  • 70ts were the best 4northern soul look at most of the rubbish thats played pptday it would.nt be put on a turn table

  • One of my all time favorite northern songs, what a blast from the past, loved going out dancing all night, and at the time it WAS about the music and the dancing, not getting as drunk as you could as quick as you could like it is now x

  • Wow : I see myself in the back Ground white short sleeved shirt and Grey Flairs on' I was in the Army at the time Stationed in Germany. but was mad on Northern soul, I'm from derby But spent most of my Leave at the Casino or Twisted Wheel...

  • So people up North were dancing and clubbing to Soul, what were people down south doing then?

  • AH!!! That's where Marc Almond got it from!!

  • @clearviewmind He sure did, Marc was a Wigan Casino regular and Soft Cell once described that they wanted to make music that sound like northern Soul and Kraftwerk. He certainly retained the emotional vocal :)

  • Who is or was Paul G from Carlisle. I think I might know him.

  • Brilliant video, great song, brings back so many great memories, thanks for posting.

  • Snookybaz1- you may not be able to dance like that now flower but at least you'll have some fantastic memories. I would've given my left tit to have been around then. And probably my right one as well!

  • The howard wolowitz hair styles.

  • OH WHAT MEMORIES, peterborough,st.ives, cleethorpes, liecester, and many more.the miles we used to clock up travelling to different all-nighters around the country, and the friends we made.not to be repeated sadly.

  • Absolute Classic...................xxxxxx

  • this is great...everyones dancing normal then suddenly someone spazzis out..is this a strickly northern thing, and what time period is this?

  • @davezz5

    poss 1975 ish

  • Class Song !

  • The first guy in video is Andy Hicken a friend from Cirencester, now living in bristol,i am the 4th dancer and i wish i could move like that now...

    snooky

  • @snookybaz1

Wait you are the 4th person with the white shirt who did the sort of high kick? Are you serious? If you are, then let me say this. Apart from the song, you are the 2nd reason why I added this video to favourite. Best move of the whole video! I tried it and ended up in hospital. All my mates loved the move especially the ladies! You don't understand how popular you are hahaha!

  • @teewoods

yes it is me in the clip doing kick in the air,i was about 15 when i was going to wigan allnighters....mind you i can not do it now...i'm 50 years old now

i am from the south of engalnd,i used to live in gloucestershire and travel up NORTH to all the best clubs, untill an allnighter opened in Yate.

dancing and collecting records were the past time...

  • @snookybaz1

Mate that was awesome. The thing is people don't club any more in the uk. My clubbing years were the early 90's. I left the country about 10yrs ago and came for a visit and I have to say all people did was either get really drunk or take pictures of how cool they look so they can post them on Facebook. You should still go to the all nighters like many still do. Seems like you lost the faith. :o)

i'm no spring chicken either it hurts realising the body just cant do what it used to.

  • Like this as much as the more modern stuff like the novellos mate

  • Its all good,glad I was a kid in these times...no racism,just out for a good time...miss these times...what a track! Cool post Sam !!

  • Thanks for the share Lynda x

  • I remember the northern soul record stall right by the punk stall in the underground market in manchester. Used to be into my punk but loved watching the dancers down there and still loved the music ha ha danced to it all, loved ska and reggae too....so much good music right then

  • just look at the new shuffling moves, see a similarity? :) Crossley House Youth Club, where I remember this from

  • just look at the new shuffling moves, see a similarity? :)

  • Hang on a minute didnt we start hip hop from Wigan? That geezer was doing hip hop moves? PC

  • Hang on a minute didnt we start hip hop from Wigan? That geezer was doing hip hop moves? P{C

  • would that be Paul G of Norfolk?

  • @Britcenturion No fella, Paul G of Carlisle !

  • remember goin to butlins pwhelli in the 70s and the disco was full of n/soul dancers unfortunatetly we were punks and hoolys sorry folks ,but i knew it was great just with the wrong crowd

  • reminds me of the days when me and Guy Henigan used to go to Wigan those days we lived in Skipton

  • reminds me of the days when I used to go to Wigan with my friend guy Henigan wheI i lived in skipton north yks

  • Love this song. Floor filler every time. Reminds me off torch.Judy Street . "What " a classic

  • KEEP THE FAITH!!!

  • I'm in love with the girl at 1.39!!

  • Thanks for that...I can't resist looking in on the Northern Soul sounds, nothing like those times!

  • thanks! so is Judy St the artist?

  • @oldtintoys Yeah, Judy Street is the artist and the song is entitled "What"

  • @oldtintoys She is,she was cooooool!

  • excuse my ignorance but why is this called 'judy street what'???

  • @oldtintoys Because thats the artist and title of the song.

  • so cool but soooo camp. The road to acid house.

  • it started a couple of years befor dave godins column in blues and soul and came about becuz of the fact that djs in the north of england were spinning more soul tunes than the rest of the country and eventualy got the tag northern soul, but its all soul music . check out the northern soul story on youtube tells everything you need to know bout it. keep the faith, and keep dancing guys n girls

  • fantastic memories from my northern soul days xx

  • just love it

  • to add to that i believe northern soul was 1st in print in Dave Godin's column in BluesandSoul in 1970/71 but wen did u punters start callin it that? On the things I know about ie jazz-funk in early80s it neva really had 1 all-encompassing name(and I wasnt around in its70s incarnation wen it started) and AcidHouse was called that from the word go in 1988 but until 1989/90 when it started to be called rave. If any1s goin 2 know the answer 2 my question on northernsoul it should be some1 on here

  • I've got a question:Wot year was NorthernSoul 1st called Northern Soul?I kno that Dave Godin called the kind of records that football fans from the North of England bought in his shop (on their trips to awaymatches in London) Northern Soul from 1968 (when London itself was already getting into funky music or reggae) which I believe was also year when the TwistedWheel first played 100% of the Northern sound but wot year did people on the scene actually start callin it Northern Soul?

  • Kind of reminds me of shuffling. There's some similarities if you think of it.

  • thanks for the great comments, glad you're all liking the video and the memories it d bringing back

  • Northern Soul broke down race barriers....cool!!

  • Norwich soul girl saying thanks!

  • That'll be Soul Boy then...

  • top music makes a old man feel young again bring back the seventies please i only wish ?

  • 41 secs in the guy twists unbelievable think his name is whitey Rowland White great times. KTF

  • this brings back so many memories, use to travel from Kidderminster to Wigan Casino great times, anyone else from Kiddy I am talking the 70s

  • Came on here looking just in case, as I remember watching myself 'briefly' on TV when this was aired, but really didnt expect to see myself err wow 34 years later......on You tube Thanks so much for posting......JF

  • we were robbed, no hd quality memories for us :(

  • thanks

  • who is the singer ? last time I heard it was at the palais in nottingham ,late 70s

  • @4789walden Judy Street

  • The Missus can still do the spins & move to this.... Why cant music be this good anymore. This one is for my better half & her memories of Wigan Casino & All Nighters, etc, etc..... Brilliant

  • This brings back so many memories, thanks for sharing :)

  • my mums and dad have just come back from a long weekend soul do

  • Was only ten years old when this came out...obviously never went to casino, but older brothers did....filled our local school disco's every week with drops, kicks, spins n floor work lol...it got passed right through the family from top to bottom....even remember dad having a go in the living room lmfao...great times, brought us all together. Many thanks for posting, brought a massive smile to my face.

  • 10 people dont know WHAT they're on about!

  • Don't forget the rest of us 'not so good' dancers scattered in all the youth clubs across the country !

  • brilliant.

  • I love this song so much and have to say, the fella in the red vest pulls off an utterly daft move at just after a minute into the video. I always used to like the spinning of the guy in the blue jumper, but that drop the guy in the red vest pulled off to utter perfection is just incredible

  • i wish i was around back then, damn:(

  • Northern Soul, when speed was speed, haha

  • Oh joy....First at the pier and then the winter gardens Cleethorpes, this track brings back so many happy memories, 51 and still dancing all be it in the kitchen. KTF xx

  • Simply the best, I write on this wall every time I watch this track, I am now repeating myself (is that the sign of old age or what) but still a believer, I am 53 and believe it or not old friends from school still go to northern nights and one of my mate is the DJ (good on ya Eddie) keep up the good work BRILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No wonder we were the best football hooligans, Look how fit we were ! lol

  • @ThisAlbion = So true mate. A lot of Forest chaps including Paul Scarrot RIP were regulars at Wigan late 70's. Regards. PS. Every time I hear those chime bars.... :o)

  • footages above from what movie ?

  • If only today's enthusiasts dressed like these guys instead of trying to look like an extra from Quadrophenia. Vests are grossly under used nowadays.

  • Oh my god these people have skills. Its nothing compared like todays dance at the club, grinding.

  • I want to marry the girl @ 1.37and kick the bloke in the black vest in the bollocks @ 0.38.

  • And who said white men can't dance. KTF

  • what i really love about this clip, is the fact that some people are doing the most outrageous moves but the people right next to them are just doing their own thing. that's northern soul to me, fuck the rest just do your best!

  • hi, was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. ive been looking for a northern song now for a long time now but i cant rember who its by. some of the lyrics are

"you be alone in the night with your arms reaching out just to hold me tight

you be alone on your own..."

i think it it was a B side

    thanks x

  • I wish i knew how to northern soul,i REALLY BAD!

  • If you have never been there its so hard to explain just what a experience it was.....seeing these clips of Wigan again brings back the push to get in the doors....the heat, the smell of the crowd, but most of all the excitement, the pounding floor.....everyone lost in there own world of music and feeling. I was only about 17, but never will i forget and the northern soul music and the songs that still haunt me to this day.......still keepin the faith!!!! x

  • top dancin

  • gay boys

  • i'm not a yankee wanker you idiot.

  • Brilliant!! Happy memories of Wigan Casino, still do the Northern scene now and can still dance at 53

  • looks like a bunch of lame ass europeans dancing.

  • @MacLabFever

Dont know wot your talking about yankee wanker

  • 49 seconds dude..what the fuck was he on..lol

  • The lad at 1:00... 2 words: PEP Pills!

  • all of em chawin the jaws ofa themselfs haha

  • Remember running upto the local record shop to get a copy of this in 1978..think it had a bright yellow label if i remember rightly. Played it endlessly, what an introduction to Northern when you are 15! Still play it loudly in the car, fabulous.

  • Was there at the all nighters, then into Wigan swimming baths next morning with my addidas bag.....wish I could go back in time !

  • check that dude dancing at 49 secs,

  • AHH does not half bring back fantastic memorys something else!

  • my mum and dad still go to northern soul do's evan do there own 1 a month as my dads a DJ and has loads of records

  • I was born in the wrong decade! I wish I could have gone to places like this and enjoy yourself. These days you have to worry about having a glass shoved in your face.

  • BROS I WENT 2 A NORTERN SOUL NIGHT IT WAS FANTASTIC BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES BACK BROS KEEP THE FAITH

  • classic...keep the faith

  • Look at the spins and the athleticism required to dance like this. Good dancing.

  • Well, I'm fifty and I know I missed the best years, was catching up with my older peers, probably about three years older but that was a lot of difference then. I wasn't one of the fifty million who claim to have been at Wigan, I had friends who went. For me, like many it was Cecil Street, The labour club, The Liberal club, Miners welfare, anywhere that played 'Northern'. About ten, no probably more years ago I asked a DJ if he had any Northern, what did they sing? Was the reply........sigh

  • @maxnotts ERMM know what you mean lol! But I am 52 at least I got a few years there and any whers that was playing northern like you the places were Bury social club the Ritz in M/cr all dayers with sprung dance floor ahahar those were the days pure enjoyment just could not get enough of it the whole shabang and now the music still lives on!

    Nelis7777

  • @maxnotts I know what you mean about people who claimed to have gone to Wigan. I wont go on about my attendance at the Casino but there are a lot of myths about the club. Firstly, on the night the first documetary on the club was filmed people attended in droves who where never regulars. I decided not to attend that night as a sort of protest. Secondly, the dance clips that get shown again and again, perticulary on Youtube do not represent how we danced at the Casino.

  • @maxnotts Don't you worry, there's loads going on with well informed Soulies spinning the vinyl who just do it for the sake of it..and Notts has a vibrant soul scene..just fab. You get out there boy, if you dont, you wont live any longer, it'll just feel like it! KTF

  • @maxnotts...So glad I,m 55 & a Mancunian ;))

    Those were the days..

  • @maxnotts Like you (50 in May) I missed the casino by a couple of years. At my gigs in Mansfield, where I still play mainly Northern Soul and Motown, I've lost count of the people who claim to have been to Wigan. Also like you my Soul experience was limited to the local youth clubs and Miners Welfares.

I'm always surprised by how many young folk know these tracks, word for word and I have to say its nearly impossible to fight to soul music, unlike gangster Rap, so no trouble either at my gigs!

  • @maxnotts I hear ya Bro.....good times...nice people...

  • @maxnotts i am the same age as you and i went to the casino , not sure what your getting at ?

  • @maxnotts I hear ya Bro!

  • As a 44 year old this really takes me back to my youth club days. Wonder what all these amphetamine fuelled soulies are up to now??

  • @TheVillaguru on you tube - what a come down....

  • @TheVillaguru on the piss in brisbane aus these days still doing the nortern soul nites

  • Comment removed

THREE TRILLION POUNDS SPENT BAILING OUT THE CAPITALIST SYSTEM... YOUR MONEY!!! WORKERS UNITE!

  • @soulchosen

Found the album on amazon cheers

  • It is ironic that the phrase "Northern Soul" originates from "Soul City", which was a record shop in London!

  • @GrahamLondonUK

Talkin' about the great Dave Godin? Soul is soul is soul!!! Fuck northern, crossover, modern, neo, deep, etc... I have to defend 70's soul against Dundee & Falkirk so called elitists who only believe in 60's soul being true northern. Pure shit!!!

  • Fab so amazing, too this tune.

  • the dancing is so gay, but the music is pretty good

  • @TrojanSkinhead94 personally anyone who uses the expression that something or someone 'is so gay' is usually a bit of a ponce themselves. With a youtube name like you have surely you have seen footage of seventies skinheads in england wearing flowery shirts and sta-prest flares etc?, Trojan Skins isn't all about black bomber jackets and boots you know..... Suedeheads forever!!! Right-On!

  • @prunch72 i know, but i just dont dig the dancing, the music is good anyway.

  • is this kingshall stoke ]
