This song brings back my early childhood when my Mom and Dad would sing it to me back in the forties. We used to do what's called "harmonizing"; we sang together and they taught me the lyrics. It was a special, haunting song then and still is for me today. I feel that my parents are still at my side when I hear it, though they are both now deceased. Wistful, sad and gut-wrenching music. The Gershwins had "soul" to have composed this song. Billie Holiday captured its true essence!
my first real relationship was because of Billie Holiday. Met her in the library at a local college. she said she needed help finding help on Billie Holiday for her report.
It is a bittersweet song. Made especially so by a woman who got more than she could ever have expected. It was the life she fought to have and it ultimately killed her. That's were the soul comes from. Then again I'm just a white girl from Louisiana. What do I know? And, yes, I do understand the sarcasm of the song. It's hard down here, as I'm sure you all think it's hard everywhere.
@boyscoutonacid I love Ella too. Both woman will always be legends. I just love Billie's version more :) The horns just do something to my soul. And the way she hits certain notes just give me quivers. But I can appreciate both versions :)
@APRILRENAY1 LOL. I've never heard someone say that to a dead person that's why I was suprised. I'm like...I think u're a few decades late. LMBO. Have a blessed day.

Such a beautiful talented women, what a tragedy to die at such a young age. "If there's a rock and roll heaven, you know they got one hell of a band"

As much as Billie's my favourite, I gotta go Ella Fitzgerald on this one. Her version with Satchmo is legend.

Don't get me wrong, I love both versions, but Ella's more eery. And Satchmo's horn is just dirty as hell. I love it!
