ok anyone that wants to rag on these guys can frankly shut up right now I am the son of the man that drowned you wanna rag on him shut up keep it to yourself. My father is more certified in Scuba Diving than I'm sure any of you that posted on this the fact of the matter is Technology has advanced since then this was taken when he was still not very experienced with Ice Diving and frankly how dare you rag on someone that does this voluntarily for Search and Rescue and did for Fifteen Years
That's why SECONDARY regulators were invented...In my dive class, we practiced sharing air with diving partners where we can both breathe from the same tank.
While ice diving is not on my list of things to do anytime soon I know for many divers it's not about being a spectator but more about being an explorer.
@liyaland It is like exploring, because it's something very few people ever get to see. IMHO It's beautiful under the ice, but cave diving is more beautiful if you're gonna do risky diving. People jump out of perfectly good airplanes, too.
i cant believe i actually found this video on you tube the guy feeding the rope is my father dan kurek and i am one of the kids on the hill i was actually at that dive i will tell you rescue 911 did such a hack job of the story
I have about a 100 ice dive its one of the most fun and interesting dive certifications methods and gear have improved since then its is still risky but so worth the risk
This seems irresponsible to me. They were overconfident. If they're a water rescue team, they should have known better than to go out without checking that everything would work. I mean the equipment and a plan for emergencies failing? The ppl on the surface didn't even know the guys were in trouble! Three tugs on the rope? Did they even do that? The ppl up there would have just kept feeding the rope while the two guys drowned.
@rainrozery Its more like stupidity, not overconfidence. Ice Diving, like Cave Diving is extremely dangerous, without proper training and proper equipment. Case in point, any Ice Diver will tell you, you NEVER ice dive with a single tank of air, cause the risk of failure is too great. On top of that, you have to use special regulators where they won't freeze up and block your air flow. Which was pointed out at the end of this segment.
@rainrozery Umm sir it is my dad in that video yes he made a mistake as for you being an asshole and making this comment uncalled for if you were in front of me I would deck you I almost lost my dad on that day and you call him irresponsible and overconfident. My father certified me and I check and re-check every piece of equipment I have before every dive I make.
I don't understand the appeal of ice diving. In my mind, the whole enjoyment of scuba or snorkeling is to see things like coral, fish, stuff like that. All they can see is water and ice... I don't see why that would be considered enjoyable.
@srubi74 Well if you happen to live in a country that has winter with very cold temperatures, and you like diving, it is a common thing. Good tech-equipment, dry suit, heavy undersuit and big balls are needed.
Diving is interesting also without corals or that stuff. And there are loads of ship wrecks in any sea or ocean.

- How much extra air? Always use doubles for all overhead environment.
- Special Ice-dive regulators?
- Long octo reg lines for air share?
