  • I have a feeling that he had just greased the sleeves on his bar, which is never a good idea. My gym did that once and even when the bar was slightly tilted to one side, the weights slide over like crazy.

  • This is why I only trust the texas power bar, I have trouble sliding the plates ONTO the bar. The ends have really nice biting power, and I never use clips for anything and I never have any problem.

    You got a point, but some guys purposely don't put clips on the bar, to do just what went wrong here: get rid of the weight. That's how I bench press without a spotter. Works fine for me.

    no you never put clips on an olympic bar unless you have a spotter with you. In case of an emerency, you need to tilt the bar and let the weights drop to the floor rather than rise serious injury

    2.) What the heck are straps going to do? You must mean collars.

    3.) You don't need a spotter when you're in a power rack; if you miss the lift, you just set the weight on the pins. That's the whole point of the apparatus: safe lifting without spotters.
