  • Thank you!!! Whrerever you are, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

  • life is a challenge. nic drake makes it clear

  • Listen to this song till the day is done...

  • ELLIOTT SMITH IS SO MUCH BETTER...

  • @LandinBenkowski I looked up elliot smith and I disagree, elliot is not at all unpleasant but honestly it just doesn't work for me on the same level as Drake. The only similarity worth noting is that they were both tortured souls. Drake used a reel to reel tape recorder and his guitar and was occasionally backed by real people playing instruments. Elliot used digital mixing etc and on his best day on earth could never play the guitar like Drake.

  • @wahdubi COULDNT AGREE MORE :)

  • 74 dislike this. But i can guarantee that not one of them could write a song as good as Nick Drake, hes a musician who makes you are glad your alone listening to his music, as the music GRABS you

  • to anyone who disliked this: I dare you to write a song half as good as it!

  • birds flying high you know i feel..

  • With the tragic flow come the greatness.ironic existence...

  • When the day is done Down to earth then sinks the sun Along with everything that was lost and won When the day is done When the day is done Hope so much your race will be all run Then you find you jumped the gun Have to go back where you began When the day is done. When the night is cold Some get by but some get old Just to show life's not made of gold When the night is cold When the bird has flown Got no-one to call your own Got no place to call your home When the bird has flown
  • When the game's been fought You speed the ball across the court Lost much sooner than you would have thought Now the game's been fought. When the party's through Seems so very sad for you Didn't do the things you meant to do Now there's no time to start anew Now the party's through. When the day is done Down to earth then sinks the sun Along with everything that was lost and won When the day is done.
  • "Lost much sooner than you would have thought" ): Oh the irony.

  • Jim Morrison didn't die, he just became Nick Drake :) To Nick Drake a real artist

  • @esymethra Umm, why Jim Morrison? O.o! Jim was alive when this song was recorded and their deaths were inbetween 3 years of eachother!

  • @ShineOnCrazyDiamond1

you got me there shine on, but i do like Nick Drake

Would you have known without wikipedia?:) I wonder

he does look like jim morrison though doesn't he?

  • @esymethra Known about their deaths? In a way yes, in a way no. They both had curley long hair, one stern one sad. Both fantastic!

  • @ShineOnCrazyDiamond1

I think they could of covered each other and no one would have known the difference

Nick Drake sounds more elegant with all the classical guitar and strings in the background, but if you gave him a drummer, a lead guitarist and some madman on keyboards he would be The Doors. The only missing part is the fact I have never heard Nick Drake scream or yell, he looks like a wounded deer, not to be insulting, he just looks wounded like Leonard Cohen.

  • Such a powerful song. Makes me scream and makes me sad at the same time. It just hits me directly. I cry on this. Unbelievable, greetings from Croatia.

  • he's unbelievable... one of my favorite songs... love it...!

  • so he's main page of wikipedia during the black out

    wow

  • i can't understand what he's saying, what language is that? french or somethin?

  • @danielwuhsin english.

  • @snausagesrgood Haha. That dude failed.

  • @danielwuhsin - get better speakers

  • @danielwuhsin english (from UK)

  • he is wonderful

  • i'm here cos of wikipedia

  • @SchutzeAmon me too.

  • @SchutzeAmon me 3!

  • @SchutzeAmon me as well....had forgottenn how much I love his music...

  • I will never understand why people label Nick Drake as 'depressing' because of how his life ended. Listen to Bryter Later now and its like a summers day :)

  • I hate that people get upset comparing Nick Drake to Elliott Smith. They were both brilliant and they would probably be disgusted by people who don't appreciate what each did. They would have appreciated each other's music. Think about it.

  • nessuna parola da proferire.

  • I can't listen to this song... I can feel his emotions this song and it makes me very sad. I wish he hadn't died so early, he would have made it really big.

  • Please don't compare ND to that mediocre Elliott Smith

  • I can't believe I haven't heard about him before especially considering I am really into music from this era. I guess it just shows how clearly underrated he is.

  • this is something specials i love this and hey im just a new artist and its so hard now adays to get some attention so i try it here. maybe i fail maybe not but i hope you guys can help me because its my really last chance to live my life

  • GENIO!

  • Just beautiful ;)

  • The main reason I write songs is because of the influence of Nick Drake. He was such a wonderful songwriter and though I could never be as brilliant as him I will always be trying. The old saying that "only the good die young", as never been so true when it is applied to Nick.

  • This is such increadible music; "Lost much sooner than we would have thought"- Sadly fitting ): . Will one day get a first press of Five Leaves Left. R.I.P to the greatest folk musician to grace the UK/

  • I love 3/4 of the way through the video there are pictures of him from childhood through adulthood. Haunting, beautiful, moving...

  • The intro always reminds me of Time In A Bottle from Jim Croce. RIP to 2 greats.

  • such a calming voice... I always listen this song before I go to sleep, when the day is done...

    Thank you Nick!

  • a timeless classic

  • i went to his school

  • Wow!

  • Dear You Tube, Why won't this $^%&*!% song start playing? Who's asleep at the switch? You have 40% of the content on the entire internet and you can't start a video. I am selling my stock.

  • @houstonveer Its more likely your internet provider or your computer. Works fine for me! I'll take your stock, thanks!

  • beautiful...x

  • He's a genius, pure genius It's to overwhelming, no other way to phrase it, simply brilliant. The world doesn't know what they lost.

  • Just finished listening to this and I'm off to bed. The day is indeed done, and this was the perfect song to end it. :)

  • Nick Drake is one of the lost greats. He should be put up near the top of the singer/songwriter lists. His use of obscure chords and amazing melodies is unparalleled. R.I.P Nick. You are missed by many

  • why do i feel like there aren't many musicians left who are full of sentiment, loneliness and an intimate honest feel to them???? you guys listening to this should check out this album, something tells me you'd connect with it..... indie singer/songwriter Renee Goust: youtube[DOT]com/playlist?list= PL6D8C834C2494A3C

  • This song is brilliant! Though ALL of his songs are. I wish more people knew of his wonderful songs. Thank god some people still believe in true music. Nick, your music will always have a special place in my heart.

  • fuck! with all respect to Elliott, he doesn't even come close to Drake X_X

  • can somebody explain the video to me?

  • @magicmc23 i wish i could help you, sir.

  • @FederRiedelBikes fuck lol

  • A pink moon hangs in a northern sky, a fruit tree grows down by the river, man. The black eyed dog belongs to a man in a shed. Thumbed a free ride from the rider on the wheel. Three hours on the road, ended up in Mayfair. Saw Joey and Hazey Jane too. What a place to be, in the thoughts of Mary Jane. At the chime of a city clock time has told me the way to blue. Was hanging on a star until up came the saturday sun. Which will? you ask,in the time of no reply.Fly from the morning til day is done.

  • @mistomen fuck you asshole you like led zeppelin but i dont!!!

  • @mistomen best comment ever

  • this is.. beautiful..

  • see nick drake and francoise hardy!

  • Movies have made him popular because of his soundtracks. He was truly a great artist.

  • he was a great songwriter.

  • SO HAUNTING.I JUST LOVE TO LISTEN TO HIS VOICE.

  • Great song

  • Not to sound depressive or anything... but oh how true these lyrics are :(

  • this day is done

  • just a thought

  • Does "Five Leaves Left" refer to the end of autumn and the beginning of winter (and the cold, deep depression that comes with)?

  • @jayhawksam no it's a reference to the packages of rolling paper of the brand rizla that had a warning in them that there were only "five leaves left"

  • @bartpan13 tomatoe/tomatuh? No doubt the guy smoked a few j's, but nature also took precedent in his songs. Nature>seasons>cycles : weed>drug>cycles

  • If you like nick check out Sufjan Stevens

  • if you like nick check out Elliott smith and Jeff buckley!

  • I will never never get tired of this song... play it over and over again!!

  • You can catch him, just before the sun goes down in those last soothing seconds of perfect light.

  • Great.. Now I have to look for cvijetics' comment!! o.O

  • i love this song, i think more people need to look at music the way they should look at people. who cares what color people are or what the artist has done in his or her past, its what they created, what they have to say or sing that matters.

  • Fuck you all. A beautiful composition by a long dead, timeless artist, and you children are squabbling over idiotic semantics. You are the reason he never fit in.

  • me sentía tan fuerte, pero en el fondo era tan débil, quizás deba volver a soñar.

  • Heath Ledger! Like if you know what I'm talking about!

  • 67 people are without a soul

  • love

  • I don't know hom much energy and time ppl spend criticizing other people's tastes, even in the comments of this song. I can't believe that people are able to write such poor comments while listening to this song that breaks my heart and bones and takes me lower than any despair on earth.

  • If you like Nick check out Elliott, Bright Eyes, and Alexi Murdoch!

  • this is absolutely unreal

  • John Martyns "London Conversation" album is worth checking out if you like this. Came out the same year as Five Leaves Left if I'm not mistaken. :)

  • Death is always a good career move.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summers end. they write beautiful english folk music which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • Nick's music is transcendent. I owe so much to him. His music spoke to me and gave me comfort at a time when nothing else could. It breaks my heart that he never understood how perfect his music was and never lived to see what a massive impact it would have on peoples lives. He was a beautiful soul and I hope he found peace.

  • @CanAlexFly I totally agree.

  • This music is timeless. It could be released today and still remain totally relevant.

  • Apparently all Nick ever wanted was to reach out to people and touch them with his music. Lack of recognition for the beautiful music he made was part of what threw him into a deep depression. If only he'd known that decades later, one of his songs would go on to be viewed over 2 million times... I hope he's at peace now, wherever he may be.

  • I click on this by accident. I'll never regret it.

  • simple and ideal

    fantastic

  • I close my eyes when I hear this and shivers run through my whole body.

  • Has anybody else had the experience that the first few times hearing nick drake, he didn't make a very strong impression? But he grew so strongly on me, as time went by, and I now invariably state him as my favorite musician. It's hard to pin-point his magic. Ah I'm so happy I know his music, he's the first musician I tell people to check out when we're talking about music.

  • @antizac At first i was recommended him because i adore elliott smith and i just couldnt get into it, but as you said it grew on me and now hes one of my top 5

  • @antizac Same here. Had an English professor in college that had mentioned "Pink Moon" once and was curious. Wasn't originally impressed, but later on found myself listening again. Next thing I knew I had purchased a lot of his tunes. :P

  • @antizac i had the same experience with Elliott Smith

  • @antizac Exactly! Truly Artist! Beside Tim Buckley, my favorite

  • cant we just enjoy music for the music instead of acting like some critic... life is judgemental as it is.. shut the fock up and enjoy whatever it is u enjoy.. elliot was great until he took his life and drake is great as well.. and so is many others..

  • Enough comparisons between Nick Drake and Elliot Smith. I'm sure everyone is passionate about one, the other or both. But they aren't the same.

And for all the people on a roll about comments regarding how talentless music is, I've managed to build an entire dubstep track in about 20 minutes.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summers end. they write beautiful folk which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • Im trying to compose music like this, but damn, it is incredibly hard. Nick is a genious, but I will never lost the hope of write some good music like he did.

  • I agree in that Nick is talented! but you need talent to be a good rapper too! not that shitty lil wayne. stop saying that all other music is shit and not talent bla bla bla.. Im sure that you cant make a good techno song or rap at all..

  • @sessionglobe I agree with you. Good rap definitely takes talent. I think that most people who hate rap only hate it because all of the rap they hear is this mainstream garbage about rims, whores, and bling. Stuff that is hard to relate to and lacks emotion and depth. If you look at some of the early rap songs, they really touched on issues that mattered to people. As rap became more commercial, the airwaves became saturated with shitty songs that have given rap a bad rap.

  • if you like nick check out Elliott smith

  • @samesamething uhhh.... no thanks

  • @samesamething

Elliott Smith was indeed a special person, my fave musician of all time

  • @samesamething I LOVE Elliott Smith, now I'm checking out Nick

  • @samesamething

    Isn't Elliott Smith dead aswell?

  • @brightlights456X Sadly yes. But that doesn't mean his music is dead.

  • @iamnotascientisi

    Fair point.

  • @samesamething

Elliott Smith is our generation's Nick Drake

  • @Bodmw01 even though Elliott has passed now too, I agree

  • @Bodmw01

    totally agree

  • comparing these two people is like comparing apples and oranges. and don't presume that any performer defines a generation. artists make their art in their own way regardless of the time or age.

  • @Bodmw01 It's too bad he's dead now. Oh well, maybe another will come within the next few decades.

  • @Bodmw01 he's dead.

  • @Bodmw01 elliot smith is nothing in comparison to nick drake.

  • @bluesfolkman cant deny his talent though!!!

  • @bluesfolkman I love both Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. They're both distinguished individuals who've expressed different things. No use in saying one's better than the other.

  • @Bodmw01 yes!

  • @Bodmw01 Elliott Smith is dead?

  • Shhhh.... You got your friends to like your comment... Dickface McGrady? Was that his name, couldn't hold a candle to Nick.

  • if you like nick check out Elliott smith

  • Nick Drake fans, would you take a few minutes to go to reverb nation dott comm slash Garcon Rouge (sorry, have to write that way to post it), listen to a few tracks, and then message me what you think. I've never put up any music before and want to get some objective opinions of people that don't know me but at least listen to similar music. It's all rough but I need some feedback. there's even a Nick Drake cover of "know". thanks.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summers end. they write beautiful folk which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • was nick drake self taught

  • @PuffSmelly Yep, but his mother was also a musician that played the piano. I also think that Nick Drake was heavily influenced by Jackson C. Frank's 1965 album, because Nick Drake did several covers from that album in his Family Tree album.

  • if you like this you'd love tha carter 3 by lil wayne. wayne is kind of the nick drake of this century. sounds trolling if you only know two songs by lil wayne like most people who hate on him, but its true

  • @sansdeity420 I can't agree at all m8. Lil Wayne is very overrated and too mainstream to even be compared to Nick Drake. A lot of people say Alexi Murdoch is this generations Nick Drake, but they are different in many ways.

  • "Whaddayall crackaz know bout music anyways?" Lol, Bach laughs at such.
