Just bought one yesterday. Can't wait to carry this at college (I'm famous for it). Already have a GE 3-6035A and I'm going for a more ghettoblaster look with this one.
Sounds great, have fun, people just don't carry them around anymore like they did when I was young, but then again, it was a different time, back then it seemed everyone had them and it was almost a competition to see who could get the biggest badest one, in fact where I live they will ticket you for having your music to loud now days, I really miss those times, but alas things change. again have fun!!!
Ya, that's the way it is at Penn State. I walk around with random people all night till about 2:30 AM and some people call pissed off. Although, I don't get it because it's nothing but college kids downtown and nothing but parties. I start 100 person dance parties outside the bars, the cops get pissed but can't do anything. The next time they get a complaint, they said they could fine me $300. I'll have people offering to help pay it, that I know hahaha
@babyty84 It's jammed, you probably need to take it apart and find out, the lighter plastic plate in the upper part of the cassette player slides down with the play button, check to see if that's not stuck on something, I would imagine the tape deck is preventing the radio from playing, as you have to have the cassette player on to use the line in jack, which is a pain!!
That thing rocks! They don't make boomboxes like they used to. I have a early "Decline era" Toshiba with 4 inchers and even it sounds better than whats put out now. I use a FM Transmitter for my PSP and play my MP3s through it. Great sounding unit, though I'm sure one of the Golden Era 'Blasters would put it to shame. Funny thing is the Antenna is gone, yet it still picks up most radio stations pretty clear, and I'm out in the boonies in Georgia.
@Scioneer I have a few Toshibas myself, not bad at all really, and your right they will make newer ones sound like crap, funny how things keep getting smaller but sound worse, supposedly all in the name of progress, and yet people are accepting the bad sound, not to mention all the compressed music out now, way back when everyone wanted the purest best sound possible, hope things change soon.
I have this exact model which I purchased in the early 80's. A great machine!
I attached a simple CD player to the side RCA inputs and this thing is king. It also has stereo spatial control and separate bass and treble controls which you don't find on modern junk.
I will never part with this Magnavox!
As a guitarist, I use this boom box outside to play back tracks. Right next to it is a VOX DA20 battery powered guitar amp.
I would not recommend a Strat patched to your Magna. Look into the portable guitar amps such as VOX DA10, or Roland Micro Cube. Both are excellent buys and are AC or battery powered.
Both amps come with effects and Aux in for iPod or CD players.
I still have my D8443 that I bought in July of 1984 - still pumping hard of all of these 25 years. I use it now as an external amplifier to connect up to my game systems that I also take with me to friends and family's homes .. to really fill up the room with great sound. Trick is, to open up the cassette door and hold down the record tab then push the PAUSE then the RECORD button - is how to activate it as an external amplifier.
i just won one like this on ebay . for $145.00 in mint condition . it has been taken care of 20 years thats how long the sellers frend had it in the gradge his parents gave it to him and the seller bought it from him for more. the seller had a hidden price . i won it its nice and loud ...
In my video of this - section - ( More info ) I have pictures of the inside of this Magnavox D8443 Boombox, and I showed how to use the line in function
the line on for the ipod didnt sound good? damn. i just found our old one today and i was thinking about taking it on a camping trip and i saw that line in thing and was thinking about it. i guess thats a not but i read somewehre else that the tape deck thing worked pretty good. even if the sools dont spin the tape it still wokrs cuz the tape is toughing the little reader thing.
sorry to comment again but the way this thing is right now, is exactly how i got it the only thing i changed was i redid how the power cord was fitted to the transformer it was just soldered and elec. taped on but i replaced that with 2 wire nuts and elect tape.
it once belonged to my uncle and this was in my family for a long time and he gave it to me b/c he knows i like electronics and this type of stuff
yeah mine needs help bigtime i think i need to replace a cap or something b/c when you turn it up with the bass on full it dims the stereo light like the amp isnt getting enough juice
i have that EXACT same unit ill have to get it on here, the cassette deck on mine doesnt work the only thing that works is the radio and that barely works i think thats due to the power supply transformer may need replacing and this is how i got it its beat up bad but it plays, my uncle gave it to me b/che knows i like this stuff
That's too bad on the radio, the cassette issue is hard to get a fix, someone needs to replicate the gears in metal or something, otherwise they do look and sound good!
yeah id like to restore mine but im not that worried about the tape deck as i listen to mp3s and the radio and alot of the music heard on the radio i can get in mp3s, maybe ill mod mine into an ipod dock a ghetto blaster ipod dock and have the batteries charge my ipod or something
That's an idea, some have done this to the old boomboxes, they don't make them as big these days, those days are gone, thus I now collect them! The Magnavoxes can be found on e-bay from time to time along with many others.
well I got a negative comment for my modding comment but i dont care lol, actually i just heard that this radio can be an amp for a cd player so instead of modding it into an ipod dock ill restore my unit and make an ipod dock or buy one and just plug into the line ins, also the power supply needs fixin there is this voltage change switch and im hoping that thats like the default voltage for it 110VAC i might remove the voltage selector if it is
I've already done that. If you buy a tape deck car kit (the little casette with the headphone cord) and you saw a little niche in the door, you can have yourself a retro iHome
@stewart8980 the tape deck on mine doesnt work I'll need to fix that and I will be restoring the AUX inputs so I can hook my ipod to the line ins and not have to go thru the preamp in the tape deck. I dunno How I would tap power for the iPod I need 5VDC and under 1A. I dont know where on the boombox I could find that and if it would be clean enough to charge the ipod safely.
I have two..one that's minty, and one that has no battery door, and the radio play's lower than the cassette. I restore them, but can't figure out the radio issue. i cleaned the contacts on both, and cleaned them both out inside and out..they look new. The one that is all workin is nicer (switched the cases around) than the other one, but I'm sellin the good one for 150. and the radio issue one for 1/2 that...75.00..can ship too..it's on e-bay right now. user name wildbillo68 these boxs rule!
Neato, I have one of these. Had to repair the volume knobs because they were internally broken, but now it sounds great! These boomboxes really do sound nice.
Yeah, I own two, one has a cassestte deck that don't work, the other works fine, I guess this is a issue with these from age, the gears chew up, so i don't use the one taht works too often, otherwise great sounding!
I had one of these in the awesome 80's!

I know, i took mine apart and gave them a light clear coat of paint, which seemed to harden them, otherwise they are soft from age.

ur lucky the tape player still works that is a big problem with these

Hello, they are exactly the same, except the name plate, Philips and Magnavox are basically the same company, philips owns Magnavox.
