I am actually replacing my automatic front-loading machine with a twin tub. they use less water and are much faster. I had to use a twin tub at a hotel and I was amazed the clothes came out cleaner than using my automatic machine at home!
@mrsotter19 That's what I did. I was only going to tempory to start with until I found out they washed much cleaner, used far less electricity, and quicker. I like the interaction as you have control. I would never use an automatic again. I don't know why people bother with those aside from laziness. The lifespan of an automatic is only about 5yrs now anyway.
when i was little, maybe like 2 or 3, my mom used to have one of these and i remember her using it. but that round rubber topper for the spinning side, our's was white. but exactly like that. although, i thought the washer did circles like a regular washer??? but i could be wrong.
oh yeah, our's was the famous "avocado green" that was so popular back in the 70's.
Excellent machine. Still faster than these new things. And wash better. So much concern about machines. "Using less" they getting to a point they deffo dont wash so well.
I'm getting a twintub as a temporary measure because my automatic has broken. It's one of the new portable models though, although one of the bigger sizes. I heard they wash cleaner than the automatics anyway. In terms of rinsing, it dosen't have the auto rinse but I was wondering about adding conditioner. Is it best to add in the spinner, or empty washer part and do a rinse with conditioner in there, then just spin dry?
My mum used to take her washing out the main tub, into the spinner and then spin the detergent water back into the main tub, when all the water had stopped going into the tub she would then open the spinner and put fabric conditioner over the clothes which she had diluted in a bowl, and that was about it really.
i love your videos of the hoovermatic twintubs it brings back fun memories of helping mom with the laundry, but ours over here in the states never had the faucet that turns torwards the tub to fill it we always had to use a garden hose.
I love Hoover machines I have had in the past a 3060, 3110, 3348, ac166, loads I still have some I have a a3260 a3350 x2, ac272, ac184, SErvis 600, and a Miele 754S,

Anyone who uses one of these things instead of an automatic washing machine is an absolute idiot! You may as well just hand wash everything. You have to stand there and do stuff yourself the whole time anyway.

Oh, wonderful memories of helping Mum on washday, back in the mid 70s! We had a Servis twin tub, but everything was much the same as in your model. How it thrilled my 4 year old self to see it 'dancing' across the kitchen floor! Great days - thanks so much for this post. :)
Great memories , my mum had one at home in dublin , my job was to empty the tub , while she hung out the washing on the line , im living in canada and my wife was amazed by this , thanks for posting
Great video. It's brought back nice memories of my mum's twin tubs as I was growing up. After a Burco boiler, she got a Rolls Concorde, and then years later, a Hoovermatic.
I love these machines and have recently managed to get a 3310E. It's been in for repair, and I should be getting it back tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to say goodbye to the temperamental automatic ; )
I have one too. All the side badging is wore off. It is white with lime green trim. It is a hoover and does not heat water - you must put your own hot or cold into it. You have to add water manually. I dont know what year it is but it washes clothes cleaner that any new machine I have used. It doesnt have the arm that goes between the tubs. Shame you cant buy one of these machines today!!
well it nice to go down memory lane ! but the front loader kill them ! who want to stand there for an hour a week ! I used repair washing machines and the older ladies told me they loved there automatic front loader ! anyday !
A great vintage washer, and I have to comment on the music at the beginning of your video. I'm a big fan of Wizzard and loved hearing 'Eddy's Rock'. Wonderful!
I have recently acquired a 1980s Hoovermatic De Luxe which has the more common vertical axis agitator. The auto-rinse switch is stuck and there is no hose to it so more attention's required (maybe I'll try to sort it sometime).
The Spin tub does that Spin the soap out and rinses the clothes out as well or do you have to drain the main tub and refill with plain water after washing the clothes?
Hi i have a t5090 in my shead, it was bought for me when i bought my first house in 1990, ive used it once, but decided it was time consuming, and bought a automatic, are these washers collectable or are worth more to scrap metal, mine is in perfect condition, but I cannot decide weather to sell or take it to the scrap dealer as its taking too much room up in my shead!!
how much will you accept been looking for one like this for ages. We used to have one in the 1970s. Could you let me know please, mamy thanks and where do you live
tombat73. with all respect to you i see your point - however in 9 mins 55 secs you can do two laods of washing and have it done with! 1 hour iin an auto for one load and not particulaly good either....
remember wash days at home with mum using the same machine as this one. Starting with the whites, mum would work through all the washing using the same water! Dad was a coal miner so the last clothes to go in would be his pit overalls, by this time the wash water would be a petrol blue colour!
My dear Tombat73, you might have just wasted a short time in your small life in watching this film, but think, how much of that said life have you wasted in waiting for your (and I'm sure you have one) slow and inefficient automatic washing machine to undertake just one load - badly?
Where are your wooden tongs for taking the clothes out of the machine LOL.... we had those when I was a kid! Our twintub was different though- it had a big spirally thing in it.
i ama fully trained dry cleaner!!! i know how to use washing machines!!! i dont throw everything in together and try to cram as much in as i can and sin it to a inch of its life and death like women and men do!!!
hoovermatic twin tubs are the best, i would replace my servis auto washer in a shot, tonight i washed work shirts, 5 poly cotton shirts on the shortest wash and its an hour and twenty mins, nothing needs to be in a washer that long! i could do a weeks worth in a hoover in this time and have time to spare....... where can i get one now? i had one years ago and wish i'd never parted with it.
its amazing how many women dont know how to do washing!!!! everything gets thrown in together and six bells knocked ut of it on the spin!! no wounder the world is the way it is today!! i go on each care lnstructions on every garment we own if that means 15 loads so be it!!! whitesits ti are whites darks sep towels ect sheets its time women learn how to do laundry!!!
You always hear about Chef's and their asbestos fingers, this machine is how you get them. Lifting the boiling hot clothes out and into the spinner your hands eventually get used to all that heat :-)
i was hoping to hear the "slurping" noise as the main washer empties at the end as the last dregs were drained out of the machine, but the music drowned it out shame! but nonethe less im so jealous of you - i so want one!
I remember these machines very well. I remember seeing an ad with Jane Curtin of SNL as the spokesperson, of course it was made befoe SNL and shown after the show started to take off. Of course it could have been someone who looked a lot like her, but then again, many future stars got their start in TV commercials. I wonder if anyone could find that commercial and post it.
To crazychrisva, these washers (and matching dryers) were sold in the USA. I have one which I purchased in 1974. They were a popular choice for people who lived in apartments and didn't have hookups for a regular automatic washer.
Does anyone know where belts for these washers can be purchased?
What was the advantage of this over an automatic model. I was just wondering because I have never heard of these in the U.S. I never knew Hoover made anything besides vacuum cleaners.
I don't think it was a question of advantage, more to do with technology of the time. I think these started out in the 50's, my mum had one when I was a kid in the 70's. They seem antiquianted by todays machines, but with less electronics "lifting the bonnett (hood)" was easy for my dad. Similar with cars now
In new zealand the twin tub deluxes have a hose u plug into the top of the spinners lid to rinse! did they have those over there? what year is your model?
Oh, just a little tip, when you return ya suds back to the washer, run the outlet hose towards the washer lid end and tuck the bend over the side of the washer instead of the back, that way you have hands free and you can start putting in the next load and turn the motor on too!
Oh, i remember my dad's ma having this model when i was about 5 (1984) and she had the orange one too with the front latch which i ended up getting and is still going strong at my friends place, would rather have one of these than my T5090, rinsing is much better with the swivel nozel thingy.
Hehehehe, its just like me with my T5090, once a week, 45 mins, all washin done. Cant beat Hoovermatic's, well twin tubs in general (although Hotpoints agi just slaps clothes back and forth and Servis wash tubs arent deep enough for a `rollover'!
ah yes, I can remember the smell and my Mum had one of those wooden spatula things to pick the hot clothes up with and put them into the spinner....! lol
We had one of these, took up half your kitchen, took 3-15 years to fill with water from that useless tap, the thing would pop off the tap with the pressure if more than a dribble was coming through it, the hoses broke because they were brittle, it did have a decent spinner tho, if you wrung out the burning hot clothes before putting them in it mind you! LOL But it did wash better, we ended up having 3 of them! Think the preceeding ones had a huge paddle thing in the middle. What was De Luxe?
Any chance anyone could point me to a replacement belt for the spinner? My Dad has an older model. I think he bought his in the late 60's. Model T1003. Need the spinner 'slip' belt. It's 24" by 1/4" wide. Thanks! Larry
Very cool. I think I remember seeing something similar to this in the Sears catalogs in the 1970's. Maybe Whirlpool made them as well (??) because Sears automatic washers were made by them. Never saw one in action though. Love old washers! Thanks for the video!
Yeah - we had one..!! was great - while u were out side pegging the washing out, it would start spinning on its own and knock the pipe off the sink and pump the water out all over the floor..! they were good machines in their day though.
Thank you. I have been debating whether or not to buy one since my tiny portable one is dying. I am also disabled and squating to pull clothes out of a front loader has me falling over more often than not. I will be getting one. Thanks again.
I used to sell these in the early seventies, and my Nan had an even older one from the early sixties. I used to work in the electrical department at our local Co-op, so these machines are quite familiar. I remember being fascinated craning my neck into the washing tub watching the water disappearing through the grille at the bottom when it pumped out. Happy days!
I want a full-size twintub, at the moment I only have one of those little blue portable ones, it does a good job in cleaning my clothes, but it's just not big enough to do bedsheets and duvet covers. I have my eye on a Hotpoint on eBay at the moment... :)
This was most enjoyable and brought back many memories. Its in very nice condition too!,I grew up with one of these machines, slightly earlier (1971) had the name plate in all metal. It still exists, though out of use since 1993 (by when it needed an overhaul) when my mother bought a new Hotpoint Supermatic (Hoovers by then discontinued) which is now in turn needing frequent repairs. I intend to restore the Hoovermatic, though would not return it to regular use-spares are hard to find.
God almighty! I didn't realise how much quicker it was washing stuff in one of these compared to a fully automatic machine! Does the Hotpoint twintub work in the same way?
Yes, it's pretty fast! It manages 2KG in 15 minutes, and each subsequent wash takes about 11 minutes as you wash one load whilst rinsing/spinning the other. I find its better to do 5 or 6 loads at once, as nowadays we don't wear clothes long enough to get the water really dirty.
The Hotpoint is the same pretty much, but just takes 8 minutes longer on the first wash. To be honest, the Hotpoint is less fuss to use I think, although I'm loathe to admit that!
There's a pressure switch in the outer spin tub. Once the water is at a certain level, it switches on the motor which runs for about a minute. It'll carry on rinsing until you turn the tap off too! it isn't very effective though, tends to leave detergent spots on the washing.
I find it works best if the spinner is no more than 3/4 full and after it has done 2 rinses you rearrange the clothes in the spinner, then do a 3rd rinse followed by the final rinse with conditioner.
Neat video. We had these in the US too. But they were a niche market. Most people had single tub automatics or wringer washers. These Hoovermatics were considered semi-automatics and were less common. Yours is in great shape you've done a good job in fixing it up. And i was surprised how much wash you could get into the main tub and the spinner. Goes to show that one doesn't need fancy equipment to get the laundry done!
Yeah, it doubles as a worktop, remember these machines were around before fitted kitchens were popular, and the formica top stopped the washdeck getting dented or scratched when things were put on top.
The automatic is a modern Servis, but it isn't very exciting (to a retro head like me anyway), apart from when the concrete weight came loose and it sounded like a thunderstorm every time spin kicked in!
I still love watching this video, twin tubs have always fascinated me

Any chance anyone could point me to a replacement belt for the spinner? My Dad has an older model. I think he bought his in the late 60's. Model T1003. Need the spinner 'slip' belt. It's 24" by 1/4" wide. Thanks! Larry

Very cool. I think I remember seeing something similar to this in the Sears catalogs in the 1970's. Maybe Whirlpool made them as well (??) because Sears automatic washers were made by them. Never saw one in action though. Love old washers! Thanks for the video!

Now I know why machines used to be called fully automatic. I never thought you'd had to do this kind of thing before.

Great video:) İ didnt know that these machines had auto rinse:)
candogan62 3 years ago
Only the De Luxe versions did, but it does save a lot of hassle, you can just leave the machine to get on with it while you get on with other stuff!

Thanks again.

don't dress shirts buttons come off ???
novideosaccount 3 years ago
No, I've never had a problem with that, although if there is a rip or tear in your clothes the action of the wash can make the damage larger.

Happy days!

Where on earth do you put them all?
You must have a very understanding family!
I can just about manage 2 Empresses,a Servis Superheat and a Top Loader Automatic Hotpoint!

I want a full-size twintub, at the moment I only have one of those little blue portable ones, it does a good job in cleaning my clothes, but it's just not big enough to do bedsheets and duvet covers. I have my eye on a Hotpoint on eBay at the moment... :)

Hi there
Have to say I enjoyed this video. Brought back memories to me too.

Great video very concise of how to use the machine. I still use my Hoovermatic Deluxe I bought it in 1972.
zeldas67 4 years ago
if there is like a motor that is spinnning it.. won't your shirts get caught in it and then they will just go bluzzz???
novideosaccount 4 years ago
Yeah, it can tangle like mad! Lint isn't a problem so much if you wash like colours together. Just part of the character, and it has lots of that!
lswrsi 4 years ago
This was most enjoyable and brought back many memories. Its in very nice condition too!,I grew up with one of these machines, slightly earlier (1971) had the name plate in all metal. It still exists, though out of use since 1993 (by when it needed an overhaul) when my mother bought a new Hotpoint Supermatic (Hoovers by then discontinued) which is now in turn needing frequent repairs. I intend to restore the Hoovermatic, though would not return it to regular use-spares are hard to find.
simlinc 4 years ago
Actually there are plenty of spares for the Hoovermatic, if you look on Ebay you should find lots.

how do you wash your dress shirts? mine stretch sometimes... and i dunno how to get it to stop...
so I try not to wash my collared shirts too much ...
do you have any that will stretch?
novideosaccount 4 years ago
They will stretch more if you have a full load. If you have the load half full and wash for 2 minutes instead of 4 you shouldn't not have a problem.

Hoovermatics are the best Twin Tub washing machines there Fast & reliable. I still use mine.
zeldas67 4 years ago
God almighty! I didn't realise how much quicker it was washing stuff in one of these compared to a fully automatic machine! Does the Hotpoint twintub work in the same way?
tammyjc15 4 years ago
Yes, it's pretty fast! It manages 2KG in 15 minutes, and each subsequent wash takes about 11 minutes as you wash one load whilst rinsing/spinning the other. I find its better to do 5 or 6 loads at once, as nowadays we don't wear clothes long enough to get the water really dirty.
The Hotpoint is the same pretty much, but just takes 8 minutes longer on the first wash. To be honest, the Hotpoint is less fuss to use I think, although I'm loathe to admit that!
lswrsi 4 years ago
No the hotpoint is slow compared to a hoovermatic twin tub my cousin had a hotpoint twin tub in the 1970`s nothing but trouble.
she bought a Hoovermatic
I still use my Hoovermatic
zeldas67 4 years ago
the best twin tub ever made - the Hoovermatic.
multimill 4 years ago
how does that auto rinse work?
Dokripa 4 years ago
There's a pressure switch in the outer spin tub. Once the water is at a certain level, it switches on the motor which runs for about a minute. It'll carry on rinsing until you turn the tap off too! it isn't very effective though, tends to leave detergent spots on the washing.
lswrsi 4 years ago
I find it works best if the spinner is no more than 3/4 full and after it has done 2 rinses you rearrange the clothes in the spinner, then do a 3rd rinse followed by the final rinse with conditioner.
countkostaki 4 years ago
Goes to show that one doesn't need fancy equipment to get the laundry done!

thats cool you can use it as a table when not in use lol.
whats the other front loader machine? can u get some videos of that too?
Shakiralover4ever 4 years ago
Yeah, it doubles as a worktop, remember these machines were around before fitted kitchens were popular, and the formica top stopped the washdeck getting dented or scratched when things were put on top.
The automatic is a modern Servis, but it isn't very exciting (to a retro head like me anyway), apart from when the concrete weight came loose and it sounded like a thunderstorm every time spin kicked in!
