That must have been a nostalgia concert because they are Airforce personel wearing Army uniforms. Probably celebrating the Army Air Corps of WW 2, great band, wish i could have been in something like that when i was in the USAF.
i think it's hilarious how two of the top rated comments are regarding the drummer...one person calls the drummer hitler and the other is saying that's their dad hahaha
Adrianne, I remember the day you where born July 4th, we had a concert at Wolf Trap. Your Dad may be the finest lead trombonist that ever lived and he played wonderfully on my last CD, "Panorama". This video was recorded around 1988-89. I wish you the very best always, Vaughn
@missraskew: i have very fond memories sitting in on rehersals and attending performances... your dad was always killer on those skins! -_- (my dad's mr. dave steinmeyer )
That indeed IS Rich Haering playing lead and he performed in a wonderful manner during his tenure with the band. I don't understand the confusion as to who's playing lead on this video, as I was ALWAYS better looking, a comment I'm sure Rich will LOVE! The "Airmen of Note" are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year & they remain one of the world's finest jazz orchestras. My time with the band was a Blessing, and will always remain precious and cherished. All the best, VAUGHN NARK
@vaughnnark: hey there! it's dave's daughter, adrianne - i'm really curious to know when this was filmed -
i, too, consider "my time" (ha-ha) with the band a blessing... back then it was just "going to work with dad"; but, now i'm kicking myself in the head for not having more tangible evidence (photos and videos - i still have many LPs) of what i've always considered the most remarkable childhood experiences.
Hi Claude! Steve, sorry but you've got the wrong era of the band - Jimmy Lay and Dave Steimneyer were gone by then. The shining bald head in the trumpet section is Bruce Gates, and that's not Stumpy next to Rick, it's me (Doug Elliott)! Lead trumpet is Rich Haering, and Vaughn is the trumpet player on the end, not playing - I guess the chart was for 3 trumpets.

Sorry to respond to floorgraphix so late but you are absolutely incorrect. I know this because I was the drummer (aka Hitler) in The Airmen of Note from Nov 1983 to June 2004 and we are in fact the band in this vid. The Army Blues along with other DC bands were on these gigs at different times. Anyway, the Blues are a great band as is the Navy Commodores, and the Army Jazz Ambassadors. Keep on Swingin guys!
@saxman42141 no it's actually not it's the doc severinson arrangement that is why doc is the band leader for the song and besides why would doc severinson be featured in a song that was arranged by somebody else it doesn't even make sense
Thanks for the reply, but I asked so long ago that I don't remember why I asked.I knew a Russ Eckert who was in the AF bands too, maybe they were related.
I love this song, everytime i play it i dance while playing, joe garland the original composer is a genius, Doc sounds amazing as usual, and that definately looks like vaughn i know he was in the aon for 20 years, he is just as good as doc, doc is just more famous, obvisously
School's of thought about where the lead trumpet sit's in the section depend upon how many trumpets are in the section. If four, he/she is usually second from the right as you are looking upon the crowd.
When I used to play in various USAF bands, the 2nd trumpet(jazz chair)was next to the rhythm section, and the lead was next to him,,the 3rd and 4th. were on the other side .Example
I will confirm that lead trumpeter in the background is indeed Vaughn Nark. I have been a longtime friend of him for many years, and wouldn't mistake the shot of him at 0:51 and 1:28 in the clip.
Vaughn auditioned right out of high school and has occupied their lead chair for almost twenty years from that point :) Although he is now retired, I make no mistake in tagging him in the background.
Just to let you know, I'm Rich Haering. Vaughn Nark stopped being the lead Trumpet in 1986 when Bruce Gates was hired. In 1989 they hired me and I held the lead chair until 1999. I was playing Lead for this show.
That is actually either Rich Haering or Bruce Gates playing lead trumpet. Couldn't tell on that particular number. Vaughn Nark is the one not playing at the end of the section near the drummer. He must not have had a part on that one.

If this isn't the Airmen of Note, then why are "Stumpy" Dave Steinmeyer
and Rick Lillard sitting in the bone section, and if that isn't Jimmy Lay's
shiny bald head in the trumpet section, then I never played for Gene Donati!
