Beautiful voices for an equally beautiful hula. Maika'i kela! Aunty Olana and your ohana are truly talented and amazing.
@VeggieWahine: just an FYI, you do not put an okina between the two "i" in Hawaiian. Only in Hawai'i. Since you are a hula dancer, you would know this basic mana'o. Also, sweeping the flowers off of the stage at Merrie Monarch does not qualify you as being "in" the Merrie Monarch. Hawaiians say: "If you have nothing nice to say...then keep it to yourself".
This performance will forever be untouchable. Amazing job as always. <3 And the way you are acting is a reflection on your Kumu. I hope you know that, VeggieWahine. there is indeed no need for your childish, poor sportmanship opinions.
as for me i loved loved loved loved this dance and song.and i only say because ka wailele o nuuanu was my tutus favorite song and its like our family song.and e o mai is a beautiful song as well.but its true tho you shouldnt criticize.yeah some may take it personally but thats only because thats how they feel they should defend what they think is beautiful.as for me i cant say anything because i only danced hula for about 5 years then i stopped hoping to go bakk.and i can only criticize myself.
Wonderful job. I know these are not easy to do as it looks. So graceful and beautiful. And you make it look effortless. And of course, after all, you are on the Merrie Monarch Stage. And what a Big Deal that is. Mahalo for your performance.
Look at it this way, they are on the Merrie Monarch stage--you are not. If you cannot say something nice about videos, just do not post anything. Less hate can be spread. These Ladies are talented in what they do. Though it may not be to your taste, recognize their efforts and supherb ability to do this hula. How experienced are you in Hawai'ian mele and hula?
@march149 Chill out... no kidding I know this is Merrie Monarch. You think some average person is going to know what Merrie Monarch is and watch it? It's my opinion so I'm entitled to it just as you are entitled to criticizing my comments. I didn't even say their untalented but now I will say that whomever did the choreo is just like the singer: boring but dramatic. Don't even go there with what my experience is because I have competed in MM and been dancing for many years (and still do).
@VeggieWahine And I think that is great. What group were you with? And with that, I am sure you are probably more than good at it, too. But as on the professional level, I am surprised you are so quick to tear someone else down. That is not professional--more like poor sportsmanship. Yes, you are entitled to your opinions, of course, but you do not have to attack with such evil. In the end, it all comes back on you.
This is ataahua, it brings tears to the eyes absolutly beautiful, i cant stop watching it ! Nga mihi nui kia koutou and i look forward to seeing your halau at next years Merrie Monarch. I am coming to watch!
I have had this vid in my favourites for a while but nevercommented till now. You don't have to be hawaiian to understand this dance, As for most polynesian dance our hands and movements tell them story. I love the depiction of the sea, and the beautiful singing, I'm not hawaiian but I appreciate this auana. From beginning to end - so graceful. Love E O mai, it's a beautiful song and this version is beautiful. Thanks for posting this vid! mai ka'i!
With such grace and emotion.....Im surprised that you didnt place at all.....but I guess at the end of it all it doesnt take a prize to state that youre great but one can judge from the response of the people that watched.....Im a male and I was recommended to watch this and I fell in love with the ability of you girls to dance with such emotions.....congrats on such a wonderful job......you all rock
wow the halau got smaller... they were great though. very sharp and precise on their moves. my cousin used to dance for this group couple years ago before she moved to maui.
by any chance, do you know anyone who has their auana performance when they wore a white dress with the orange shoulder cape thing? i think it might've been around 2003...
i was there and actually competed that night, but i have to say that this performance is one of the only ones i remember other then ours. They were beautiflu. And i think that they should have placed
The auana is a contemporary dance created during the 20th century. It might not be 1970s traditional, but its exactly what the auana stands for. Its modern style of dancing makes it beautiful!
Just amazing...the voices sang a song of worship and the Hand of God was seen in the women who shared thier passion of dance...They display the Lord's love like a endless steam of water that dances for ever...Blessing
This was one of my top performances of that night. I was in complete shock they didn't place. Yes, the beginning of their performance might have taken them a while to get into formation but I believe that the main reason they didn't place was because they were modern. There costumes were very different and their dance moves were different. Although this is Auana, there was a complete set of new judges who might not like change. They like to stay to the older days of auana style of dance.
@rchs4me it should say at the beginning while the halau is being introduced but they first dance: Ka Wailele 'O Nu'uanu & then to E O Mai by Keali'i Reichel [:
@rchs4me , it is a medley of Ka Wailele O Nuuanu and E O Mai =] i love this number and this rendition of both songs! I wish I could have joined this halau while I was living on island=1 but hey I havent stopped breathing yet!;] glad u enjoyed this as much as I did! =]
wow.. that was amazing. i was looking out for the ending as islandurban said and I was truly blown away. I am not a hawaiian but a samoan, and do not know the first thing about hula. I look forward every year to view this comp as we cannot get it out here in Melbourne Australia.
I agree with you as I live in Brisbane. As a point of interest, either the ABC or SBS had a documentary screened week-end just gone, Sunday actually, and it was about this competition. I'm glad the video's are posted on YouTube.
I can't remember what I was looking for last winter when I came upon my first MM video. But I was hooked. I live in SW LA and don't know the first thing about hula. I have waited to see this years comp along time. This took my breath away. This Cajun does not understand one word of this mele but it is communicated so well through thier movement, faces, costumes and singing I feel like I do. It's a shame that they did not get any recognition at all for this preformance. It is my fav
can some tell me what place these gurls come.....I hope they were n01 theyre soOoOo goRjuss!!! and I really Love the song and the siNger.....gOrjuss voice:):)
Halau Hula Olana is very good in Auana, when I used to dance for Mrs. Ai, they always stressed practicing our graceful hand gestures & it shows in this performance. I remember seeing these girls in Keiki Hula, they're soo beautiful ! In my opinion they did not place because although their dance is beautiful, their line formations get sloppy from their foot movements, Its okay, it is very hard to transition into different formations !!!
to say that their messy line formations were the cause of their loss is kinda funny....check out the judges at the end of the performance who weren't even looking at them.
Halau Hula Olana is one of the most graceful halaus ever, when I used to dance for them, Aunty Nat would always tell us to practice having graceful hand gestures & it shows in this performance !
Makes me wanna sit & swim into a lovely nu'uanu waterfall.... :) I loved there performance. It was frickin Awesome! Judges need to be changed. :) I love it....
I was limited to the amount of characters....to me as a spectator, I can't speak on behalf of the dancer, but I would rather have people talking about my performances over and over. When you go to a friend's house to watch Merrie Monarch, it's the one that everyone wants to watch.....not caring too much about watching the winner unless of course the winners were awesome.
OMG...If you didn't watch this there, gosh this video is great but doesn't do it justice. However, this halau to me gives memorable performances, all the time!!! They may not place (due to whatever it may be), but these are performances you'll remember forever and ever, to me that's better than placing. I have seen winners place and thinking to myself during the awards ceremony, "Wait...What did they dance again?" On the other hand, this halau's performances I always remember...Very classy!!
These girls & costumes are absolutely breathtaking! Natalie's amazing voice contributed to the girls' obvious love of hula. Flawless! You were beautiful Malia!
