well there is a TSB(technical service bullitin) about this engine having this knock at lower idle and is present when cold and may also be present when its at op. temp. what the tsb say the problem is that the pistions get too much clearence over use and time and the pistons start to rock back and forth in the bore of the cylinder creating this knock you hear. and the way that it says to fix it is replacment of all pistions, but you would also have to bore the engine to remove any imperfections
When cleaning the headgasket surface,do not use the scotchbrite pads used on a die grinder.GM and Jasper say not to do this. The scotchbrite fragments can get in the oil and do engine damage mainly to the bearings. The oil filter can't trap these little fragments. The scotchbrite pads are made out of a powdery material
just leave it i have the same car its got the same knocking sound its just a lifter its very common with these motors it won't hurt anything unless the lifter is really fucked up
@dumdumpoper a new head gasket is easy to do yourself, easyier than lifters all you need is the $20 head gasket. so all totaled after the lifters and gasket you will be looking at $180 maybe less im not sure the prices are this high for your car. GOODLUCK
@dumdumpoper you should be able to fix it yourself, just get some tools and get the need parts. its pretty straight forward a new head wouldnt fix it and is unnessery the lifter is under the intake manifold and head. your engine has pushrods because the cam is in the block, once the heads off you should be able to see the pushrods then the lifter will be seated on that.they cost about 20 bucks a pop for good ones this would be a good time to replace them all. there will be 8 total so $160
@JeepCherokeeKid also check out the push rods put them on a flat surface and make sure they roll around flat. make sure your rocker arms are tightened to spec and youll be ready to roll. make sure you drain the oil before you start then put new oil in once you are done.
@JeepCherokeeKid the pushrods on cavaliers are thicker than the ones on my stock 73 454. my dad has a 97 cav 2.2L 5spd and it has 260,000 on it. same motor as my 94 cav. try some lucas oil stabilizer
@dumdumpoper for the lifter no u need to pull the head to gain access to the lifters but no head work required. also be careful due to the fact u dont know which lifter it is and u could replace the wrong one by mistake always remember sound travels in the engine so just b sure b4 u replace one thats all im sayin
@dumdumpoper lifters aren't in the head. they are seperate. and its hard to tell from here but it sounds like a deeper noise than a lifter, but lifter is very common for these engines. also if its never been done, think about the timing chain.
@dumdumpoper a new head would definitely fix it since it is a lifter, but you don't need to go to that extreme, just replace the lifters and be sure to lubricate them good when you replace them

It could be a lifter however at about 150k+ miles they usually need a valve adjustment
