Basically, think of the history of combat robotics as a bit like the history of life. Robot Wars and Battlebots were like the Cambrian Explosion. There were a whole bunch of different body plans (weapons / drivetrains) because nobody quite knew what worked. Today is more like modern times; there are fewer types of weapon (spinners and wedges in the US, flippers and hammers in the UK), but these have been refined, and work much better than older designs...
...for example, when BioHazard fought Megabyte in 2005, the older lifter didn't stand a chance, just the same as an Anomalocaris wouldn't stand a chance against a tuna.
There are also new variations of the old robots being developed, such as the terrifying new "melty" robots, which are a more powerful version of the old thwackbot design.
