 Actually valve float doesnt occur because the springs arent stiff enough, I mean of course they must have a certain stiffness but valve float occurs because when the engine reaches an rpm that coincidentally equals the spring's own resonance, it will collapse. Strange phenomenon just discovered. So modern high rpm engines has springs that are sought made so that their own resonance is out of the engine's rpm range, by for example giving them a honeycomb shape.
@jed9021~ they may be using Titanium springs. Its also to do with the "resonance" of the spring material. Its not all about seat pressure. Its pretty interesting stuff.
