hahahaha omg i expected this to be like a masterpiece theater costume drama (not that i have anything against those) and then this really intense music started
UGHH! I hate this movie so much. The only reason I watched it was for Hayley Atwell in which she was the only good thing about this movie. Honestly she is more beautiful here than in Captain America, but barely because she is a goddess in Captain. Her haircut in BH rivals Cate Blanchett's in Indiana Jones 4, shoot Hayley should've been Irina Spalko in Indy 4!!
@Hyman74Roth well if you were only watching it for a perv, then I'm hardly surprised you were dissapointed! I don't think Waugh had it in mind to make Brideshead an erotic novel.
@stashcode NO! No, no, she is beautiful yes, but I like her acting, that was the other reason I watched this. Didn't cross my mind once that she was going to get naked. No I hate this movie for different reasons, I didn't like Charles (he makes Bill the Butcher is honorable than this guy), Sebastian was an unsympathetic wimp ( I wanted to smack him), and Lady Marchmain was a cartoon character that I kept laughing at because her dialogue was just so unbelievable. I had not read the book either.
@Hyman74Roth ahh - I apologise! Yes, she is a great actress. Interesting comments on the other characters. You'd love the book - give it a shot if you get the time.
@stashcode And the thing I eat up period films, I LOVE the Age of Innocence and I really dug Godsford Park it was just with this one I felt like the director did all the things that you are not suppose to do in a period movie and just like Chicken Little I almost lost faith in the genre after watching this...untill I saw the 2011 version of Jane Eyre, renewed my faith entirely:)
I just finished watching this movie and it was beautiful. I just found it is based on a book.
I've always thought that you must read the book first, before watching a movie based on it because if you don't, you don't enjoy it as much... but I'm kinda changing my mind now.
If you watch a movie based on a good book without knowing it you actually ENJOY it. But if the book is actually better than the movie (which I bet it is) you hate the fact that it isn't exactly like the book you loved.
I'm sorry, did I miss something? Did I fucking search for "Sensational heterosexual glamourous intrigue" by accident? What the flying fuck is this movie and why is it permitted to name itself after a perfectly lovely book?
This movie is really good if you just stop comparing it to the book and the series all the time. The soundtrack is brilliant, the acting great and the visuality is just gorgeous. Just try to enjoy that and you'll see its actually a fantastic movie.
@kindrickm - No, but if one is going to depart so completely from the plot and above all from the spirit of the book, why name the movie after it? Why not just give the characters and the film their own names? They are merely capitalizing on the fame of Waugh's novel without being faithful to his work or his intent.
@llamala2010 - Simple; it would be plagiarism not to give Waugh credit. As an artist myself, I think it's safe to say that the people who took the tremendous amount of time and effort to create this film probably did not dedicate so many hours to "capitalize". (Particularly considering this was absolutely not a big box office money maker.) You don't have to act like a snob just to seem intelligent, you know. Sometimes people just like to watch a fucking movie.
I know that the movie is slightly different from the book , but I like the movie better !
The book is terribly boring where certain things are being implied only. The writer does not want to explain certain things directly which makes it an incomplete novel. The movie seems to be direct !
So I choose the movie over the television series and also the book !
Well, Charles Ryder is at fault for falling into temptation. And although he plays the victim, he did choose Julia mainly for the mansion. It is idealistic to think he wanted to be with her because he loved her. (Although I myself like to believe he truly loved her and Sebastian.)
@KameraBoy09 good lord i don't even remember making that comment before....i was so vulgar and harsh ahah im sorry i mustve been in a crazy hormonal-girl-mood-swing at the time. And you know when I watched this when it first came out...well I only watched it once, and didn't even really think of him loving her mostly for the mansion. but now that youve mentioned it, i definitely think youre right. :)
I am not bashing anyone's beliefs but i am just saying that even in the trailer, it says BASED on the novel. The definition of based is a starting point or point of departure. The movie version is based on the novel but doesnt necessarily have to be exact.
If you view it with a blank slate, you can see that the images and acting are quite remarkable. The scenes, the color, everything is beautiful. you just need to watch it without the book in mind. Give that a try
i like it, yes of course, the book ant the movie are like to different stories, but any way i like it, there's beautiful music in the film too, composed by Adrian Johnston
This version is pure garbage! It has been TOTALLY rewritten and distorted so that is NOTHING like the novel. It has completely eradicated Waugh´s message. It is, in fact, an outrage! The people are unattractive and dreary and the accents are quite hideous! Upper class people did not speak with flat estuary accents in the 1920s! The TV version was by far the best!
@paintedsilverwing for me too, and did too, absolutely :( ! just seen the film (haven't read the book) and I just say it's great.. and moving, but it was kinda impossible for me to watch it properly after the ball scene..
I think Ben Whishaw is amazing in the role of Sebastian (he doesn't just play Sebastian, he IS Sebastian), but the rest of the movie ... if you haven't read the book you can enjoy it, but if you have, then you miss it.
well i guess we all are dissapointed if the actors don`t look like we had imagined. and if the scenes we love are shortend. books are giving us more room for imagination.
Well the movie just changed so much. when I was watching the movie because I read the book a long time ago so I didn't realy remember much of it. I had to go back and reread it. It's so different. Like the love between Julis and Charles that doen't come to show until much later in the book.
it's really a bad copy of the only and original one with jeremy irons. i never thought that even they supposed to make something different and better.
They really dumbed this down and wrecked the beautiful language of Evelyn Waugh. Do yourself a favor--skip the movie and watch the BBC series or better yet, read the book with is awesome.
This movie is sooo empty and boring... One of the worst movie I have ever seen, totally disappointed after the trailer... Really like the age and the clothes, but no thanks... 2/10
Oh that guy plays 'Hec' in 'Imagine me and you' he seems awesome :) Its like usually when the character you're supposed to like in a film has an affair they make their other half unlikable so you're okay with it, but every character in that movie (IYAM) was so likable.
I like Emma Thompson too and this film seems interesting :)
Hey, I was thinking the same thing about Imagine Me and You (love that movie)! So, glad it had a happy ending for all the characters, b/c I liked them all as well.
i hope the music for the whole film isent like this, it dosent suit the story at all!!!!! it maybe suits some high adrenalin action film with vin diesel but not a 1920s era film about the British upper classes.
But the production, settings & the acting look good.
Also it will be interesting how they managed to condense the story into a 2 hour film when the TV series was almost 12 hours long.
Yeah this trailer really doesn't do the movie justice in terms of the overall feeling. The movie was very good but it was the music that really blew me away. If you haven't heard the soundtrack, you're missing out!
this is nothing like the book. It doesn't compare. The old series was much better- every single tiny detail was in there. This film doesn't even have the real plot! But whishaw is good, that I must admit.

this movie is ok. Personally I wish they had made it much much longer, as the book, and the 1980s film series, are outstanding.
What you have here it half the tale without the depth and context (and therefore impact) of the book/1980s effort.
