This rendition by Reinald Werrenrath is very good, but I was brought up on the John Charles Thomas recording and am somewhat partial toward it. However, I enjoyed Werrenrath's singing and thank you for posting this.
(1) The "young recruits" who were "shaking" from being turned out to see this awful spectacle, were not being punished for anything. It was to harden them to the sight of death so they'd be better soldiers.
(2) This was played on an old phonograph. I wonder if a modern stereo would have made a better sound.
