  • no guys, jumping forward in the field of medicine substantially is no where near importing as keeping the %#@$ pro-lifers quiet for a few minutes.

  • 400,000 embryos frozen across the US are not being thown out every year. There are that many frozen in total, yes, but they are being stored and almost 90% of them are being saved for future family building attempts by those who created them. I agree that those families who decide they are not going to use them for their own family should be able to decide if they wish to donate them for sem cell research, and that should be allowed (or to donate to another family, or to discard if they wish).

  • vernacular "Embryonic Destruction Stem Cell Research" frames the issue clearly on the destruction of embryos as "lethal". No scientist known to Embryonic Stem Cell Research denies that embryos are destroyed in the process

  • Thing is most (over 80%) of those "350,000" embryos 'waiting to be used' in fertility clinics are being saved for future family building by those whose embryos they are.

  • Sorry, but you've got your numbers confused. Of the famous "400,000" in storage that politicians bandy about, about 50,000 of them die per year, as the viability of a frozen embryo is 8 years. You can add those to the additional 400,000 thrown in the garbage in IVF clinics each year, and you get about 1,200 embryos being thrown into the garbage each year. Your only way out of that dilemma is to make IVF illegal.

  • FYI, the viablity of the frozen embryo is NOT limited to eight years. Embryo freezing has also improved in technique over the years as well so the suspected viablity is ever changing leaving an unknown...if I recall, there was a 13 or 15 year old embyro used recently that produced a live birth. But most people will use their remaining embryos if they are going to long before that. ;-)

  • Thanks for the comment L5. I got my number from 3 independent sources - 2 IVF clinic owners and 1 professor in microbiology. I have no intention of being rude, but may I ask from where you get your information? BTW, I erred in my last post, by saying that 1,200 embryos are trashed every year. The correct figure is 1,200 embryos are thrown into the trash in this country every DAY.

  • MKACE, I got some of my information from an embryologist directly ;-) And from my 10 years involved in this field.

Not intending to be rude either, but again, no the viablity of frozen embryos is NOT limited to 8 years. And no, 50,000 embryos a year are not "dying" whilst frozen because they reach that mark. And yes, I am 100% sure.

  • I think that if a baby dies then you could use the embreo but, if its healthy and the mother just doesnt want to face consoquinces then that is murder! do these people realize that at a few weeks it has a heart beat and feels how is that not human? it has fingers and toes and opens its mouth and feels. i have seen some of the other forms of abortion and it makes me sick so many parents want to adopt why kill an infant bc of their mistakes it was not the baby who made it

  • Uhhhmmm yeah...an embryo needs to actually thrive, survive and implant into the uterine lining of a woman after being transfered back there before it will ever have a heartbeat, and even then the odds are against ALL embryos ("natural" or ivf ones). MOST conceived embryos "naturally" fail to survive past the very earliest of stages (50-75% or more don't survive). So, anytime anyone tries to get pregnant it is common for embryos to die. IVF is no different.

  • It's not really "back there," since no IVF embryo has ever been in the uterus in teh first place. The eggs are scraped directly from the ovaries and fertilized in a Petri dish. Since this is invasive surgery and a costly procedure, multiple eggs are harvested and fertilized simultaneously, resulting in significant overstock, the significant majority of which goes to waste.

  • Thanks. I understand the process perfectly. I simply used inexact wording. Most medical procedures are "invasive and costly" by the way. Embryos are not "overstock". They are frozen for future chances at a viable pregnancy. Since the human reproductive system "naturally" weeds out MOST embryos as non-viable, it makes sense that the a similar process is needed with IVF to produce a viable pregnancy. What usually goes to "waste" are NON VIABLE embryos. They are not CAPEABLE of surviving.

  • You are a true hero! Keep up the good work and thank you!

  • I'm glad to have met a fellow activist. I will be participating in a nationwide rally on Oct. 5 to demand George Bush Step Down! They bomb the hell out of poor people and give them Sept. 11 every five seconds, but that's not murder. Then they blog that they've got goose bumps, because Armageddon is here. George Bush knows what's going on, because he's allowing these big Drug companies to strike it rich when they help people like you and my mom. We need to get pissed off and nasty NOW!

  • I usually don't give rejects the time of day. However, I'v been taking care of my elderly mother for almost four years, now. She's in the moderate stages of Alzheimer's AND a Diabetic. She lives with me and my "liberal" husband. I've yet to see my neocon, ugly, old sister wash my mother up, even once. My "liberal" husband has helped me do so. I know these right-wing, misogynistic freaks and losers only do it to piss us off. Let them say it to me in person, and believe me, I won't talk!

  • I really feel for your situation. I've lived in a wheelchair for the past 6 years and it hurts me more to see my family's pain than to experience my own.

I'm doing everything in my power to make trashing embryos instead of using them for cures an issue in November. I have to say that I don't believe the president is even aware of this. People have just got to understand the hyposcrisy of saying that you won't destroy life, when 1,000 lives of that description are destroyed every day.

  • Here's another underlying message: Georgey didn't paw @ a single black baby. Does that mean he's practicing eugenics, like Hitler did? Let's see. they both heard their mommas' voices in their heads, too. I bet you're not even 20 and never been with a REAL WOMAN; unless you're a lesbian, then I apologize profusely.Look up Liberalism in the Dictionary and while you're @ it, it's spelled JACKAL. Hold it! I think I hear your JACKAL momma calling -- Yup, she wants you back @ her teat!

  • There's not much reason to give people like the orthographically challenged podjackel the time of day. The only thing to keep in mind is that a minimum of 1,000 embryos are thrown in the garbage every single day in this country. Those who oppose the research are simply closing their ears - 1,000 embryos a day. Trashed. Incinerated. With the rest of the refuse from IVF clinics. Don't forget that. Ever.

  • Any one else catch the lie at the end?

Embionic stem cell research has shawn ZERO benefit in the treatment of disease and illness. However, adult stem cell research has be shown to beneficial. So what is the underlying message here? Liberals will kill to help themselves.

    LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER!

  • Just a quick heads up on this: Stem cell surgery has been going on in China for the past 3 years, with very good results. You may want to check it out at www.stemcellschina.com. A number of Americans have had the treatment already.

  • Actually it's embrionic not embionic. neocons are the anti christ.

  • Again false propaganda you have bought into without carefully analyzing the information. Embryonic stem cells have been used to allow PARALYZED rats to walk again. This is PROOF of PRINCIPLE, the principle being that embryonic stem cells could be used to "fix" some damage to the body.

Please remember, the most respected scientists in the stem cell community believe that both embryonic and adult stem cell research should go forward.

  • Very good video.

  • Well, there's been about 100 years of cancer research... no cure yet, let's give up there for one... 20+ in AIDS research? pfffft, waste of time and money. Let's better use it to teach Jesus and junk.

  • Umm, what's the point? What else are you supposed to do with medical waist? Maybe Focus on the Family should use their millions to buy up all these expired cells and pay for christian funerals for all of them. Wouldn't that be the rigth thing to do?

  • Nobody in the national debate referred to them as "medical waste". As a matter of fact, nobody referred to trashed embryos at all. All you heard about was some drivel about 400,000 "currently in frozen storage that would otherwise be discarded". Well, aside from them, here are another 350,000 embryos being trashed every day - 1,000 embryos every day into the biohazard waste bin.

So that's the point. Get itf?

  • I agree, there was a big, big lie perpetuated by the opponents that these embryos were just waiting to be adopted, or worse yet, that they were fetuses of a few months in age being discarded, not just a few cells.

  • It is time to take hold of this topic with speed and intelligence. The benefits are clear. That the resource has been blocked is not based on science or common sense.

    It is time for action.

  • In my view, the ailing, disabled and dying are cannon fodder in the abortion war. From my perspective in my wheelchair, that is no way to live. If you're serious about taking action, my group has some plans. Please contact me if you're serious.

    Martin

  • Martin is serious -- there's some great stuff underway, and anyone interested in really taking serious action should keep an eye out.

Also, if you want to take another action right now, support pro-stem-cell candidates.

We've raised nearly $14,000 in the first few weeks -- help us take this to $100,000

  • Here's the link (annoyingly, YouTube seems to require it be broken up to post):

    www Stem Cell Candidates org

  • JMcH, nice one. I love when people throw the "if embryonic stem cell research is so great, why hasn't it produced any cures?" argument into the mix.

Of course the answer is because, while some universities and foundations have done limited research, the large scale work capable of providing treatment and cures HAS NOT been able to move forward, thanks mostly to the religious right, our absurd President, and unfortunately misled citizens like yourself.

  • Word. I can't stand it when religion gets in the way of science. I really shouldn't say this... but science has proven itself over and over... can't say the same for religion :s

I mean if these are getting thrown out anyways, wtf not put them to some use.

  • I agree!

  • with ZeClassique, that is.

  • Thats funny pinter12 because many states have approved state funding for embryonic stem cell research! it is our of federal hands idiot! its called states rights...just as even though Bush is against abortion he cannot cause CAlifornia or any other state to discontinue them UNLESS the majority of america votes for its ban.<br>

  • corriespejo: Wrong again. It requires 2/3 congress (house and senate) or 2/3 states to introduce it, and 3/4 states or 3/4 state special committees to approve of it. That means that it pretty much will never happen.

  • Too bad embryonic stem cells have not produced one single treatement or cure in all the years the research has been going on. Otherwise, you'd almost have a valid point with this video. (Oh, let me guess. "We just need more embryos! We just need fresh embryos!")

  • If reasearch were fully funded we may have treatments developed here. Thanks to the ignorant but well organized NeoCons the U.S. public and economy are being deprived of what may eventually prove to be an excellent treament for many diseases. Other countries aren't sitting on their hands. When these treatments become available in places like China you can bet the rich politicians and their families that oppose this research will be heading there for their treatments while the poor suffer.

  • acctually it has in clinical trials so shut the fuck up about things you dont know.

  • And how many years is that? Human embryonic stem cell research has ONLY been conducted for 8 years. Adult stem cell research has been conducted for over 50 years!

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see which one would be ahead in going from basic science research to clinical treatment which takes a long time.

  • what we DO need is less stupid-christpunching-sheep like you in this world. you are NOT "Pro-Life", you are PRO-DEATH by laughing and being happy that you are "going to heaven" as sick children die! You are the result of de-evolution!

  • Well put, good on you. These pathetic pro-lifers quite obviously do not know anyone who is very very sick. How can someone stand in the way of helping others?

  • I know how hard it is to watch someone who is terminally ill and desperately want to find a cure for them. My husband has cystic fibrosis. According to doctors he doesn't have a long life ahead of him. However, we know that God can work miracles in our lives!! That being said, however, my husband and I would NEVER want to destroy the precious life of a little baby in an attempt to find a cure. A baby is a baby no matter how small. Ever seen Horton Hears a Who? :)

  • I wanted to add one more thing. Embryos can also be adopted (instead of being destroyed) by other infertile couples and given a chance at life. In fact, my husband and I are in the process of adopting 5 embryos right now. These little ones deserve a right to live... we are so excited to give them a warm womb to grow in and a home in which to love them!

  • An embryo is not a baby. A baby is a postnatal stage of human development. An embryo at this stage has none of the vital systems necessary for determining human life on any clinical level. Anyone with the vitals of an ex-utero embryo is clinically dead. Any parent of a dead child may donate their progeny to medical science, including, thankfully, IVF ova donors.

Of the hundreds of thousands of discarded waste embryos annually, only 100 or so have ever been adopted. What a waste of potential.

  • Even though I was an embryo conceived inside of my mother's womb instead of a petri dish, my life.... yes LIFE..... was precious to my mother. She fought to keep me safe andd healthy both prenatal and postnatal -to me, there is no difference. It's tragic to me that there aren't more people fighting for the rights of these little ones who cannot fight for themselves. They are life at it's earliest stage.

  • Thankyou, McCanneFAM. You make a good point.

  • @McCanneFAM

There is a HUGE difference between an established pregnancy that your mother had (you), and an EMBRYO that has not implanted in a womb. Your mother likely lost at least a couple "embryos" whilst trying to get pregnant (statistically anyway) because the vast majority of all human conceived embryos are simply not viable no matter how they are created or nurtured. Yes, embryos are "life", but they are not babies, but rather embryos that are potential babies.

  • An embryo is not a baby? Ohh really, sherlock!

An embryo is a human life. It is living. It's a LIVE cell.

Stopping something from living is the SAME as killing.

    Think about it.

  • @AFactADay

Being a "living cell" doesn't make an embryo a "baby". Yes, live cells, are "alive". Sperm cells are "alive" too...but they are not babies either. The miraculous combination of living sperm cells and living egg cells become living embryos...but they are still, not a "baby" yet...not until they impant into a womb, continue to thrive. Think about it.

  • No, sadly, an embryo is NOT a "little baby", if they were all those infertile couples using IVF would be dancing with joy since they would have "babies" then if they had any embryos.

  • @McCanneFAM

Embryos are not babies, they have the amazing potential of living human cells to become babies if everything goes right. But embryos are not just "small babies", they are embryos with the potential to grow into a baby.

  • Here's something I didn't know. I thought all those embryos were in some big freezing vault in Utah or somewhere. It would be interesting to dump all these trashed embryos on the White House Lawn - great fertilizer, Mr. President!

  • Maybe instead of fertilizer, you can continue to use them for beauty treatments. Yep, just smear a few embryos around on a woman's face and presto! 10 years younger! Move over, Oil of Olay!
