The way I see it is that the smaller the playing arena (Rugby League, NFL) then the more tackles are going to happen. There is less room and more traffic/congestion. However the speed at which a bigger playing arena allows can cause some of the most sickening collisions from AFL you'll ever see, primarily because-no pads or helmets and the play does not follow one direction. One player heads toward the other unknowingly and BOOM. Respect to Rugby League and AFL...no pads, no helmets. Simple.

Our tackles are high because you are taught to 'wrap up the ball' by wrapping up their arms when you tackle a player, so they can't get a hand pass away with their free hands. So they will get pinged for holding the ball, which gives you a free kick

I play both rugby and afl competitively and rugby and afl have both very different methods and reasoning behind tackles.

If you want some big things that afl players do, i suggest you look up the 'biggest hits'

Yes, NRL hits are harder, but the difference is in the NRL you know where the hits are going to come from - you run right into them and they always come from the front! AFL you've got not clue where the hit will come from....

Also, its those 'soft' rules that make AFL tackling more skillful - you must tackle correctly or you'll give away a free kick.

afl is easily the most attended sport in the country. im from sydney and i know for a fact NRL generally attracts about 80,000 a week. an average of around 10,000 a match. which is rubbish compared to AFLs 300,000-350,000 average a week. and these figures dont matter as AFL is by far the superior sport.
