I swapped Bowie's Man how sold the world to get the IOV album back in the 70s. It was the original Ltd release and is now worth a few £s. Still rather have Jimmie's album!
Can't find any covers of his songs on the tube! Will have to warm up some of my oldies and have a go!
Jimmie was my first concert in the early 80's in Norman ok....at the Boomer theater. Still remember it well. Amazing artist that gives goosebumps...it's so real
Is there anyone else that remembers seeing h at the Armadillo in Austin? I was a kid, it was magical - think I cried a little, and maybe peed myself, when he sang this live
It's great to hear Jimmie's haunting songs again. If you like this sort of heartfelt, slightly ethereal singer/songwriter music, I suggest you check out Holcombe Waller's Into the Dark Unknown album. Waller is a dreamy troubadour in the Spheeris tradition.
I've reached this song (and album) on the back of bands like Midlake citing it as a huge influence. I have to say that as good as "The Trials of Van Occupanther" is - and it is one of my favourite albums of the last 5 years - this song is just sublime and beats it hands down. I really rate a Leeds based band called Fossill Collective that are making beautiful music in a similar style, "On and On" may interest anyone interested in a new band (hopefully) on the rise making a well educated sound.
BGO Records in the UK issued this album and The Original Tap Dancing Kid on a 2 for 1 Cd in 2009. Hopefully they will do The Dragon is Dancing and Ports of the Heart as well sooner rather than later.
I got turned onto JS in the 0's and have several of his albums. No turntable set up now so I've not listened to them in a long time (plus the fact that kids and grandkids absorb my time). Thanks for the post, Syn.
Sherry, hope you get set up with his music soon-I know what it's like to loan out music and not get it back-happened to me with Pure Prarie League!
Happy 61st birthday, Jimmie (November 5 1949 - July 4 1984). Miss ya, love ya, see you again some day. xo - am (online at The Jimmie Spheeris Memorial Gallery).
If it aint free Sherry cant afford it but if its the only way never downloaded anything before but am learning my boss is tryin to help me! Ive downloaded two songs from other but they do not have this have searched a long time for this! Loaned mine and never got it back can see why but now Im left without! Itunes how much does it cost! Thanks Sherbella
You haven't downloaded from itunes before? It's pretty basic.. That's your best bet ...
Convert to MP3 or wav and burn to disc...but if you love the song that much I will say without hesitation that you should definitely get it... the whole album is great. He has a lot of other really good albums, too... but to my ears this one is alone in it's own world . It's the best he did, IMO.... there's nothing else like it anywhere.
@Synthhtnys Thanks for the imput tried to get it once but was stupid and didnt think it was the same album now Im kicking my own ass but still thanks will try to get it and thanks for your input invaluable
@sherbella1 U probably wont unless you go to ebay or amazon and find it. I Bought the CD from rain records just before Sony said, No can do. So I DO have the albumn on cd! My fav of all
I saw that he'd been killed by a drunk driver. Why do the best musicians have to be taken away when they've just begun to blossom? Thank you for this. Another great song is "Let's Get the Show on The Road" by the Michael Stanley Band.
I cherish this album of all the ones that are in my collection (3,000+), there are some many memories woven into the fabic of this music from my college days.
@OSUnTexas U need to be back In OK! LOL Yes Jimmie has held all our hearts for a while. I was luckey enough to get one of the CD's from rain records..... Happened to be Isle Of View. The best ever. Come back to OK!!!! LOL
@OSUnTexas I so agree but I remember it a little differently had it and loaned it and never got it back is there another version that is sung a little different I really like it this way but loved the other way

I've got all his stuff on CD/MP3, but there's nothing like the vinyls my mom gave me. Good taste is hereditary :)

The Dragon Is Dancing is also an excellent recording - every bit as good as Isle of View, IMO. We miss you Jimmie!
