@DrIvoRobotnick I'm still learning about what happened but it seems like the people who began AIM and who started the occupation were making a statement, not so much "f u" the government, but to promote awareness and pride in all Native cultures. And to bring the tribes closer together. Bad things did happen on the island, and they will no matter where you live or who you are but the main point was believed to be recognized. They had a lot of support from people of many different backgrounds.:)
For all the extremely ignorant people posting on this page I would suggest you pull yourself away from your latest installment of American Idol or whatever other crap you watch and sit down and watch the documentary film Alcatraz Is Not An Island so you can begin to erase the decades of brainwashing that you endured through American public school system in regards to the true history of this country.
The whole thing was a sad mess. They went out there and vandalized a bunch of historical buildings (including the infamous burning down of the wardens house) and somebody actually fell and died during the occupation.
lindeyis407...natives just want a piece of free land to live like their ancestors, free and natural, hand in hand with mother nature just like its intended.....and the taking of their land, the worst tragedy ever, has brought their decrease in population which is leading to emotional damage...and I mean who wouldnt be depressed because your race is disappearing...
obviously you don't know the story. It was about native americans trying to better their situations for their people, Richard Oakes began the occupation to start negotiations with the gov't to better conditions for Native Americans- the most disadvantaged minority in the US. It is not fair..what native people have suffered and how they are still treated today. They had a right to claim this land under the Ft.Laramie treaty, but US still denied them- another broken treaty! Big surprise!
Dont let idiots bother you. What you have done is wonderful dont let stupid people stop you from doing good work

Some doucuments make it seem like AIM movents were mostly infighting and were not much more than a big F U to the government.
The other side say that the world was changed for the better.
I don't know what accually happened can anybody give me a straight answer, becides the damn propaganda on both sides?

American Indians on Alcatraz gave their lives for their freedom, what have you done for yours? Nothing! That's what I thought. You disgust me.

Isn't it ironic that Native American children came from across the country to take over a prison in order to proclaim their freedom?

what did the indian occupation achieve? The answer is nothing at all but destrucition to some historic buildings on the island and graffiti all over
