There is a non-profit organisation called the "United College Negro Fund" whose specific mission is to fund tuition to attend PRIVATE African-American colleges. It is quite obvious that Reagan was referring directly to this organisation but fumbled with the name. It is, simply, outrageous that Maddow is projecting some sort of nefarious racist undertone to Reagan's response. Reagan didn't name the organisation; Blacks did (indeed, the organisation exists today still with the same name).
And they wonder why the GOP can't win the black vote. You would think they would be more respectful to the first black president. Black people who vote for Obama didn't expect the right to bow and kiss his feet, they thought they'd work with him in getting problems solved. A old white lady told me she feared an Obama win because she believed the Republicans would not dare work with him and would despise everything he did.
Reagan was born in 1911 and raised in an era when it was an every day occurrence for a man to beat his wife. So, in keeping with the "logic" of a lot of users here, it would have been perfectly acceptable for Reagan, and other people from his day, to beat their wives; after all, he was "...from a different time." This was 1988, any white person, then and now, using that word would rightfully be called a racist pig.
Wait so its bad if the President says Negro but its not bad when there is a "United Negro College fund'? What about when the Democratic Majority leader said Nigger on the radio? Why dont you report that? Liberals are so stupid, and thats why MSNBS's polls so low!
Reagen was born in a different time. He didn't mean anything by that. Its funny how MSNBC is diggin deep into the past to try and discredit a conservative icon. Maybe MSNBC should try and figure out why their poll numbers suck haha
Reagan didn't have a good relationship with the black community. He received 14% of the black vote in 1980, but received 9% in 1984. Reagan built his coalition based on fear of a powerful government, a government interfering with state/local issues. However, that BIG government played a major role in bringing blacks into full economic, social, and political citizenship in the U.S. Reagan ran against which appealed to racial fears of white Southerners and ethnic whites in the Midwest/North.
When he used the term Negro.People have to know that he was from a different generation. The term Negro was just being polite from the Archy Bunker era.Hey he ment well. The question the young girl asked was stupid.Basically what are you going to do for me mr. big govt.Do for your self and quit acting like a slave.Begging from mr. big govt.s table.
Acting like a slave? Slaves took care of themselves, they took care of their master when they were sick, they made sure their master's property wasn't threatened. I understood what Reagan meant. The premise of this show was ask why are conservatives outraged at the President giving a speech to school children? Also, It is no doubt that conservatives and Republicans have a difficult time appealing to blacks. It is a shame to suggest that blacks want handouts as a reason for voting Democratic.
@Mr40acresandamule Slaves didn't take care of themselves thats why they were someones property. The master took care of them, making sure that they were fed, clothed and housed.Slaves did what the master instructed them to do.Like keep watch over the property, make sure other slaves were working hard hence the word "cracker" was someone whether black or white cracked the whip. The Republican party doesn't have a hard time relating to blacks. They just have a hard time relating to the middle class.
@cozella I'm NOT a cracker, dude. I'm as black as the late Bernie Mac. How can you get mad at the term negro then call me a cracker when you thought I was white lol. Hypocrite.

Rachel Maddow's asshole is "Negroe". Martin Luther King also used the word "Negroe" and he didn't use it to point out the white folk like OBAMA does. And it appears that Rachel loves black "men"... Profoundly.
what the fuck is this dude talking about. if you look at a black man these days it's considered racist. the race card no longer applies to decent americans of any race. You can find better things to do than go 20 years back into the reagan vault and find a video clip that has nothing to do with racism.
As much of a Democrat I am, you can't say that's racist. I got to be honest. One of my friend's grandparents, who was also a staunch Democrat, once used that term as well. It was a common term for African Americans for many years. Even WEB Dubois used it. I perfer Clinton to Reagan anyday. Clinton accomplished what Reagan and Carter did not, and that's giving us a budget surplus.
The Term NERGO is not an offensive term, it is a term refering to skin color. Grow up you uneducated fools. Honestly it is time to for the left to stop spreading lies by only using parts of our statements. Honestly. Quit Misqouting us really its so rediculous.
On should remember Reagan was suffering from alzheimer's when he made that statement. He had also lived through time when black people wanted to be called colored, Negro, black and then African Americans. I sense that Reagan was never comfortable using the term "blacks" as in the girls question. I prefer to use black as an adjective rather then a noun. I think If you want to beat up on Reagan you can find far worse quotes than this.

To call Regan a racist based on his use of the word negro is placing modern ideas of race to an older culture. Back than, negro was a common term to describe a dark skinned individual of African decent. Blacks used it, whites used it. It was only because the south's pronunciation of negro sounded to close to nigger that the social change took place.
Reagan was a racist, but he was also an idiot. Racists are idiots anyway for believing that somehow their group is better than some other group. It's sad that some people try to use him and his policies as a standard. He basically slept, gave speeches that he did not write or know the content of, and let others do his job.

sweetnskippy - the word "negro" in the 1950's was a term that was showed respect, hence the united negro college fund. By 1980 it was used as a derogatory term. Reagan wasn't talking about the college fund. He was talking about historically black colleges. He was saying that his administration supported black students by supporting historically black colleges. Except he called them negro colleges. Because he was out of touch.
How did a word go from "respect" to derogatory in less then a generation? If the "negro" in the United Negro College fund was respectful in the 1950s, why is it still respectful today? Rachel Maddow are you really that stupid? "Negro" used to be an acceptable term for black people! Have you ever heard of the "United Negro College Fund"? What has happened since 1988 should upset you more. What I mean is the effort to make our language politically correct, and therefore actually incorrect. "African American" for example. Unless you were born in Africa, you're not an African! Your attempt to make Reagan out to be racist failed. To bad your 10 viewers are that dumb.
sweetnskippy, are you really that stupid? long before 1988 the word "negro" had fallen out of favor. there are other reasons to show this clip, though, one being showing how condescending Reagan was to, not just ethnic minorities, but all Americans. hell, he might as well have just screamed at the kid, "Geez, what are you talkin' about, I've done a lot for you people!" He really did think he was royal. He was a fascist.
So apparently you support stupid politically correct terminology? Funny, but that makes you the stupid one. Your impression of Reagan is your own, however to take offense to a word which in itself is not derogatory is why the English language is becoming the hypenated mess that it is.
The term "politically correct" was one made up by the right-wing when they realized in the 70s that our citizenry was starting to engage in a civil and tactful public discussion on matters such as ethnicity. Conservatives can't have that - people talking civil to each other? How terrible! So they created the term "politically correct" in order to ridicule how tactful people were learning to be.
Mussolini defined fascism when he said; "Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power. " Whenever corporate power becomes involved in government, that's fascism. Not only did Reagan tell corporations that they could do whatever the hell they wanted to, he also started the trend toward "privatization" of public government functions. Whenever you see the word privatization, think fascism.
The privatization trend continued from Reagan through Bush 1, even through the fake liberal Clinton years when Bush 2 took over and put it on steroids, even trying to privatize social security.
Hopefully the Obama admin can come up with some legislation to outlaw privatization and squash the fascist bug.
"I hope that we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country."
I'm an African-American, and I have NO problem with that term, in fact I love it! And yeah, "negro" USED to be term an acceptable term for black people--the operative word here is USED to be---it no longer is. And all being so-called politically correct is is being respectful of people and their different views and cultures---what the hell is wrong with that? There's nothing wrong about it---you and other white folks are just pissed off because WE are telling you what to call us
You can call yourself whatever you'd like, I'd call you presumptuous and misguided for thinking I am some pissed off "white folk". I'm not pissed, nor am I white (and what I am is irrelevant). You mix up respect and culture with the stupefying of the English language. When you group Americans into groups like African Americans, Latinos, this and that etc. you're only dividing them into sub groups. Respect for ones culture is good. What is wrong with acknowledging race? What are you afraid of?
There is a non-profit organisation called the "United College Negro Fund" whose specific mission is to fund tuition to attend PRIVATE African-American colleges. It is quite obvious that Reagan was referring directly to this organisation but fumbled with the name. Clearly, Reagan was starting to suffer the effects of at the very least mild cognitive impairment, if not the begining stages of dementia.
His answer was scattered at best. If he had been more with it, he would have answered better.
