I love all of you unemployed mouth breathers, smoking cigarettes, eating Funyuns and watching YouTube all day commenting on how this Captain doesn't know what he's doing on the water, in his ship. Maybe you should go and heckle a surgeon as he's doing a bowel resection next. Fucking morons. Put the snack cakes down, move out of your parent's basement and have the gonads to JOIN the USCG or Navy, then maybe you can tell this Skipper he's an "idiot" to his face....tell us all how that works out.
@BradDayToYou I agree with you totally....Coast Guard risk their life everyday to save stranded people....You really need to know what you are doing to skipper a vessel like this...
Been in that sitruations many times. Captain/crew demonstrate excellent skills at the helm and throttles. Looks like he had to run out a bit (into deeper water?) before making the turn to starboard, if not I'm sure he would have brought the bow into the seas sooner and avoid that hit on his beam. The seas lay down some more once out in deep water so it's not all as bad as it looks on the video.
I'm not sure if that captain knew what he was doing? It seemed like it wasn't until a big wave hit the ship "beam on" that he realised he needed to turn the bow into the waves.
That is the Coast Guard, they would go out in weather 10 times as bad as in this video to rescue sailors in distress. It is not stupid or crazy, this skipper knows his ship & its limits. Notice how the ships skipper waits for the right time to turn, he has to time it for wen the gap between the big waves is farther apart then pull hard to port at full throttle to avoid capsizing the ship.
Impressionante. A manobra de saida éq ue foi dificil, atendendo à pouca profundidade da zona da barra e junto aos molhes. Depois de sair ... até parece fácil.
Regardless of the mission, training or otherwise, this video has become my all time favorite. I have seen probably almost every ship vs storm video not to mention being in a few myself. Thanks for posting it.
For them to leave port under these conditions, risking ship and crew, it has to be a rescue mission. And it´s a pretty impressive display of seamanship, sturdy vessel, and a good deal of luck. Thumbs up.
Yeah, that ship had some serious HP...You can tell when he gunned it to get up and over. nice job.

I was on this ship and the reason we left port was to get a cup of coffee at the next port up the coast.

That was ace. if the captain of that ship had a choice then he trusted that it would be a good one. Amazing.

Don't forget that no matter how bad the weather is, in the North Sea there will always be an ERRV bouncing around somewhere close by.

This is Japan? Amazing sailors the japanese and thats a very seaworthy little ship that way it recovered from that roll.
I hope they weren't serving Sushi for lunch in that weather.

Don't know why he was going out in those conditions as it was a massive risk of being swept on to the breakwall.

@nakazatoGTR Yes i thought the same. This could not be a routine patrol because no reason to risk the crew and ship. Pretty exciting...

@Sirbadone uh-huh... there's not much harm in sailing a vessel in such sea states in open water, but starting out from port? thats a top-gun class
