I thought the staff represented authority (like every where else in the Bible) and that God was saying that it was not by Moses' authority but He was saving Israel by His own authority.
@craigntammy: I think you're right, only more broadly than Os is saying here. Perhaps our vocations & work can be seen as the arenas where we can exercise dominion, or authority. God wants His kingdom to come (= His rule & reign) but in practice, this demands that we live our lives in submission to His will & ways by His Word & Spirit. So I guess that laying our callings down is to lay our authority down to see His kingdom extended here on earth.
